This report gives you the opportunity to demonstrate you meet the competence and commitment standards in UK-SPEC and provides the assessors who interview you with an idea of your strengths and weaknesses. Please attach the following documents as Appendices A to G to this report: A. Copies of all your qualifications including a Notification of Performance for HND / HNC qualifications. Include also a translation if any qualification that is not in English and legal evidence of any change to your surname if it has changed since you obtained them. B. An organisation chart of your company and your position in it. C. Title of any professional development scheme completed, company name and start and end dates. D. This report is divided into Standards A E as given in UK-SPEC and there are sub-headings for each one. Different aspects of your qualifications, work experience and professional development can apply to several sub-headings. Give evidence for each sub-heading.
Standard A should contain reference to your degree, diploma certificates or Licenses together with reference to other courses you have attended which have enhanced your underpinning theoretical knowledge. Standard B is essentially about the application of theoretical competence into type / equipment specific detail. Please give examples of what engineering work you actually perform and for which you hold individual personal responsibility, e.g. part of a team, team leader, sole responsibility or joint author. Standard C (specifically C2) asks for examples of budgetary oversight. This can be fulfilled, even if you do not personally hold a budget, by being involved in for example, forecasting staff-hours or parts replacement options. C3 and C4 enable you to demonstrate competence in selecting, interviewing, motivating and mentoring staff for whom you are responsible. Standard D requires you to give examples of presenting or working with information to the many levels of aerospace engineering interface. Include examples of any kind of presentation or talk given, whether at work or in social situations. Standard E should include examples of how you plan to develop as a Professional Engineer; this should be backed up by your Development Action Plan. In addition, you should recognise that professionals of any kind should have the willingness and competence to support society in general (be it in a professional capacity or getting involved in activities in your local area) and you will be expected during the interview to give examples of what you do or plan to do. The portfolio of evidence which you should bring to the interview should contain the actual evidence to support the statements in the Qualifying Report. It should include your original degree, diploma certificates or License, log books or records kept while on a Professional Development Scheme, technical drawings, sketches, calculations, design drawings, budget spreadsheets, handouts of presentations given, and technical reports or other reports written for your employer. Please ensure your evidence is not commercially confidential, classified or restricted. NB: This report remains the property of the RAeS. Continuous Development
Attended a number of short training courses to broaden and deepen both my technical and professional knowledge and IT skills, e.g. EMI/EMC testing, Mentor Graphics, Presentation skills, Leadership and Management skills, Microsoft Power Point Advanced, Microsoft Project, etc. Through in-company research and self-teaching I gained a comprehensive understanding of the Avionics Navigation systems including Autopilot, Flight Management System, Radio Navigation systems, etc.
Attended a number of Aerospace lectures and conferences to collect information for postgraduate research while at the Moscow Aviation Institute and, when working for the company - to broaden my knowledge of the Aerospace industry.

Engage in the creative and innovative development of engineering technology and continuous improvement systems
While still at university I completed a short placement project at XXXXX to assess the feasibility of installing a stall warning system on XXX aircraft for one of the companys customers. I successfully demonstrated that the proposed system will not provide a sufficient improvement to safety of this aircraft but will give pilots a false sense of security. My findings were agreed and accepted by the customer.
I identified an engineering design solution and located potential suppliers for an aircraft automatic yaw compensation system. Through a series of trade-off studies I was able to down-select to a single supplier.
Conducted comprehensive research into functionality and performance of the Flight Management System on the XXXX aircraft to identify the preferred solution for its replacement. Conducted a series of de-risking exercises (over a period of 2 years) to ensure smooth incorporation of new FMS system on the XXXX aircraft.
Wrote a technical article, entitled "Laser Sensor Technology", on new technology development covering the development of laser and directed energy technology. The article was accepted for publication (see XXXXX September XX issue)

Identify potential projects and opportunities
Identified an optimum solution, compliant with the customer requirements and current regulations. This led to a major upgrade solution including Radio Navigation and Communication systems, Electronic Flight Instrument Systems as well as Stand-by instruments that is now offered to other customers.
Using my experience and expertise in avionics upgrades, I prepared a comprehensive proposal describing the companys technical capabilities and technical aspects of a CNS/ATM upgrade for customer X.
Working closely with the Flight Dynamics department, I evaluated potential design solutions for the automatic trim on XXX aircraft and produced a proposal defining the alternative solutions with cost estimates. I used trade-off studies to identify suppliers for each of the proposed options.
I analysed the implications and practical solutions for modifying and installing weapon systems on existing aircraft. I identified and costed a solution that was accepted by senior management and presented to the customer.

