Data-Driven Reports to Inform Instruction

ST MATH AND RTI

EVIDENCE-BASED INTERVENTIONS THAT IMPROVE RESULTS

The RTI reports are available at the student, class and school level, and help teachers identify student deficiencies in mastering standards and implement timely interventions.

In the ST Math: K-5 game Tug Boat, students encounter a visual puzzle where they must rearrange the boats so that the bridge will open. This game teaches addition, subtraction and the concept of equal amounts.

WHAT IS SPATIAL TEMPORAL (ST) REASONING?

Born out of neuroscience research at the University of California, Irvine, MINDs unique approach accesses the brains innate spatial-temporal reasoning ability. This ability, which lies at the core of innovative thinking and sophisticated problem-solving, allows the brain to hold visual, mental representations in short-term memory and to evolve them in both space and time, thinking multiple steps ahead. MINDs approach consists of language-independent, animated representations of math concepts delivered via computer software games.

The game Bird Expressions in ST Math: Fluency introduces students to addition and subtraction up to 10. Students encountering this puzzle have mastered the visual representation of the mathematics, and are now encountering the overlay of numbers and symbols onto the math.

JiJi is the penguin featured in the ST Math software games. Not only does the computer-animated JiJi motivate and engage children in solving the mathematics in the games, JiJi offers teachers powerful ways to connect math concepts to classroom instruction.

We went shopping for an intervention for a sub-population of our kids who struggle with math, but we now recognize its for everyone.

MIND Research Institutes visually-based Spatial-Temporal (ST) Math instructional software programs provide an effective, research-based approach for both prevention (Tier 1) and intervention (Tiers 2 and 3). Blending individualized, 1:1 student learning in the uniquely accessible digital content with conventional teacher-facilitated classroom instruction, ST Math engages students at any level of math or language proficiency into a progression of math understanding.

PROGRAM FEATURES
Self-placed:
The ST Math software starts every student with success, and quickly brings them to their personal placement where deep thinking and learning is required.

ST MATH PROGRAMS

TIER 1
Paired with traditional instruction, the use of ST Math has been proven as a highly effective prevention program addressing the general population of students. Early implementation greatly reduces the incidence of students being placed in Tier 2. The self-paced games allow students at any academic level to engage with the content and experience immediate success, encouraging positive behavior.

TIER 2
For students who did not use ST Math in Tier 1, the program can be introduced at Tier 2 and is especially effective in unlocking unrealized learning potential. In addition to helping general students who are not performing at their academic potential, the program supports students who have difficulty with language, or who have mild autism, dyslexia or other special needs. The builtin reports allow teachers to identify student deficiencies to address through intervention.

TIER 3

Research-Based:
The softwares design incorporates the latest scientifically-based research in cognitive learning, game-based learning and motivation to keep even low-confidence students engaged and productively challenged. The positive impact of ST Math on student math achievement has been extensively shown through a large-scale randomized control trial and multiple quasi-experimental studies.

Tailored Instruction:
Based on the information in the reports, teachers can assign specific learning objectives for students who need additional help in an identified area.

grade-leveled instructional software is designed to help all students reach math proficiency through self-paced, languageindependent, mastery based objectives.

ST Math: K-5

Instructive Feedback:
For every visual puzzle solution posed by the student, the software animates the visual representations of math to provide instructive feedback. Whether or not the solution chosen by the student works or does not work, animation shows why it was correct or incorrect and provides informative feedback to students.

Self-paced:
Students progress through the softwares gently scaffolded games at their own pace, advancing to the next challenging level only through mastering the previous level.

Built-in Reports:
Teachers, math coaches or other specialized education professionals can access student progress data in real-time. A built-in RTI report viewed daily or weekly shows both class and student-level data, indicating level of math standards mastery and RTI growth.

is designed for struggling middle and high school students performing well below grade level. Diagnostic assessments prescribe an appropriate learning path for each student. Self-paced and languageindependent, the Secondary Intervention software provides instruction on math standards prerequisite to mastering middle school math and algebra.

ST Math: Secondary Intervention

Students who have significant gaps in their mathematical knowledge and problemsolving skills will benefit from the use of ST Math: Secondary Intervention. The material can be covered in a variety of class models including additional math classes, extended class periods or additional targeted intervention time. The instructional approach offers students the motivation to correct prior misconceptions and construct a solid mathematical foundation.

In highly individualized settings this intense, explicit instruction provides content tailored for the individual student. As instructors analyze reports they can easily identify student deficiencies by areas of mastery and implement timely interventions. The engagement factor of ST Math is particularly useful in Tier 3 where there is a need for increased focus, and frequency and duration of intervention.

Group Instruction:
By incorporating the softwares animated visual representations of math in regular classroom or group instruction, teachers can help students make the connections between what they have learned during their 1:1 ST Math time with the language and symbols they encounter in traditional classroom materials.

is designed to help grade school students build fluency with addition and multiplication math facts, building speed and accuracy with understanding.

ST Math: Fluency

Evidence suggests that developing rapid and accurate responses to basic math facts, including single-digit addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, may prevent and remedy learning problems. (Skiba, Magneusson, Mastron & Erickson, 1986). The terms fluency and automaticity describe this level of skill development. In ST Math, the proven use of animated virtual manipulatives enable students to not just memorize but also prove basic math facts. The state-of-the-art adaptivity makes basic math fact recall effortless and frees students working memory for problem-solving. The self-paced games allow students at any academic level to engage with the content, making it appropriate for use at all stages of RtI.
