Manufactures reports record growth figures

N
ewbridge-based contact electronics manufacturer, Axiom Manufacturing Services, has reported a record turnover of 29.9m for its financial year ending 31 December 2012. Turnover was up 5.9m on its original target for the year of 24m. The company also increased headcount from 186 to 235 during the year. Manufacturing, which constitutes 10 per cent of the UK economy, unexpectedly shrank in February 2012, with new orders dwindling, prompting concerns that the sector will be a hindrance to economic growth in the first quarter of 2013 Despite this Axiom, which manufactured printed circuit boards, is bucking the national trend, with turnover up by 51 per cent on last years figures and further growth predicted. David Davies, managing director at Axiom attributes the companys growth to its value added services that supplement its core printed circuit board offering, including: its robust supply chain, design and development team, rapid prototyping for new product introduction (NPI) and its innovative approach to manufacturing. He said: We are focused on the right growth, in the right markets, with the right customers. Were continually developing our offering and technical differentiators and making advances in test, design and quality to meet the needs of our customers in a demanding market place. Now in its 11th year of trading as a CEM, Axiom, which serves the medical, industrial. aerospace and defence markets, has a strong history in high reliability and high technology

HMRC is getting tougher on businesses which do not keep immaculate accounting records. Add to this the need to understand the performance of your business in order to properly manage and control it and you should have adequate reason to get your accounting records spot on. Some small business see this as vital whereas others see it as a menial administrative task. One thing for sure is that organising and maintaining your records is a task which requires constant attention. Daily credit control and banking, weekly billing, monthly bank reconciliations and purchase ledger are the minimum standard. Get it right and it will be a source of meaningful management information to support growth and enhance profits. Get it wrong and you could mask pricing issues, cause losses and open yourself up to HMRC attack. The solution is as follows: Find a system usually a computerised package such as Sage but excel or manual records are equally effective for small business if used properly Implement systems and controls who authorises bank payments/ raising of invoices/ requisition of products and services Train yourself/ your people choose your team (which may be yourself), get some formal training then follow this up with on the job training Ensure constant monitoring of the system and controls and do not deviate from your principles Many businesses are outsourcing these tasks in order to make better use of their limited resources. sectors. Its continuing investment in staff, processes and equipment has enabled the company to weather the storm of the Eurozone crisis, and resist the downward trend that has blighted the manufacturing sector to date. David Davies said: 2012 was a successful year for the company amid a general downturn in the global manufacturing industry. Our goals

for 2013 are to remain focussed on our client model high IP, high tech and low to medium volumes, all while maintaining performance and delivery. Our latest figures demonstrate that the UKs large electronic manufacturing services market has the ability to deliver and I hope this encourages customers to re-shore their manufacturing needs back to the UK.
