Dear Dr. Winter, I am a new (complete) denture wearer. How can I determine what proper fitting dentures "should" look, fit and feel like? Neither my top, nor bottom fit. My top denture doesn't seem to go up far enough and has about a 1/4" gap where EVERYTHING (including saliva) goes under my denture(s) regardless of the denture adhesive I use. They don't line-up, my smile is "lop-sided" and I can't eat. Should my top denture go all the way up to the top/have a gap or be flush? Thanks! Dear Kathy, I am sorry you are having problems. The easiest way to answer your question is to say I have to look at your dentures to evaluate the size of the peripheries, the seal in the palatal area and the retention of the new denture. Dentures should fit intimately to the palate. They should not have a gap that is felt with the tongue. If the denture is extended too far to the back of your mouth it is possible to feel a gap if your soft palate is covered as your soft palate moves during speech and swallowing. If the top denture doesn't seem to go up high enough the dentist needs to evaluate it and make sure there is a good fit and it has been trimmed properly to insure the denture is fully seated. If it is not all the way down, a proper adjustment could allow it to seat further. In the absence of good fit the denture may need to be relined where a new impression is taken in the denture and it is sent to the lab to have additional acrylic added to the inside of the denture. If you can't eat the dentures are not done. I always tell patients the day they take my dentures home they are only half done! The final adjustments to your fit and bite will help insure they are optimal. If they don't line up--and your smile is lop-sided you need to address this with your dentist so they can remedy the situation. If the dentist did one or more try-in visits to check smile display, alignment, bite then they should look great now. Please ask your dentist to address these items until you are satisfied. If not seek a second opinion. Dear Dr. Winter, I had porcelain crowns done 4 years ago and I am just not happy. There is now a space between the teeth and they appear to be too yellow what should I do? Also a space opened up and I didn't wear the retainer I was given with the crowns. Well, presumably you approved them before they were cemented. Patients are always told that the color of crowns will not change so they must approve the

shape and appearance prior to allowing them to be cemented. It is much easier to have a lab change the color of the crowns before they are cemented then to go through the arduous task of cutting them off, retemporizing the teeth, making a new impression and redoing the entire process. Not to mention that cutting crowns off of teeth is not a benign process and can lead to further trauma to the underlying tooth structure and potentially causing the nerves to die resulting in one or more root canals. Not wearing a mouthguard in situations where patients clench their teeth or grind their teeth can allow teeth to move as well so not wearing your mouthguard can really change your bite in certain situations. What common car noises mean

(BPT) - "What is that rattling? Is it serious?" We all can get a little paranoid about a new sound our car is making. Those sounds can certainly be annoying, but what people don't realize is sometimes those sounds may be linked to something more serious. About 7 percent of car crashes are caused by some kind of vehicle failure, with tire degradation and brake system failures topping the list, according to the National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Survey from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. But tire and brake failure aren't the only types of vehicle problems that can lead to accidents - engine, steering system and suspension failures also cause crashes. "Getting your oil changed, tires rotated and brake pads checked regularly not only helps keep your car running smoothly, but it also helps keep you and your family safe," says Matt Myers, senior vice president of claims with Erie Insurance. "It's also important to check your car's transmission fluids and get the 50,000-mile and 100,000-mile checks. It might sound like a lot, but regular preventative maintenance is the best way to keep those strange car noises - and accidents - to a minimum." Here are six common car noises people hear and what they could mean: Humming or groaning When you hear humming while driving at faster speeds, it's a sign there probably is some wear on your tires, which can lead to serious issues. It could be located on the insides of your tires, which is hard to diagnose on your own, but not having it checked is a risk, because the steel belts in the tire might be coming apart. Growling This noise could change or even go away when you turn the wheel, but it is usually caused by a defective front wheel bearing. The change in noise could be a result of the shift in the weight of the car as you turn. Whining and creaking You might hear these noises backing up or turning. It could be the result of a ball joint or tie rod seizing up. Squeaking This can be a high-pitched, steady annoyance that lets you know it's time to get your brake pads checked or replaced. Grinding This sound means two pieces of metal are touching when they shouldn't be. This sound could be a multitude of things: brakes, powertrain, suspension or something else. Whatever the case, a grinding sound means you need to get your car checked out as soon as possible. Hissing A hissing sound might occur after you turn off your ignition and can sometimes be followed by smoke from under your hood. The next time you hear strange noises coming from your car, don't just turn up the radio to drown them out - get them checked by a mechanic. Ignoring those noises today could lead to a dangerous and expensive situation tomorrow.

