How do you use what you know to live your very best life and how then to extend that outwards to others? Exactly five winters ago, flying back from San Diego, having spent 3 days with an amazing teacher, the answer became crystal clear. I used this question to power this publication. Every article in every issue flows from the principle that we always have the potential to know more and get better ~ in a trillion different ways. Our 5th birthday celebration marks the fact that we have sunk deep roots and look forward to providing you, the reader, with honest alternative information that mainstream sources cannot / will not carry because they do not care or fear losing support, advertising and funding and fear Big Brothers Evil Eye. We hope that eye slides right past us. But weve had our moments. The Healing Journal has been banned from several locations - most amusing in hindsight. We wear these peculiar situations as a badge of honour. Here are two examples. Astrology and Hands-on-Healing apparently represents the work of the devil, no less. Good to know! And, in a politically correct, yet insincere organic grocery store, THJ is unwelcome as apparently our seriously referenced and brilliantly reasearched works on unfermented soy was deemed uncomfortable for the bottomline and we were conventiently labelled un-scientifc. At our next anniversary, five years from now, that will all be water under the bridge as then we will be living in very different and interesting times. Our enthusiasm will remain unwavering. Two years ago, when Oprah celebrated the first five years of her magazine, she commissioned a gold lam dress for the occassion and the cover... tempting... Instead, I opted for a make-over, ~ mine ~, that well chronicle, starting in the next issue. This make-over is with the help of some of the people youve come to know through THJ. Thank you for your gift of loyal readership. And above all thank you to all the advertisers committed to The Healing Journal who are the backbone of its existence.

