KRISTINA SCALA/The Moorestown Sun
The Community House depends on donations to continue to
serve the people of Moorestown. Its Capital Campaign is ongoing.
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
Eldridge Reeves Johnson donated
$250,000 to build a Moorestown commu-
nity center in 1923. That center, the
Moorestown Community House, has
been sitting on Main Street for more
than 80 years, providing a community
atmosphere through local donations.
Recently, the Community House
reached the 25 percent mark for its $2
million Capital Campaign, which was
created to fund improvements and oper-
ating expenses.
According to the Community Houses
website, 20 percent of the funds will go
toward investments and sustainability,
20 percent toward ongoing operations
and community outreach, and 60 per-
cent toward capital improvements.
Campaign president George Schul-
mann said the most recent capital im-
provement project that was completed
was the flooring in the central foyer. But
there are more projects on the list, start-
ing with the parking lot.
Future projects include improve-

The Moorestown Police De-
partment is hoping to use new
technology to track stolen items.
Moorestown Council approved
an ordinance on Monday, April 8,
allowing police to regulate activi-
ties of dealers in precious metals,
gems and secondhand goods.
According to Lt. Lee Lieber,
Maryland and Delaware are cur-
rently using the program. It is be-
ginning to appear in New Jersey
municipalities such as Cherry
Hill, Voorhees and Evesham.
He said this cutting-edge pro-
gram would allow detectives to lo-
cate stolen goods that are sold to
secondhand shops. Additionally,
Lieber said detectives would
spend a few days going from shop
to shop trying to locate stolen
items.
Secondhand shop owners
would register and track purchas-
es by taking photos of purchased
items and entering them into the
database.
Councilwoman Victoria
Napolitano was concerned about
the cost burden a program like
this might have on storeowners.
Lieber said other systems the de-
partment looked into would put
more of a burden on businesses.
This is a real small burden as
to what we will gain from it, he
said.
Lieber said any shop in
Moorestown that purchases sec-
ondhand items is required to reg-
ister, paying a $300 per year fee for
the programs operation.
We had been looking for quite
some time at instituting some
type of system. This system,
within the past year, has come to
light. We dont want to burden the
businesses in the present finan-
cial climate, he said.
The police department is decid-
ing when the program will take
effect.
Its not only going to help us,
its going to help give peace of
mind to residents, Lieber said.
Pryor Park
John Pryor Park will not be
home to a dog park.
On Monday, Feb. 18, John
Matthews, a Troop 44 member,
presented his Eagle Scout project,
to build a dog park in Pryor, to
council. Council approved his
plan, but Mayor Stacey Jordan
recommended he should go door-
to-door explaining the project to

Projects and operating cost
funds come from donations
ments to the HVAC, restrooms, re-
pointing bricks and more.
Schulmann said the funds re-
ceived through the Capital Cam-
paign are spread out over the
course of a few years.
But the money to fund all proj-
ects and operating costs comes
from community donations simi-
lar to Johnsons that started it all.
He said most Moorestown resi-
dents dont realize the Communi-
ty House does not operate using
tax dollars.
Local businesses and individu-
als can contribute to the cam-
paign from cash donations as well
as donations with recognition. Al-
though the campaign is open to
any donation amount, campaign
chair Kevin Kutcher said the
campaign is seeking larger dona-
tions that could easily be spread
out over three- to five-year peri-
ods.
Funds must be raised to keep
the Community House running,
but Schulmann said the Commu-
nity Houses existence is more
than dollars and cents.
For the past 87 years, the Com-
munity House has been a home
away from home for civic organ-
izations and residents in
Moorestown, Schulmann said.
Currently, the Community House
is home to 82 nonprofit organiza-
tions and serves as a memory hub
for Moorestonians who grew up
visiting the Community House.
I learned to swim here,
Schulmann said, adding he would
go to the Community House dur-
ing his younger years for dances
and other activities. Now he is
there every week for the Rotary
Club meeting.
So many people have grown
up with the Community House,
he said.
The Community House was
home to the YMCA and the li-
brary for approximately 50 years.
According to Schulmann, there
are nonprofit organizations cur-
rently using office space in the
Community House and various
organizations hold meetings in
the building.
The Community House has a
60-foot-long heated pool for swim-
ming and scuba lessons as well as
family recreational swimming.
The Community House also hosts
weddings, banquets, bridal and
baby showers, meetings, work-
shops, seminars and more.
Its been a real big part of the
community. Its tough for us to
convey all it has done, Schul-
mann said.