Conduct appropriate research, and undertake design and development of engineering solutions
Prepared a technical proposal for the installation of a Moving Map System on the XXX aircraft. This has been implemented and achieved fleet-wide embodiment.
Carried out an analysis of the existing interfaces between Autopilot, Navigation Systems and displays to identify an optimum solution of integrating the new Navigation Systems and Electronic Flight Information System with the existing analogue Autopilot.
Investigated and analysed the electrical and electro-mechanical solutions for the XXX flying control and engine management systems. This included the throttle management and engine reverse thrust mechanisms. I used this to propose a system upgrade solution.
Led a team researching, coordinating and implementing a sustainment programme that ensured the XXXXX fleet would reach an extended out of service date. I was responsible for ensuring that the fleet continued safe airworthiness was not compromised. I prepared design solution and interface specifications for the new FMS. I assessed the environmental qualifications of the new system, carried out a safety assessment of the new FMS installation to ensure it did not affect aircraft safety. I prepared the Certification and Test Plan to evaluate the new FMS function.

Implement design solutions, and evaluate their effectiveness FMS Characterisation Testing Report: XXXX
Identified design requirements for the modification of the Aircraft Instrument Monitoring System (AIMS) for the purposes of the FMS Characterisation testing and evaluated the design outcomes the accuracy of the AIMS recording the required parameters during flight test was according to the defined specification.
I worked closely with XXXX University to extend feature based cost modelling techniques for integration within system optimisation. I developed a process that formalised trade-off studies, linking system performance to equipment cost.
Prepared the Technical Clearance Report for the XXXX Navigation System Upgrade. Worked with the Original Equipment Manufacturer to define and secure a bespoke data package in support of the Certification and Test plan.

Plan for effective project implementation
Identified customer requirements and specifications. Incorporated them into the Design Specifications for the modification. Prepared and managed Risk Man Plan, organised regular risk reviews and updated the Risk Register for the project. Prepared and maintained a project plan for the IDP managing interactions with other departments, customer and subcontractors. Prepared Statement of Work for the subcontractor. attended numerous meetings with the customer and supplier.
Analysed and incorporated detailed and complex customer requirements for the Autopilot, Display Systems, FMS and Radio Navigation Systems into Design Specifications for both customer and suppliers. Attended numerous meetings both abroad and in the UK with the prime subcontractor such that the overall scope of the contract could be fully defined and priced
Negotiated with other departments agreeing timescales, man power and equipment allocations as well as the overall priorities to produce an implementation plan for the XXX Upgrade. I now have ownership of the agreed, published plan and am responsible for the project delivery.
Developed and controlled a Project Management Plan for the Test Lab relocation. I scoped the requirements for the new location, facilities and equipment, defining and agreeing the associated work packages. I agreed and approved the installation drawings, liaising with the contractors carrying out the conversion work. I arranged production of the risk assessments for the relocation and signed-off the Risk Report.

Plan, budget, organise, direct and control tasks, people and resources
Prepared a project plan for the test activities comprising AIMS data recorder software modification, test equipment installation, ground and flight testing. I co-ordinated the activities of the various departments and subcontractors to implement this plan. I prepared the test activities budget to determine the Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) price of the project. I co-ordinated the post-testing analysis and evaluation of test results and wrote the Test Report.
Prepared a number of budget estimates to determine the ROM for the project. I incorporated the customer requirements in the Design Specifications and created Statements of Work for each of the subcontractors, to ensure timely and efficient completion of design tasks.
Acted as the Design Lead and Project Manager where I directed and managed an integrated project team. I acted as the customers main point of contact, providing design status feedback and achieving customer approval at the Preliminary Design Review, Interim Design Review and Final Design Review. I defined, costed and agreed all "Additional Work" packages.
I was responsible for defining the system requirements for a new PC cluster and the associated system networking. I developed and planed a work breakdown structure and incorporated this into the overall project plan.

Lead teams and develop staff to meet changing technical and managerial needs
During both of these projects I worked closely with junior staff and apprentices, from different engineering backgrounds, to supervised their work. I ensured they got adequate engineering experience by providing them with a variety of tasks within the projects and encouraged them to participate in a range of design activities including design documentation preparation, safety assessments and the analysis of wiring diagrams as well as the analysis of test results.
Provided one-to-one supervision to help the students familiarise themselves with a range of vital avionic activities including safety assessments, analysis of compliance to military and civil standards and design appreciation. I arranged a number of visits to other departments including hangars and rig test facilities to provide a broader understanding of the avionic design processes within the company. I supervised students completing a number of practical tasks as part of their training.
I led a team of six engineers carrying out design tasks. I set individual work packages and provided technical guidance on how to proceed. I monitored progress and performance as well as provided appropriate feedback.

Bring about continuous improvement through quality management
Electrical Loads Analysis
I always prepare all design documents including Design Specifications, Statements of Work, Test Plans and compliance documents in accordance with the company procedures. I discuss and agree them with the company Quality department prior to sign-off. I assist with the compilation of the procedures, within my area of expertise, for the company Design Manuals. I always keep up to date with latest changes in the Design Manuals and ensure these changes are incorporated into the documents I produce.
I reviewed and simplified the ELA methods, creating a comprehensive spreadsheet. This reduced the overall analysis time and used internal automatic checking routines to limit potential errors. The process has since been adopted as a standard tool within the company.
I provide advice and assistance to junior stuff and engage them in a variety of design activities within my area of expertise to ensure their continuous professional development.
I represented the design team as part of the company LEAN implementation project. This involved critically reviewing the different manufacturing processes, with a view to simplifying each process and eliminating wasteful activities. I acted as the focal point for all design related queries.