Saving the World with Biodynamic Farming

One farmer, one cow, one planet

What if the world were an apple? One quarter of the apple is land and the rest is water. Cut the land in half and put aside that which is deserts and mountains. Quarter what is left and the peel of one of those quarters represents the topsoil that must feed the whole world. This analogy illustrates how important it is to get the best out of the available soil to provide abundant and nutritious food for everyone on the planet [1].
Peter Proctor is a soil scientist who has worked with the stuff for over sixty years [2]. His favourite invertebrate is the earthworm, which he describes as the unpaid servant of soil health and his favourite animal is the cow because of all the dung it provides. Dung is something that Proctor prizes more highly than gold, jewels, fossil fuels, or many other natural resources. His recommendation for green-fingered gardeners and for the long term sustainability and security of global agricultural systems is the same: a complex preparation of medicinal plant material (see Box) added to compost, manure and slurry. The mineral enriched compost preparations lessen soil compaction, enhance the quality of topsoil, increase microbial activity and encourage earthworms. What is biodynamic agriculture? Biodynamic agriculture is an advanced form of organic agriculture with an emphasis on food quality and soil health [5]; and as such, uses no synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. Biodynamic originates from two Greek words, bios meaning life, and dynamos meaning energy. The pioneer of biodynamic agriculture was Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925) an Austrian scientist, philosopher, and educator. He identified the deleterious effects on the soil and the deterioration of the health and quality of crops and livestock that farmers experienced following the introduction of chemical fertilizers at the turn of the twentieth century. In a series of eight lectures known as the Agricultural Course made in 1924 [6] Steiner taught the fundamental ecological principle that the farm is a living organism, an individual self-contained entity within a whole harmonious system. (This is similar to the idea that a sustainable system is like an organism [7]. In 1928, the first ecological label Demeter was used to certify the high quality nutritional food produced by organic and biodynamic agriculture. Since then biodynamic farming has developed to be one of the most sustainable and successful forms of organic agriculture practiced in forty countries across the world [9]. A biodynamic farm is characterized by self-sufficiency and biological diversity where crops and livestock are integrated, nutrients are recycled, and the health of the soil, the crops and animals, and the farmer too, are maintained holistically. The strength and resistance to disease of the whole system is crucial, so genetically modified organisms (GMOs), which originate from forcing bits of DNA including those from viruses and bacteria into plant cells are excluded altogether. Instead indigenous seed varieties and breeds best suited to the natural conditions (bedrock, soil, weather, flora and fauna, insects, birds and human populations) are developed for the specific locality and further distances too. systems weave together natural plant, animal and mineral resources within environmental limits to enhance the quality of soil and crop production and bring about ecological balance. Consideration of the farm as an ecosystem feeds into holistic management practices that embrace the environmental, social and economic aspects of the farm. Its objectives differ significantly from those of conventional agriculture, or agribusiness, which maximizes profit with mechanical and technological inputs for unlimited exploitation of the earths resources. The biodynamic model feeds family and farm workers first, and then trade surpluses to the local community. A central belief is that specific natural substances are carriers of forces that create life (see Box, next page), and that celestial rhythms, primarily the phases of the moon, directly affect terrestrial life. One main difference between organic and biodynamic farms is that organic farms often exclude animals for ethical reasons and monocrop production is common. Why a biodynamic farming revolution? Biodynamic farms have broad ecological implications as a blueprint for agriculture when fossil fuels are scarce. But they have cultural implications, too. Today biodynamic and organic farming methods represent a revolution, one farmer at a time, against the vested interests of agribusiness disguised as science and the global dominance of corporations such as Monsanto, ie. a form of non-chemical, non-toxic farming that does not require the use of any hybrid or GM seeds. The impact of stopping traditional methods of seed saving and swapping, and taking farmers to court for patent infringement where they are fined, is ludicrous. What are biodynamic compost preparations? The methodology of biodynamic compost preparations in a contemporary setting is not voodoo doodoo, or muck and magic as detractors have cursorily labelled it, but instead a scientific combination of six medicinal plant extracts and two field preparations (see Box, next page). Dr John Reganold is the Regents Professor of Soil Science at Washington State University. He says that people may think biodynamic agriculture is strange because of the preparations, but they are so different it would be hard for anyone other than Steiner to come up with them [1]. The biodynamic preparations (BD) consist of recycled mineral, plant or animal manure extracts that are fermented over time and added in homeopathic or very dilute quantities, to compost piles, manure and slurry, which are then applied to the soil or sprayed directly onto plants. The specific properties of the medicinal compounds such as calcium (Ca), silica (Si02) and iron (Fe) regulate the decomposing and humus-forming processes in the soil and provide the rich base needed for healthy plant growth. Without humus, soil is lifeless and lacks the three major nutrients, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) that plants need to thrive. As P and K are not present in the air, they are biodynamically farmed into the soil by enriching compost with the BD preparations. Thus nourished soil strengthens plant roots and generally produces nutrient rich crops not deficient in trace elements such as selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn). Reganolds own studies demonstrate that soils treated with organic or biodynamic compost have a greater capacity to support soil microorganism activity than soils managed with mineral fertilizers and pesticides [13]. One study showed that BD preparations are effective in homeopathic quantities and significantly affect compost development by raising the temperature slightly higher to 3.5 degrees over the first eight weeks [14]. Another study that paired sixteen conventional farms with biodynamic farms found that biodynamic farms have better soils and are more profitable [15]. Biodynamic compost piles are known as windrows and can be up to 2ft high and 12 feet long. Windrows are built upon alternating layers of