Jewish Association
donates tree
The Moorestown Jewish Asso-
ciation, a relatively new organiza-
tion created to connect Jewish
residents in Moorestown, is team-
ing up with the Moorestown Tree
Planting Committee and local
food pantries to help ensure that
the Moorestown Community con-
tinues to thrive.
For the first official act in
reaching out to the Moorestown
Community, the MJA is donating
a tree for Moorestowns annual
Arbor Day Celebration in honor
of our own holiday Tu BShevat.
On Friday, April 26 at 10 a.m., the
tree will be planted at John Pryor
Park near the concession stand in
between the baseball fields. Pryor
Park is located near the intersec-
tion of Salem Road and Hartford

Matthews said the Boy Scouts
would build benches and tables
and work on landscaping to cre-
ate shaded areas. A contractor
would have put up the fencing.
However, the residents sur-
rounding John Pryor Park
formed negative opinions about
the dog park before Matthews
could present the plan, Township
Manager Scott Carew said.
His project was estimated to be
between $10,000 and $15,000.
Matthews plans to raise money
through various fundraisers and
a dog fair at Moorestown Day on
June 1.
Carew said the Open Space
Committee has selected a new lo-
cation for the dog park. It will be
announced at a later date.
Rec center update
Architect Rick Ragan provided
council with an update on the
Recreation Center improvements.
He said six bids were received
on April 2 ranging from $647,000
to $769,000.
Improvements include the gym
floor, full painting of the exterior,
a new door leading out of the
gym, new reception office, new
restrooms, asbestos removal on
the second floor, a new police of-
fice, new communication and se-
curity systems, new HVAC, pipe
repairs and interior painting.
According to Ragan, four items
were eliminated to make sure the
improvements could be complet-
ed within the $690,000 budget.
They include eliminating the
lighting installation in the gym,
the new ceiling tile in the gym, a
new roof, and removing paint in
the lower section of the stairwell.
Although council did not ap-
prove any bid, accepting the bids
with the deductions would lower
the bid range between $580,750
and $720,000.
We are recommending the low
bid of $580,750, Ragan said,
adding the improvements lost can
be done in the future.
The next council meeting is on
Monday, April 22, in Moorestown
High Schools IT Room.

I
ts that time of the year. That time
when public school Boards of Edu-
cation are finalizing budgets and
announcing to their respective con-
stituents how much more they will pay
in school taxes next year.
We say more because its hardly
ever less.
Homeowners in New Jersey expect
to pay high property taxes, fueled in
large part by taxes from our local pub-
lic school districts. Its a way of life
that, while were not happy with, we
accept.
It seems each year that more and
more families are moving out of New
Jersey because of these high property
taxes, but those people usually dont
move away until after their kids gradu-
ate high school.
Overall, our states public schools
are exceptional its one of the main
reasons that so many families contin-
ue to raise their kids here.
So it should be no surprise and
shouldnt cause too much anger to
learn that New Jersey spends more per
public school student than most of the
country.
The third annual Taypayers Guide
to Education Spending released re-
cently shows that New Jerseys public
school districts spent an average of
$18,0147 per pupil in 2011-12. That was
an increase of 4 percent over the year
before, according to the state.
Yes, that is expensive. But isnt it
worth it?
New Jersey public school students,
as a whole, have some of the best test
scores in the nation. Whats that old
saying: You get what you pay for?
If you want good schools, you need
to spend money.
Can school districts throughout the
state do a better job of spending while
ensuring the best education possible
for students? Of course they can and
they should.
But high school taxes are, unfortu-
nately, a way of life in New Jersey, and
it will continue to be that way for quite
some time.
Property tax relief may be in sight
in the near future, but expecting to pay
what other states pay is unrealistic.
Frankly, we shouldnt want to pay
what other states pay in school taxes,
because we get what we pay for some
of the top public schools in the nation,
which help churn out some of the best
public school students as well.
School taxes are high...
...But so are our kids test scores. Should we really be that upset?
What are your thoughts?
No one likes paying taxes, especially
when they are as expensive as they are
here in New Jersey. But are you getting
what you are paying for? Speak up and
let your voice be heard on the subject.
Reader: N.J. is a police state
with a cop on every corner
In response to a recent editorial in The
Sun, with respect to New Jersey being 48th
of the 50 states in terms of personal free-
doms, may I suggest in contradicting the
writer that this ranking is disgraceful.
Does the writer even know the true defini-
tion of freedom? In the broadest sense,
freedom is being able to do whatever you
want as long as it does not negatively im-
pact your fellow citizens. Why should that
be wrong?
Lets face it New Jersey is a police state
with a cop on every corner, most of whom
are just itching for an excuse to arrest
somebody or charge them with the latest
crime du jour as promulgated by our
jackass legislators in Trenton, who enjoy
controlling every aspect of our lives. As an
example, if they could get away with it, all
firearms would be completely outlawed in
New Jersey. As it now stands, if a home-
owner shoots an intruder, the homeowner
will be raked over the coals and jailed by
police, not the criminal. A young man from
Colorado who had relocated to Mt. Laurel
was given a seven-year sentence in state
prison for paperwork violations related to
his legally purchased firearms brought
here from Colorado. Is this egregious viola-
tion of out Second Amendment rights
going to make us all safer? I think not.
Thankfully, he was pardoned by the gover-
nor after extensive appeals.
Sure, driving while texting or talking on
the phone should be illegal, because if you
crash, its going to impact your fellow
motorist(s). But driving without a motorcy-
cle helmet or not using a seatbelt only im-
pacts the person doing it. What about
smoking cannabis again, it should be a
personal choice. Dont like guns? Dont
own one. Hate cigarettes? Dont smoke and
stay away from people who do. Against
recreational drug use? Abstain! But dont
ram your personal ideologies down the
throats of all others like the control freaks
in Trenton.
We cant have raw milk, we cant have
firecrackers, we cant even swim in a pub-
lic pool in a rain storm (all state laws) all
for our own good, all because our politi-
cians love us and care about us so much
they need to protect us from ourselves
because were a bunch of idiots, too dumb