Communicate in English with others at all levels
I maintained and managed the official technical correspondence between the company, customer and FMS supplier. This included: preparation and delivery of presentations and agendas for the meetings; preparation and management of electronic co-ordination memorandums and other technical documents. I continuously interacted with the GPS supplier at both engineering and project management levels to ensure correct design implementation which includes emails, phone conferences, technical meetings at the company and at subcontractor facilities in the UK and abroad.
As part of the company avionics team I worked at the Air Show exhibition promoting company products and solutions. This involved providing technical advice and expertise to potential customers and visitors of the stand.
I give lectures and talks on avionic systems and navigation solutions to students. This involves preparing and delivering formal presentations.

Present and discuss proposals
As part of the course, I conducted a number of engineering projects, preparing and making presentations on the findings at the end of each project.
I routinely give presentations to senior management, seeking sign-off to design proposals where I have to champion and defend both the technical and financial aspects of each proposal.
Made presentations, on avionic design engineering, to school children from different age groups, aimed at raising awareness about and encouraging interest in engineering as a profession.

Demonstrate personal and social skills
I always discuss my personal strengths and weaknesses with my line manager during my annual appraisals including any improvements I have achieved during the year. All my managers commented that I integrate well into the teams and am friendly and easy going with people.
I integrated well with other course members including British and international students, all coming from different backgrounds. I have successfully completed all individual and team work assignments and received positive feedback on my interpersonal skills from my fellow students and the tutors. I frequently host visits form different customers and other dignitaries. The company encourages school visits and I play an active role in these.

Every year I get to work with different placement students and one of my responsibilities is to help him/her to integrate into the team and familiarise himself/herself with both technical and social parts of the job.

I observe the official Secret Act and Export Compliance requirements. I keep up-to-date with the latest changes in company procedures.
Completed a report detailing the FMS modification compliance to the Defence Standard 00-970 and certification substantiation, also verifying compliance with the customer requirements. I ensured that all information under my control is being exchanged between the company and subcontractors in accordance with export compliance regulations. I ensure that all equipment proposed for the installation is compliant with relevant airworthiness requirements.
I lead and participate in different Design and Gate Reviews that demonstrate compliance with customer, product, business and environmental requirements.

Manage and apply safe systems of work
I prepared a number of Safety Assessments and made Safety Statements which included substantiation analysis of modifications to ensure the modification is safe to install on the aircraft and will not adversely affect the safety of people on board.
Avionics Upgrade Bid for XX; FMS IDP, FMS Characterisation for the XX
I prepared test plans for both ground and flight testing. These require in-depth knowledge of aircraft safety requirements and the safe operation of the systems, both on the ground and in flight, including flight operating envelopes and the FMS input parameters commanded to an Autopilot for continued safe flight. Together with the structural engineers I evaluated the safety of test equipment installation that was required for the FMS characterisation.
I carryout COSHH assessments before specifying products within different design documents.
I always observe all Health and Safety requirements in accordance with company procedures.

Undertake engineering activities in a way that contributes to sustainable development
When participating in test activities for the FMS Characterisation I strongly opposed fuel dumping after the heavy weight tests as this could cause pollution. I persuaded the customer to conduct Air-to-Air refuelling instead.
Throughout the XXX project we have followed a systems engineering protocol that provides greater product and equipment traceability. This allows the company to demonstrate compliance with customer and environmental requirements.

I am involved with the neighbourhood engineering project and visit schools where I provide information about careers in engineering.

Carry out continuing professional development necessary to maintain and enhance competence in own area of practice
I successfully completed a postgraduate course from the Institute for Manufacturing at XXX University. The course focused on the management aspects of engineering and the professional development of engineers from different backgrounds. The course allowed me to gain a comprehensive knowledge of various management systems, operational and quality management, continuous improvement in engineering, marketing, leadership and team-working skills.
RAeS Membership
Acquired RAeS membership in June XXXX which enabled me to gain access to a wide knowledge base via main and local branch lectures, monthly magazines and the Society library. I used the Society's mypath to record my CPD and evidence for CEng registration.
Completed Sales and Marketing course to assist me in commercial and marketing aspects of my job. I am currently an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (ACIM) which gives me access to a range of marketing tools and materials that I apply in my engineering job when preparing proposals, interacting with existing and potential customers, etc.
I regularly attend various lectures and presentations in engineering and science to keep up-to-date with latest developments in industry and science. I read industry magazines (Flight International, Aerospace International, Aerospace Professional, Space News, etc) and attend international aerospace exhibitions.
