Who has a more accurate shot - Boys or girls in Year 8?

In math we had to conduct a test and collect data from it. We learnt how to find the median, mean, range and mode. We will have to take in the information we learnt and use it in our project. Below is the data and its analysis. What was the experiment: I and Ken conducted a test to see who has a more accurate shot. We got 20 boys and 15 girls to take the following experiment: Everyone had to shoot a size 4 soccer ball from 10 feet away. The targets width was 2 feet. Hypothesis: My hypothesis was that boys would have more accuracy than girls and boys play more soccer and are more competitive. I had a feeling that many boys would kick it hard instead of just placing their shot which probably decreases their score. Why I Chose This Topic: I chose this topic because I am very interested in football and sports. I also wanted to find out why girls dont play as much sports/soccer as boys. Is it because girls are not good at it or because nobody else plays it? Research Question: Who has the more accurate shots in Y8, boys or girl?

Data Collection

I got my data from the whole 8d class (including myself) and a few other members for other classes. I found it hard to get all a big sample of the year 8 to take my test because it was set downstairs and many people did not want to come downstairs because it took a lot of time. Maybe next time I should have done an easier test like a survey where it would be much easier to collect data. On the next page, are the boys accuracy results as well as graphs and analysis? Also on the next page is the frequency table that I used to organize the raw data I got, and to calculate the mean, median and the mode. If you want to see the raw data table that I used, see the appendix on the last page.

Shots on target

Out of 60 shots the boys scored/hit the target 25 times. They shot 41.6 per cent of their shots on target.
Boys Mean: Number of shots scored/fx (25) divided by (number of people taking test) 20 = 1.25 Boys Median: Out in order and find middle one. In this case the middle number is 1 shot scored Boys Range: Is highest number minus lowest = 2 shots scored Boys Mode: The Most = 1 shot scored

Analysis=

This data tells me that boys usually scored 1 shot on target. After conducting this experiment I learned that most boys scored their first shot in and then missed their next 2 shots. This might be because after the boys scored their first shot they became too confident or maybe because they tried to kick harder to prove that they can do better. This matches with the stereotype that boys are more competitive than girls. Heres another table that proves this. It shows when the boys scored their shots on target/ The first shot, second shot or third shot.

They results surprised me a lot because I expected boys to do get most of their shots in as they have more experience playing soccer.

Girls Accuracy Test Results

8 Frequency of shots scored 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0 0 1 2 3 shots on target Frequency

Out of 45 shots girls scored/hit the target 19 shots. Girls scored 42.2 per cent of their shots
Girls Mean: (Number of shots scored/fx) 19 divided by (number of people taken test) 15 = 1.26 Girls Median: put in order and find middle. 1 Girls Range: (highest number minus lowest) = 3-0= 3 Girls Mode: (most) 1 Analysis Girls did way better than I expected. They analysed the problem and took inferences from their previous shots. These inferences helped them score the next shot. I also noticed that girls took their time more as well as hit the ball softer. Maybe this is because they listened to the instructions when I said that this was an accuracy test not power.

Comparing Data
Shots scored by Boys Girls 0 3 3 1 9 7 2 8 3

Above is a frequency chart comparing both sets of data

So who is more accuracy? In theory girls in year 8 have better accuracy as they hit the target 42.2 per cent of the time while the boys in year 8 hit the target 41.6 per cent but I dont think that theres enough difference to decide between these 2 groups. Maybe 2 people on the girls side hit the target because of luck and maybe someone was just goofing around. This was just a small sample for year 8 and if we want a definitive answer we will have to do a census. Right now I think that boys and girls in year 8 have approximately same amount of accuracy.

Comparison between boys and girls accuracy

Boys

Girls

1 Number of shots scored

The chart above will not make sense because there are a different number of boys and girls taking this test. But you can clearly see that if there were 5 more girls the results would probably the probably be the same. (0)There are the same amount of people shot 0 out of 3 in the Boys and Girls. (1) There were more boys who scored 1 out of 3 shots in than girls but this would probably be evened out if there were the same amount of boys and girls in our sample. I am almost sure of this because the girls mode and median were 1. (2) There were way more boys who scored 2 out of 3 than girls but the full score marked helped everything even out. This is because there were zero boys who scored a full mark while 2 girls did.

Comparing/Summary
Comments on Graphs: I think that this type of graph I used (column bar graph) was the most appropriate graph, since line graph wouldnt work because it is not comparing the change that occurs and because as you can see in the actual graph. I did not use a 3d graph because you would not be able to difference and they are unclear

Evaluation on Hypothesis: My hypothesis was proved wrong because boys and girls had the same score in year 8. This surprised me a little because I thought boys play regularly and would be more accurate. To be more accurate next time I could make a bigger sample or conduct a census. Also I could do all the testing at the same time because every class I had to set the test up. This might have given me some inaccurate results.
