N TECHNOLOGY III SEMESTER: 01/2013 TUTORIAL ASSIGNMENT

NAME: SOO YEW HANG ID NO: 12UEB01336 SESSION: JAN 2012 (DESIGN STUDIO 3) DATE: 19 FEBRUARY 2013

Introduction
The site that we accessed is Crest Jalan Sultan Ismail. The site is a high-end mixed development that consists of a 26-story corporate tower, 44-story residential tower and a 6-storey podium for retail and car park. The site is located at Jalan Sultan Ismail, Kuala Lumpur. The site scheduled to be completed in 2010 but the construction had been temporary suspended for years due to technical problem and being continued the construction afterwards. Therefore, the main concern during the recent construction phase is to evaluate the possible construction method on existing structure, and manage the construction speed to catch up the schedule of completing construction.

Observation
Based on the observation, the buildings on site are approximate 70% completed. The structures had completely constructed and the walls were partitioned. The remaining works include ground paving, finishing, wiring, painting and installation of plants and equipment. The construction of building fulfilled the requirements of government rules and regulation. The planter boxes construct with at least 1.5m depth which meet the requirement of Uniform Building by Law (UBBL). The swimming pool embraced with more beams to bear the load which also a qualification of constructing a pool on high rise building. The installation of construction elevator is under monitor of specialist.

Discussion
1. Is it a Sustainable Construction adhering to the industry practice, proposals to overcome the current weaknesses? According to UK strategy for more sustainable construction, some key themes had been suggested which included eliminated pollution; minimize energy of construction and use, design for minimum waste, respect to environment and people, and others. Somewhere the construction works on site shows inadequate of fulfilling the key themes of sustainable construction. The site shows deficiency of respect to people and local environment. The labors should be required to equip better safety equipment such as high performance safety shoes, safety harness and others. The management should provide safer working environment for workers and visitor. The scaffolds for construction should be access by relevant units to determine its safety, and the perforations on buildings should be fenced or wrapped to avoid the happening of accident. As for the environment, the management should responsible to minimize the generating of construction waste and educate or advices the labors not to cast aside their daily waste around the site. Some worries might be appeared which will generate obsession for the occupants of adjacent buildings. Buildings on same site had been completed earlier and being occupy by residents. Therefore, the occupants there might face the problems of air pollution and noise pollution. The ash that produced during the construction might cause healthy issues for them, and the noise will annoy them for daily activities. As suggestion, the developer should plan both the constructions on same phase to avoid those situations happen.

2.

From your observation highlight the existing construction method, the strength and weakness and the possible alternatives if any.

The buildings in site are conventional reinforce concrete structure .They are using the cast in-situ as method to construct the structures. The structure frames were constructed by using frameworks and pouring the reinforce concrete. This method is common in Malaysia. The strengths of this method are as below:

i. ii. iii.

Cost Saving Versatile and Adaptable Works Intensive Works

In addition, the weaknesses of cast in-situ include: i. ii. iii. Longer Construction Period Generate Construction Wastes Difficulty on Quality Control

To overcome the weakness of cast on site, some recommend using prefabricated framework to alternate typical timber frameworks, and strictly required on constructing the structure to control the quality of building, and also to minimize the waste generated. In addition, there been some alternatives to replace the cast on site method which is prefabricated method. By using this method, the structural members such as beam, column or bearing wall are being manufactured in factory and ready to use on site. This method can speed up the construction, and minimize the waste generated by frameworks. Besides that, prestressed structure also introduced as the alternate construction method. In prestressed concrete structures, compressive stresses in the concrete and tensile stresses in the reinforcement are usually induced. The use of high-strength steel permits significant savings in the required amount of reinforced steel cable, wire, or deformed bars. Prestressed structures are highly resistant to cracking. Prestressed concrete structures are most efficient for buildings structures where the spans, loads, or working conditions are such that the use of structures with unstressed reinforcement involves significant technical difficulties or large outlays of concrete and steel.

Conclusion
As conclusion, a proper planning on construction will make the construction progress on schedule and minimize the defects that common found on local construction works. The construction method should follow the measurement of key performance indicator (KPI) to achieve sustainable construction.