brown organic matter such as dead leaves which provides carbon and green plant matter that provides N. The BD preparations (see box, next page) are placed 5-7 feet apart in strategically placed holes at around 20 inches deep in the pile. BD preparation liquid valerian is poured into one hole and applied all over the outside by spraying, or hand watering. The windrow is then scattered with a few handfuls of soil, covered with straw and left to decompose for six months to one year. Organic residues break down into smaller particles and are then re-synthesised into complex humic substances. Research shows that low tech methods of composting are just as effective as mechanized methods at stabilizing nutrients and humus [16]. Biodynamic preparations threatened in Europe The use of buried animal parts to make BD preparations (see Box, next page) has always been controversial. Peter Proctor explains that cow horns retain some of the enzymes from the animals digestive system that act as a catalyst to further aid compost fermentation [1]. However, biodynamic farmers in Europe are facing a challenge from European Union Regulation 1774/2002 that prohibits the burial of any parts of fallen livestock on farms [17], despite no cases of BSE ever being found on biodynamic, or Demeter certified farms anywhere in the world. In contrast, outbreaks of animal disease such as BSE, Foot and Mouth and now, Avian Flu and Blue Tongue are ever-present threats in conventional intensive farming systems. In the largest outbreak was in the UK in 2001: 594,000 cattle and 3,334 000 sheep were culled in an outbreak of Foot and Mouth, which cost the taxpayer $8 billion intenationally and which calls into question the economic and environmental sustainability of conventional industrial farming. The six medicinal plants used in biodynamic compost preparations are: Arrow flowers (Archillea Millefolium) are connected to the potassium and sulphur processes and helps to draw in beneficial substances to replenish soil growth tired from many years of cultivation. Chamomile flowers (Matricaria recutita) are connected with the living calcium processes that stabilise plants nutrients, dampens down excessive fermentations and improves growth. Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica) the whole plant has a relationship to iron and helps to stabilise nitrogen. Oak Bark (Quercus robur) is calcium rich and helps to ward off diseases and fungal attacks. Dandelion flowers (Taraxacum officinale) are connected with the living silica processes activating influences in the soil and enabling the effective interrelationships of nature. Valerian flowers (Valeriana officinalis) have a strong affinity to the activity of phosphorus. They are extracted into water and sprayed over the entire compost surface Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) all parts of plant used dilute as a foliar spray fungicide for plant leaves. One level teaspoon of each preparation is added to a seven to ten tonne compost pile. The two medicinal plants used in biodynamic field preparations: Horn manure is BD enriched cow manure packed inside a female cow horn and buried in the ground 40-60cm deep in autumn. In spring the fermented compost is ready to be dug up and diluted in homeopathic quantities (one teaspoon to 40-60 litres of water) then stirred for an hour in clockwise and anti clockwise directions every other minute before being applied directly onto the soil. The dynamizations, or stirring, creates a vortex that imbues the biological compounds and the water with the fundamental principle of plant life, Order arising out of chaos [1]. One cow horn used dilute for 1 hectare of land. Horn silica is powdered quartz packed inside a female cow horn and buried for six months through spring and summer. A dilute preparation is then applied as a foliar spray to stimulate and regulate plant growth. One cow horn used dilute for 25 hectares of land.

e have all heard of folk remedies, possibly ones our grandmothers swore by, that consisted of such things as mustard plasters, unusal homebrews consisting of onion juice with brown sugar or other such tasty treats. I remember the woolen socks moistened with cold water that were worn to bed to draw down a fever or cold. One cure I recently heard of while on my travels in Europe, eminated from Normandy at the sea-side town of St.Valerie-sur Somme, where a Benedictine saint was well known for his help with those suffering from fevers. His Latin name was Walaricus and he died in 622 AD as St.Valerie. The Benedictine Order that he was part of, also built a monastic farm with a chapel inland near the present southern Dutch city of Nijmegen (Holland).Today there is merely a remnant left of this building. People came from far and wide to find relief and healing for serious fever for themselves

as well as loved ones. One would tear a piece of clothing which had been worn by the sick person on the previous night and attach it early the next morning to an oak surrounding the St.Walricks / St. Valerie Chapel. Legend has it that the fever would disappear as quickly as snow in the sun. Word of the success of these healings spread and even to this day this practice continues, as seen in the picture below. There are stories about the fever tree of the St.Walricks legend which go back to Charlemagne (742 - 814 AD) who was visiting the Nijmegen area and got quite a fever. An old woman at the Valkhof court told him about the fever tree, a piece of silk was tied onto the tree and he was healed. So, as you can see, the legend and the oak may even have shaped some historical events. Another, even older story/legend from around 700 AD was about Heribertha, a daughter of the leader of a heaten tribe and often suffered from fever attacks. From the day she hung a piece of linen from her clothing to the tree near her house she was permanently healed of the fever. As thanks, her father built the chapel. Whatever was there first, the fever tree or the chapel, no one knows exactly. The oldest nearby oak pressed into healing service today is approximately 100 years old and is surrounded by other younger ones ...to last us a long time.

Communicating our feelings about these things may not necessarily help, if they are not shared in an openhearted way, or if the other is not ready to hear what we have to say. Perhaps we can take our cue from the great 13th century mystical poet, Jalaluddin Rumi, who said: Wherever you stand, be the soul of that place. This applies to our hearts as well as our physical surroundings. It expresses the highest relationship to others and to Life itself. When we can be the soul of the relationship that we are in, when we can remember that this person whom we might be upset with just wants to be seen through the eyes of Love, we can change the lens through which we are looking, and instead of seeing only the daily problems and accompanying flaws in the other, we can see God. We can often shift out of our dissatisfactions in relationships when we focus on what we are grateful for rather than on what is lacking. When we focus on our complaints, we will reinforce others shortcomings, but when we focus on love, gratitude, and forgiveness, then we empower the other. This applies not only to our personal relationships but to our world as well. Another practice that helps transcend blame and hatred in relationships is to ask ourselves this question: What part of me is he or she expressing right now? This is an effective way to own the deficiencies that we so often project onto others. None of us is free from darkness. This contemplation can help us develop compassion and love for the other because it reminds us of our own foibles. When we keep even one person out of our hearts, we keep out everyone, including ourselves.

