Native Son Maxs Speech: Newscast In Book 3 of Native Son, Richard Wright includes several newspaper accounts of the events as they unfold. Now is your chance to play news people and report an objective account of your assigned section of Maxs speech. You will complete this activity in groups and produce the following products: 1. Organized notes 2. A catchy headline 3. A key soundbite 4. Class presentation of your newscastno more than 3 minutes long Timeline Read your assigned section of Maxs speech together. Begin working on group notes, script writing, and organizing your newscast. Practice your newscast. Finalize materials (scripts, notes) to turn in. Check with Ms. P if your group would like to film your newscast outside of class instead of performing in class. 10 minutes to organize last-minute details for your newscast. Present Newscasts. Turn in all finalized materials.

Day 2 After Day 2 -- The Weekend Day 1 of Next Week

In your small group, Complete the following tasks My Groups Assigned Pages: Day 3: 1) Assign Group Roles (some people might take My Group Role(s): 2): 1. Reporters (need 2)you will perform the newscast. Think about costumes, props, and a set to use! Maybe you want to organize background music for your entrance and exit, just like a newscast on TV. You WILL NOT read word-for-word from your scriptyou can only use a script to glance at. 2. Notetakeryou will take notes on group work, outlining what each group member did and what ideas they provided. Type your final submission, please. 3. Script Writeryou will write and typed the script that the reporters will use. Make sure the font is big enough for reporters to read. 4. Directormake sure the newscast is organized. 2) Read your assigned pages together. 3) Begin organizing newscast. Make sure your newscast answers these questions in your report: 1. What is the main argument Max makes here? 2. How does this argument relate to the other themes we have outlined in class discussion (think Wrights philosophy, rape, etc.) 3. How effectively do you think Max is in reaching his audience? EVALUATE his message and PREDICT how his audience will react. 4. What is the key quote here? Use this as a soundbite to use in your newscast.

Once you have completed the tasks above, you are ready to organize your newscast. Start with the script of what each reporter will say and how he/she will present the information.
