Dissertation Title and Description The Role of Inflammation in Leukemogenesis: Identifying Targets for Novel Therapeutic Strategies Many studies have shown that inflammation leads to cell death in normal tissues. There is mounting evidence in most mammalian tissues that suggests inflammation promotes cancer formation. Our studies focus on differences between normal blood stem cells and leukemia stem cells. We have shown that a critical difference between leukemia stem cells and normal blood stem cells is in their response to inflammation. Characterizing this difference has led us to the discovery of novel anti-leukemia therapeutic strategies that are able to specifically target leukemia stem cells while simultaneously protecting normal blood stem cells.