Such complaints are reflected in our divorce rates, which are unprecedented, and they beg the question, What is the real purpose of relationships? Many people are coming to recognize that relationships based on externals such as sex or power or just not wanting to be alone, are like houses built on shifting sand. They wont hold up when the waves and the storms come. The delirium of romance can be intoxicating, but once the honeymoon stage has passed, unless we deepen our connection to the real essence of Union, we will only flit to other conquests, never experiencing the deep rewards arising from relationships based on Love. The turmoil of personal relationships is exacerbated by stress arising from the acceleration of time and the proliferation of technology, and is reflected in the violence and wars in the world, and in the destruction of our planet. The Hindu scriptures speak about this age as Kali Yuga the dark age of man, or the age of quarrel and confusion. At such a time, all of our ego tendencies are amplified, which is problematic on the one hand, but also poses a unique opportunity for our souls to evolve more rapidly than they would otherwise. Just as coal, when subjected to intense heat and pressure, can become a diamond, the human being, subjected to the intensity of Kali Yuga, can become one with the God Self, which is the true Source of relationships.

5 Beliefs That Cause Healers and Counsellors to Struggle with Fee Setting and Collecting

The topic of fees and money in general is often a taboo subject amongst therapists, holistic counsellors and other healers. There is a belief that holds that because you are called into a profession that provides healing services to others, that it is somehow unethical, unspiritual or even greedy to think about what you are getting from the experience. This kind of thinking is a big problem if you plan to earn a decent living practicing your profession. If you dont identify and eliminate beliefs that tell you its not appropriate to charge what youre worth, you will never be successful in your business. If providing a healing service is a hobby, or a way of picking up a little extra money on the side, then what follows in this article does not apply to you. However, if you are serious about having a successful business in counseling in the healing arts, you should continue reading. Either you are running a business, or you are not. Either you want and need to earn a living or you do not. And if you do want and need to earn money, there are certain things you must do if you want to be successful. Coming to terms with any issues you have around money and the setting and collection of fees then becomes essential. Below are five common beliefs that hinder Counselors and Healers ability to come to terms with getting paid sufficiently for their services. 1 I Shouldnt Be Concerned About Money as I Love the Work I am Doing Many professionals feel they are providing a service to humankind that they should do out of the goodness of their hearts. Sometimes this is an explicit belief. At other times its more implicit in that practitioners dont fully realize they have this thought or even understand how it is holding them back. Part of the problem is that many helping professions have been plagued by this kind of thinking for a long time so its not surprising that counsellors and healers end up internalizing it. Providing a counselling or healing service helps others live happier and healthier lives and this is certainly a valuable service to offer in the world. However, this doesnt mean you shouldnt get paid appropriately for what you do. Earning a healthy income and providing a valuable service to humanity are not mutually exclusive. If you are holding a limited belief about this, you need to find a way to change it--and fast, if you care about your success! 2 My Clients Cant Afford Higher Fees While it is true that some clients will not be able to afford your fees, being able to afford something is often a matter of what is called perceived value in the marketing field. Just because someone says they cant afford something, doesnt mean they cant. It is often a case of them not full understanding or appreciating the value of what you are offering so they decide it isnt a priority for them. I am sure you have met many people who earn an excellent living, who stated they couldnt afford your services. On the other hand, there are people that are truly scraping by financially and yet, find a way to pay for your services because they make it a priority in their lives. If your service is important to people and they perceive it as being able to help them, many will often find the money by simply shifting their priorities.