and, if we dont obey their sense-
less dictates, cops will break your
door down in the middle of the
night looking for drugs and
clobber you over the head; thats
your big fat sloppy wet kiss from
the Nanny State that loves you.
The writer seems to sanction
what are called sobriety check-
points. These police state tactics
are nothing more than illegal, un-
constitutional fishing expeditions
where cops cause a traffic jam on
a busy highway as they harass in-
nocent motorists without proba-
ble cause, while looking for any
excuse to write a ticket or make
an arrest. Then, if a police dog
alerts they have their probable
cause to detain you or tear your
car apart looking for whatever
they can find (or plant). And if
they find nothing they leave your
stuff scattered all over the road
and drive away. Yes, I know people
its happened to.
I agree with the writer in one
respect freedom isnt free. When
our public servants get out of
control and walk all over us like
sheeple, as they do now, we have
an obligation to push back and re-
claim our rights before we end up
as slaves, which is the natural
progression of all government.
As George Washington said, gov-
ernment is not reason, it is not
eloquence, it is force. . .
Its time to send a message to
Trenton (and Washington) we
will not tolerate usurpations of
our constitutional rights. We will
not tolerate police state tactics in
a free society, and we will not
tolerate government control
freaks micromanaging every as-
pect of our existence.
Dont tread on me.

autism and to move toward elimi-
nating the stigma and misconcep-
tions surrounding Autism Spec-
trum Disorders. There are many
ways for individuals to get in-
volved for Autism Awareness
Month and organizations, clubs,
schools and service providers in
our region do amazing work
throughout our state to make this
month successful in its mission.
Here in Moorestown, many of
our friends and neighbors live
with autism and struggle for ac-
ceptance and awareness 24/7 as
countless others do around the
nation. Amazing residents in
groups such as the Special Educa-
tion Advisory Council, and who
take part in programs with the
Moorestown Department of
Parks and Recreation, dedicate
their time to making our town an
accepting and supportive commu-
nity for individuals with develop-
mental disabilities. However, we
need more people to stand up and
get involved to speak for those
who need our help now more than
ever.
One organization that I have
grown to deeply respect, Autism
New Jersey, has a yearly program
that they run known as the
Autism Ambassadors program.
Each year, this program has a
theme (this year, its accep-
tance) and encourages ambassa-
dors to go into their local towns,
workplaces, schools and neigh-
borhoods to educate their friends,
families and neighbors about the
effects of autism and the necessi-
ty for our communities to em-
brace, accept and support these
individuals and their families.
This year, I proudly signed up to
personally become an Autism
Ambassador in hopes that I could
do my part for Autism Awareness
here in Moorestown.
To that end, I recently asked
Mayor Stacey Jordan to issue an
official proclamation declaring
April as Autism Awareness
Month here in Moorestown. The
proclamation was issued at our
town council meeting, and I am
deeply grateful for the mayor
agreeing to stand with me in the

Combining print advertising with an online advertising campaign is the most comprehensive
way to reach all your local customers. But it was an expensive proposition until now.
Sun Newspaper print customers can now take advantage of special online packages and

websites such as Discovery, Comedy Central, Time, Rachael Ray, Facebook, USA Today and
The Weather Channel with advertising on Elauwits hyperlocal websites in South Jersey,
Central Jersey and Philadelphia.
So whether your customers are catching up on local happenings on our websites or
checking in on their friends on Facebook, theyll be seeing your business.
