The Proper Services for Teachers in Remote Areas

In this globalization era, Indonesia still faces educational problems, especially the ones related to teachers in remote areas. We cant deny that the government has not taken care of them yet. Eventhough, the government has given the 20% State Budget for educational developments, it does not work well. As a matter of fact, the education in remote areas is still up in the air, and it can influence the teachers roles there. Subconsciously, this problem can obstruct the educational developments in remote areas because of the educational qualities, notably its teachers are really serious. Therefore, problems of Indonesian teachers in remote areas should be handled by improving the qualities of them, and advancing every educational facility to support them in teaching. The problem that still attracts public attention is the condition of teachers in remote areas. Teachers in remote areas still have some problems in teaching qualities. For instance, in Tarakan East Kalimantan, many teachers cant arrange the RPP ( Lesson Plan ) for teaching preparation. They only teach based on a school book they have. This phenomenon will cause bad effect on them while teaching because they do not have plans and strategies to deliver the knowledge properly to their students. Another problem, is the bad teacher recruiting system. Many teachers in remote areas are not ones who master teaching, and they have limited knowledge and ability in teaching. This happens because many teachers just graduated from senior high school, not from teacher colleges. If this situation does not change, it can affect the learning and teaching processes for them and their students, and surely their students cannot be expected to evolve their insights. Lack of educational facilities is another problem faced by teachers in remote areas. Many teachers in remote areas still get the obstacles to teach, due to the lack of educational facilities, for example, the places and medias which support the learning and teaching processes. We often see that the prestigious schools grow rapidly with their adequate facilities in big cities. But in remote areas, the condition is reversed. There are not enough facilities to support the advancement of learning and teaching processes. Consequently, the educational services they give to their students are not in their ultimate level because their competence in teaching just depends on the educational facilities available. So, they cannot update the learning and teaching methods. The problems faced by teachers in remote areas should be handled immediately, and it cant be neglected. The government must take the concrete actions to overcome it. The first step is improving the qualities of remote areas teachers by giving the intensive trainings for them and fixing the recruitment system. To make it easier, the government can ask the educational foundations such as Tanoto Foundation to collaborate in trainings and repairing the recruitment of teachers, for example, giving the guidances to make good RPP with their limited facilities.

In order to fix the teacher recruiting system, the government should take a brave movement. Considering many teachers in remote areas are not the ones who master teaching, the government should give them a chance to continue their study at teacher colleges by making the collaboration with some universities to give the scholarships for teachers and future teachers in remote areas. But, it should be implicated by placing the qualified teachers from developed areas to make the alteration for the education in remote areas, and to fill the emptiness there, until the real teachers in remote areas come up with sufficient quality and quantity. Besides the teachers abilities, another important thing that should be recovered is advancing every educational activity to support teachers, for instance, fixing and building the place for studying, giving the educational facilities for teachers, etc. First step, the government should give the strong warning or punishment for people who have the duty to contribute the assistance, doing corruption, collusion, and nepotism. After that, the government should minimize the obstacles of communication and transportation sectors to simplify the assistance contribution. It will be great, if it is channeled quickly in order to reduce those problems gradually. In short, the problems of Indonesian teachers in remote areas should be settled immediately by enhancing the abilities of them, and developing the educational facilities to support them in learning and teaching. So, it will reduce even misplace the obstacles for them while teaching and learning. It will also make the enormous changes for remote areas because they have teachers with good dedication if the government wants to bring it earnestly.