If you continuously find that your potential clients are telling you they cant afford your fees you might want to think about how you are articulating the value you provide. Another problem may be that your marketing message is flawed and is attracting the wrong people. If you are marketing to people without sufficient funds to hire you, perhaps its time to find a way to market to a different audience. You can always offer a reduced rate or pro bono services to a set number of people who cant afford your fees. However, you dont have to do that for everyone. 3 There is Too Much Competition in My field While it is a reality that there is a growing competition for those offering services or products in the healing arts, increased competition is not necessarily bad for business. In fact, more competition actually increases public awareness of the value of counselling and healing services, which can mean more clients for you in the long run. Another problem inherent in this belief is that many healing professionals dont have a focused niche audience that they market to, nor do they have a clear and well-articulated marketing message. It doesnt matter what kind of practice you have, or how much competition there is, you will always find people offering similar services and products that are getting paid what they are worth. In fact, sometimes they have more clients than they can handle. These professionals have learned how to market effectively, and the first step in doing this is having a marketing message that stands out from the crowd. The more unique and compelling your services sound, the more people will be willing to pay you. 4 I Cant Charge More Than Others in My Field There is a common belief that tells you that you have to charge the same fees as what others are charging for similar services. Again, its a matter of perceived value. People often will pay higher fees if they think its worth it to them. If you can show that you are worth the fees you are asking, the price wont be an issue for many people. Charging more than others often gives the perception that you must be better at what you do. People want to feel that they are hiring the best and are often willing to pay for services they believe to be exceptional. If you feel you offer great value for your services and they are worth more than the going rate, you might want to consider charging what you feel you are worth. Again, you can always choose to lower your fees for select people who are struggling financially.

You do need to feel confident in what you are charging or your prospective clients will pick up on your uncertainty and lack of confidence and conclude you are not worth your fee. Furthermore, if you have an amateur looking and non-compelling website or otherwise dont present yourself professionally, you will have difficulty getting paid the fees you want to be paid. If you dont value yourself or the services that you offer enough to present yourself in a professional manner, how can you expect others to value you? In summary, you need to remember that keeping your fees low only devalues your services, giving the impression that you are not good at what you do. Unless you are happy offering low fees, perhaps its time to examine your beliefs and get paid what you are worth!

One Drop of Blood

When you first see your live blood sample on a monitor you see a multitude of living, various shaped, particles doing the back-stroke, as well as red and white cells and more - a complete microcosm. Schools of subtley moving red cells! How they wear their information on their exteriors! These little flexible 7.2 micron discs, that look like frisbees, are always uniform in size and shape in a healthy person. But when we see irregularities, we can also see where the imbalances are. For example, a dark internal ring in the centre of the red cells means the microscopes light is refracting differently and indicating a thinner and too shallow a centre and compromised and often have a shorter shelf life. This structural defect is an iron deficiency - lack of rebar! Then there are red blood cells that are larger than the norm and we know they are missing B12 and Folic acid - an essential requirement for each cell in our bodies - a serious requirement, as it allows our cells to make a polymerase in order for us to replicate DNA in each new cell our bodies make - we make new cells by the hundreds of thousands per minute. With this deficiency the nucleus in the forming new red cells grow more slowly but not the rest of the cell surrounding the nucleus and so when the nucleus is finally mature and the red cell is released to do business, the rest of the cell is extra mature and larger and therefore differing in size. First, you feel tired and if enough of this hanky panky is going on you could acquire peripheral nerve pain. And all just because of a lack of B12 and Folic acid. B12 can be stored in the liver - a years supply, in fact, and Folic acid is available in foliage. To eat foliage is one thing but to convert greens to Folic acid is another, even if we eat enough greens. There are several key chemical reactions between the food on our plates and the growth factors at the cellular level and 20% of us have a folate activation challenge! Good to know and see. White cells... they are interesting creations! We all have six different kinds on board and each has its own form and functions! When you watch them go about their business you can only marvel at the honourable display of workaholic behavior and after a few moments of raptured viewing, these infinitesimally small bits of life, which can only be seen at 9000X magnification, seem to behave like beings on their own - in pursuit of their targets, changing shape and contents and moving about their business in a steady and unfaltering way weaving in and amongst the red cells and being in service. Some white cells are in the majority - neutrophils. Some white cell types only show up when your body is focussed on allergies or parasites. Some white cells are spectacularly bright and beautiful and some appear dull and boring. For example, the monocyte, looking like a modest wall-flower, is one powerhouse when necessary - when there is an infection, then the more the merrier. No infections - then very few monocytes to be found. Each red cell has a positive charge internally and requires a negative charge around the outside - zeta potential. When this charge is faulty, the red cells are not repelling each other nor staying separated. When this sort of hugging goes on, often in neat and tidy rolls of discs like a roll of coins (below), then we have lots of information! We know that red cells need to be like Lone Rangers and travel on their own when. When they are rolled up together and when these rolls are even sometimes rolled up against each other, then its more like a posse trying to ride on one horse. One little flexible red cell can just barely roll itself up to make it through the capillaries to travel throughout and a party of discs doesnt stand a chance of going through these narrow spaces = circulatory problems. So, how are the nutrients going to be passed on to the cells and have the garbage picked up?