Green spring car care

Keeping our world green has been a concern for many years., but now keeping money in the bank and food on the table is a concern for millions of Americans as well. A good way to accomplish both is to practice green car care. The most basic way to think about it is that the longer you can maintain your vehicle, the longer you will be able to avoid buying a new one. Spring is the perfect time to get your vehicle inspected and ready for the warmer weather. A few areas that need inspection are the air filter, the oil and oil filter, and the radiator and cooling system. If you are someone who isn't comfortable under the hood, take your vehicle to an auto shop and let them take a look. If you are not mechanically inclined, there still some ways to get your vehicle ready for spring and save some money at the same time. Check your tire pressure. Tires that aren't inflated to the correct PSI (pounds per square inch) create more friction, make the vehicle work harder and use more gas. Keeping your tires properly inflated saves you money at the pump and keeps the planet greener by the use of less gas. The correct pressure will be printed on the tire or found in the owner's manual. Clean the inside of your vehicle with environmentally friendly products. These products can be purchased or you can make your own. There are many recipes for homemade cleaners that can be found online. Instead of using paper towel to clean the windows, use newspaper. It does a great job and you will be using it to get the news AND clean your car. Determine if your auto shop is green. Ask if they recycle oil and antifreeze. Also find out if rebuilt parts are available. The cost of these parts can be 50% less. You'll be saving money and recycling at the same time. Describing a problem to a mechanic

By Craig W. Armstrong "It's like a muffled squeak followed by a high-pitched bong, and sometimes it just hums. It almost sounds like it's humming that old ABBA song...oh, I can't remember the name of it, but it sounds like that." Is this how you explain to your mechanic the noise your vehicle is making? Have you ever used the word "galonk"? Have you ever imitated a Madagascar hissing cockroach when describing a noise or mentioned anything about what it would sound like if someone squeezed a duck...really hard? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you probably need help conveying troublesome sounds coming from your vehicle. Cars and trucks make lots of sounds; some are normal and some are a definite indication that something is not functioning properly. Most people have a good idea of which sounds are normal and which ones need to be checked out. The important thing is to be as accurate as possible when describing those abnormal noises to your mechanic. Like doctors, mechanics need to have a reasonable and thorough explanation of the "patient's" symptoms; they will rely on you to give them that information. Be able to explain when you hear the noise. Is it at start-up or when you turn off the vehicle, when you are going uphill or around a curve, when you're braking or when the gears shift? Be specific in your explanation. Next describe the location of the sound. Rather than using the terms "right" or "left" side of the vehicle, you can avoid confusion by referring to the "driver's side" and the "passenger's side." Is the noise coming from the engine, underneath the car, from the rear, around the tires? You may even want to draw a diagram indicating the troublesome spot. Often a mechanic will test-drive your vehicle and listen for sounds so they can accurately diagnose the problem, but how many times have you taken in your car and it won't make the noise or "do that thing" for the mechanic? The main way to avoid this frustration is to be an expert, prepared witness. Explain any and all known "maladies" associated with the noise. There may be vibration or leaking fluid. Explain where you feel the vibration-in the steering wheel, under your feet, etc. Indicate the location of any leak and the color of the fluid if possible. Are there any other noticeable differences in how the vehicle is riding or handling? To repeat: Be thorough and specific in your explanation. Mechanics expect a certain amount of charades from customers (and they probably enjoy them sometimes), but accuracy in your explanation will help them do a better job of repairing your vehicle and getting you back on the road faster.

