Digital Video Planning Activity

Group Members: Jessica Elmore, Noel OBrien, Rebecca Van Pelt AASL Standard: 4.2.4 Show an appreciation for literature by electing to read for pleasure and expressing an interest in various literary formats. Target Audience: The target audience for our digital video is Richmond Hill's second and third grade school serving over 900 students, ages 7 to 10. Richmond Hill Elementary School is comprised of 20 second grade classes and 20 third grade classes, as well as a gifted and EIP class at each grade level. The school culture makeup is 77% White, 12% Black, 4% Hispanic, 2% Asian, and 5% multi-racial. Students with disabilities account for 6% of the school population, and 24% are economically disadvantaged. 97% of the student population passed the Reading portion of the 2012 CRCT. To assess students educational and ability levels, we compiled reading fluency and comprehension data from initial GRASP testing performed in September of this year. This system, which is part of West Georgias RESA Assessment of Student Progress, provides diagnostic information about students specific needs, and tracks the progress of individual students. From analyzing the data, we found that most students have the necessary background knowledge and skills that will supplement the selected AASL standard, as well as prior knowledge of the skills addressed in our objective. Entry-level skills and learning styles vary from below average to above average. Typically the gifted students and advanced readers display different learning styles while the below average readers are more visual in their learning. To determine their level of motivation towards reading, students were given a survey (see Appendix A) asking basic questions about their feelings toward reading to how they feel about collaboration with their peers and reading about other cultures. Survey results show that the majority of students feel very confident in their reading and writing abilities, which is very encouraging. Results also show that the learners, as a whole, enjoy collaborating and reading stories from other cultures. Motivation (ARCS Model): Our video will grab the audiences attention with a catchy introduction that is relevant to the age group, learning styles, and motivation levels of the students. Relevance will be found when the audience makes connections with the actors and real-life events. To promote confidence in the students, the video will encourage the audience to call on previous knowledge and experiences as they find similar interests throughout the video. Further, the video will also present a variety of reading materials that will teach students how to find books that appeal to them. Satisfaction will be attained by the increased confidence that students will feel about knowing how to locate books that peak their interests coupled with the reassurance that the school media center offers them the opportunity and resources to find materials they will enjoy and look forward to reading.

Objective: (C) Using our digital video as a reference, (A) second- and third-grade students will be able to (B) compare and contrast the story elements of a variety of reading genres in order to (D) accurately identify at least two other stories with similar elements.