Why dont I have this evaluation done at my G.Ps office? Darkfield microscopy is used almost exclusively by alternative health advisors, rather than conventional physicians. The reason is not that darkfield microscopes are exotic: they are standard equipment employed in high-end microbiology laboratories. With their unique benefits, then, why is darkfield not used by primary care physicians? Few doctors have the time to look for themselves at their patients blood, let alone show patients what they see and explain what it all means. Neither does microscopy work into the modern medical paradigm of one disease, one drug, one outcome. Live blood analysis shows the complexity and variability of the entire blood ecology. Preventative use, before any serious symptoms appear, is educational and also time consuning. According to todays standards of practice, that relegates microscopy to the sidelines..

from Thierry Roge at Reuters A proposal that Europes top environment official made last month, to ban the planting of a genetically modified corn strain, sets up a bitter war within the European Union, where politicians have done their best to dance around the issue. Science advisers told the European official Stavros Dimas that Bt corn was unlikely to pose a risk. He suggested banning it. He had based his decision squarely on scientific studies suggesting that long-term uncertainties and risks remain in planting the so-called Bt corn. But when the full European Commission takes up the matter in the next couple of months, commissioners will have to decide what mix of science, politics and trade to apply. And they will face the ambiguous limits of science when it is applied to public policy. ... But Europe has been under increasing pressure from the World Trade Organization and the United States, which contend that there is plenty of research to show such products do not harm the environment. Therefore, they insist, normal trade rules must apply. ... Science is being utterly abused by all sides for nonscientific purposes, said Benedikt Haerlin, head of Save Our Seeds, an environmental group in Berlin and a former member of the European Parliament. The illusion that science will answer this overburdens it completely. He added, It would be helpful if all sides could be frank about their social, political and economic agendas. ... Within the European scientific community, there are passionate divisions about how to apply the growing body of research concerning genetically modified crops and in particular Bt corn. That strain is based on the naturally occurring soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis and mimics its production of a toxin to kill pests. The vast majority of research into such crops is conducted by, or financed by, the companies that make seeds for genetically modified organisms. Where everything gets polarized is the interpretation of results and how they might translate into different scenarios for the future, said Angelika Hilbeck, an ecologist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. ... Ms. Hilbeck says that company-financed studies do not devote adequate attention to broad ripple effects that modified plants might cause, like changes to bird species or the effect of all farmers planting a single biotechnology crop. She said producers of modified organisms, like Syngenta and Monsanto, have rejected repeated requests to release seeds to researchers like herself to conduct independent studies on their effect on the environment. About 40 percent of corn in the United States is now the Bt variety.

Twenty foot long by six foot wide, the reactors produce 200kW of energy and run themselves: the entire thing is manufactured with the fuel within, and when it runs out, they can just send a truck to pick it up. Unlike traditional nuclear reactors the new micro reactor uses no control rods to initiate the reaction. The new revolutionary technology uses reservoirs of liquid lithium-6, an isotope that is effective at absorbing neutrons. The Lithium-6 reservoirs are connected to a vertical tube that fits into the reactor core. The whole whole process is self sustaining and can last for up to 40 years, producing electricity for only 5 cents per kilowatt hour, about half the cost of grid energy. from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, December 2007 The dietary supplement L-carnitine can lessen fatigue and boost mental function in very old people (66 male and female centenarians were tested), Italian researchers report. Study participants given L-carnitine also experienced significant increases in muscle mass and reductions in fat mass. Cholesterol levels fell significantly. L-carnitine helps cells to produce energy from fat. The highest concentrations of the molecule are found in parts of the body with high energy demands, such as the skeletal muscles and the heart. The individuals who took the supplement also scored higher on a test of mental function after treatment. Overall concentrations of L-carnitine decline after age 70.

About a dozen food industry groups are pushing to change long standing federal standards to allow cocoa butter to be replaced with up to five percent of another vegetable fat, which could save chocolate manufacturers millions of dollars. Currently, manufacturers are allowed to substitute cocoa butter in their products, but they are not allowed to call it chocolate. The maker of M&Ms, Dove chocolate and Snickers will continue to use 100 percent cocoa butter in its U.S. chocolate products.
