DISCUSSION Consider a tank where a Newtonian fluid of density p , and viscosity p. is agitated by an impeller (agitator) of diameter Da and rotating at rotational speed a>. Let the tank diameter be D , the impeller width W and the liquid depth H. The power requirement of the impeller P represents the rate of energy dissipation within the liquid and depends on the following variables:
P = (p,p,<a,g,Da,D,W,H) (1)

It is not possible to obtain the functional relationship in equation (1) because of the complex geometry of the vessel, impeller and other inserts such as heating coils. Using dimensional analysis, the number of variables describing the problem can be minimized and equation (1) reduces to:

Power consumption is related to fluid density, fluid viscosity, rotational speed and impeller diameter. According to the apparatus used in this experiment power can be calculated by
r = F*r

(3)

where T is torque (in N m), r is distance of the torque arm ( r - 0.11 m), and F (in N) is the force given by F - (balance reading 9.81) And power is found as
P T * CO

(4)

(5)

Here P is the power (in W) and co is the angular speed (in rad/s). PROCEDURE 6. Fill the mixing tank with water up to 0.3 m. 7. Attach the flat paddle impeller with the base of bush level with the end of the shaft.

8. Release the torque adjustment clamp, and allow the dynamometer to move freely. 9. Set the dynamometer to a neutral position by using the setting bar and adjustment for the tension spring. 10. Increase the speed control knob in gradual increments and record the speed on the speed indicator and the force on the balance at each speed of the mixer. 11. Repeat the procedure with the turbine impeller and other flat bladed paddles and again with the four baffles in position with each impeller. OBSERVATIONS AND RESULTS 1. Tabulate the readings of angular speed u> and balance reading for the flat paddle and turbine impellers, and screw propeller in Tables 1, 2, and 3, respectively. 2. Calculate the power P consumption at different angular speeds co (rad/s) for the flat paddle and turbine impellers, and screw propeller in Tables 4, 5, and 6, respectively. 3. Plot the power consumption P (W) against the angular speed oo (rad/s) for the flat paddle and turbine impellers, and screw propeller and discuss the shape of the plotted curves. 4. Plot P (W) against w (rad/s) for the flat paddle impeller with and without baffle inclusion, and discuss the shape of the plotted curves Table 1.
