Lesson Plan: Day 3

Name: Jessica Dietz Lesson Title: Improvisation for Jazz Grade level(s)/Course: Grades 9-12/Jazz Band 1 Content Standards: Nafme Music Education Standards: 2. Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music. 3. Improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments. 5. Reading and notating music. 6. Listening to, analyzing, and describing music. 7. Evaluating music and music performances. 8. Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts. 9. Understanding music in relation to history and culture. Enduring Understanding and/or Essential Question: Freedom is the cornerstone of jazz. (EU) What is jazz? (EQ) Jazz musics character comes from the way in which one plays. (EU) How do musical techniques influence the feeling of the music? (EQ)

Instructional Objectives: The student will be able to improvise a melody over the band during a solo section with less than two errors. Procedures 1. Warm-up: (10 minutes): Sing and play back what I play to develop eartraining 2. Instruction (30 minutes): The band will play Example Melody 1 twice through. After the second time through, the rhythm section will continue playing as normal and the rest of the band, one at a time, will improvise during this solo break. 3. Self-evaluation/remediation (10 minutes): Students will receive a selfevaluation form and will evaluate their own improvised solo.

Lesson Plan: Day 3

Differentiation This lessons information is a continuation of the previous two days. Students who do not pass the playing portion will receive feedback from me during the selfevaluation portion of the class. Closure Closure to the lesson will be for students to reflect upon their solos. Every student will receive a form with specific information to think about and analyze his or her solo. Classroom Management/Democratic Practices Students will be almost constantly playing or singing during the rehearsal. This should help prevent any issues with students talking or playing out of turn. ASSESSMENT Before the lesson Students will be assessed before the lesson by playing back what I play. This assessment addresses ear-training that has been a focus of this unit and previous units. During the lesson Students will be assessed during the lesson through playing solos for me and their fellow students. Feedback will be given by me. At the end of the lesson At the end of the lesson, students will be reflecting on their own performance as a self-assessment.