Before you buy any technology, it is import to ask yourself a few questions. As with most things, you get what you pay for. The more you spend on a GPS, the more features it will contain. Some GPSs come with a "bundle," which contains extra components. Of course, a GPS can also be purchased by itself. Consider warranty, support and upgrades. The longer warranty you can get, the better. If you are thinking about buying an extended warranty, make sure it covers something that is likely to break down. Make sure there is tollfree or Internet support. Some people don't do well with written instructions, so it's nice to be able to talk to another human being. Talk to whoever is selling you the device about upgrades. Will it require an upgrade? Approximately when will it need an upgrade? What will it cost? Find out if the device is "plug and play." This means is it ready to use right out the box. Consider where you will mount the device in your vehicle. Does the unit come with what you will need to mount it? One of the coolest things about many GPSs is that they can speak. Having a unit that can speak is convenient. It allows you to keep your eyes on the road while it gives you directions. The UPAF (United Performing Arts Fund) Ride for the Arts is set for Sunday, June 2, starting and finishing at the South Gate of the Summerfest Grounds, the intersection of Polk Street and Harbor Drive. Seamless flow from one room to another

By Tresa Erickson In many of today's homes, the floor plans are open, with one room flowing into another. Walk into the front door, and you might catch a glimpse of the living room, kitchen and dining room. With such a vantage point, many homeowners look to create flow from one room to another. If you are among them, here are some tips. Paint: Paint is one of the most inexpensive ways to create flow. And no, you do not have to paint every room the same color. For interest, select a palette of complementary colors and pull from it for the various rooms. Use a deep brown in your living room and a lighter brown in your dining room with teal accents throughout. Paint the walls of your light-filled kitchen teal and add touches of brown throughout. Creating flow is all about selecting two to four complementary colors and using them in different ways from room to room. Pattern: Pattern is another way to connect the rooms together. As with paint, you do not have to use the same patterns throughout the rooms. There should be some similarities among them, however, in particular in color and scale. If you use stripes in your living room, make sure you carry the pattern into the other rooms, even if it's just in a valance or a throw pillow here and there. Finishes: It's all in the details, and to maintain flow, the finishes from room to room should be from similar color families. Bronzed and black fixtures and handles will complement each other well, whereas chrome and brass will not. The chrome handles on your kitchen cabinets will clash with the brass sconces, chandeliers and fixtures everywhere else. When possible, try to stick to the same basic finish. Moldings: Moldings create a line from room to room. Imagine what happens to that line when the baseboards, casings, etc. are of differing sizes and colors. To keep the flow moving from room to room, make sure your baseboards, window casings, chair rails and crown molding are of the same size and color where possible. This is especially important with the baseboards. If you can't afford to replace the moldings, rework them with some paint or stain to match. Decor:Finally, there is decor. Nothing disrupts flow more than a western theme in one room and a nautical theme in another. Choose one basic style of decor or complementing styles for the rooms you want to create flow in. If your living room feels rather homey, don't break it up with a mod kitchen. Keep your cleaned-lined cabinetry and stainless steel appliances, but add homey touches here and there to carry the theme through. Keep in mind that it takes time to create flow in your home. Don't expect it to happen overnight unless you have a brand-new home and the budget to shop for all-new things. Work on it one step at a time, and don't be afraid to mix things up here and there for interest.

ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR Part Time

Exciting opportunity for a high energy, dynamic person with experience creating and running a great activities program for the senior popultation. Our residents are active and want to be engaged every day in a diverse program. This position is located at Wilson Commons - The Polonaise on the southeast side of Milwaukee (13th-Howard area). The ideal candidate will plan the monthly calendar and newsletter, plan events and various outings that would appeal to our residents. The right person will have experience working with memory care support (a certification in Memory Care/Support is a plus!), will have a flexible schedule and is willing to work some evenings and weekends.

Qualifications:

Bachelors degree plus 2 years' experience in a similar role (such as Music or Art Therapy); or equivalent experience working with an adult population. Knowledge of Humanities, Creative Arts, World History and Cultures, Entertainment and Exercise. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Must have a great sense of humor.
