Course Learning Outcomes: 1. Compare features of language and communication. 2. Explain how sounds are produced in the English sound system. 3. Produce accurate English sounds in discourse. 4. Analyse the different types of morphemes and word formation processes. 5. Analyse sentences in relation to their word-order and the groups of words they contain. 6. Transfer knowledge of semantics and pragmatics in different contexts. 7. Assess own language progress through reflections/journals. (This coursework addresses Learning Outcomes 3 and 1 or 2 or 4 or 5) Specific Learning Outcomes: The objectives of this assignment are to enable students to: :1. write a critical essay on any one of the four topics given (language and communication, phonology, morphology and syntax); 2. read aloud part of the essay written using accurate English sounds; and 3. critique each others reading. The Project (Weighting = 50%) This assignment consists of TWO tasks, namely, essay writing and reading aloud .

Detailed Description of Tasks: Task 1: Essay Writing (50%) (Individual task) Choose only ONE question from any of the topics given below and write an essay of about 800 words. Topic 1: Language and Communication 1. Humans use language for purposes different from animal communication systems or the human-like languages some animals have been taught. Discuss and provide relevant evidence to justify your arguments. 2. Non-verbal communication tends to provide the context of verbal communication and has the power to disambiguate or invalidate the content of linguistic expressions (Krippendorft). Discuss and provide relevant evidence to justify your arguments. Topic 2: Introduction to Phonology 1. Phonological knowledge permits a speaker to produce sounds that form meaningful utterances. Why is this knowledge important? Discuss and justify your answer. 2. Non-native speakers of English (NNS) often have problems with pronunciation. Discuss the problem areas and suggest ways to overcome these problems. Provide relevant examples to illustrate your answer. Topic 3: Morphology 1. Many words are formed from combinations of other words, or from combinations of words and prefixes or suffixes. It is often possible to see a connection between the meaning of a combination and the meanings of its parts. Discuss some of the common processes of word formation in English. Elaborate with examples. 2. The knowledge of morphology can contribute to our understanding of English vocabulary and grammar better and help us in our future role as an English teacher.

Discuss the statement above. Provide examples to support your answer Topic 4: Syntax 1. Discuss the rules of Syntax and generate five well-formed sentences. Are there sentences that can be generated from these rules that are illformed (some rule of English grammar is broken)? Provide examples to illustrate your discussion. 2. An English language teacher should have a very sound knowledge of grammar to enable him/her to become an effective English teacher. Discuss and provide examples to support your discussion. Task 2: Reading Aloud (40%) (Individual and Pair work) Read any section of the essay you have written in Task 1. Record your reading. Your recording should not exceed 10 minutes. You are required to use accurate English sounds in your reading. Exchange your taped recording with a friend, and comment on each others reading. Your written comment should focus on the accuracy of sounds and stress made. Keep your CD and the written comments in your folio.
