ELACC1RL7 Integration of Knowledge and Ideas : Use illustrations and and Ideas : Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events. ELACC1RI1 Key Ideas and Details Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
Understandings: The students will be able to describe the characters and setting of The Mitten to help understand the story. The students will be able to understand the story when they ask questions about the specific details. The students will see how a fictional story can be funny and bring enjoyment to reading.

Stage 3: Plan Learning Experiences


Students will first discuss the cover of the book going over the author and discussing whether the book is fiction or non-fiction. The teacher will then read the story aloud to the students stopping to discuss the details of each page. The students will be inferring about the next page and what may happen. The students will also sequence the order of events in the story as it is read aloud. After the story is read the teacher will introduce a song called The Mitten. This song helps the students to also sequence the events of the key details in the story. It has a catchy tune that the students will enjoy. They will feel as though they are in charge of the lesson. After the song the students will view the weebly site with all of its components on Jan Brett. They will see many forms of technology including the voki, the images from the internet, and other internet sites. The students will then complete their own illustrations of a pair of mittens. Afterwards, the students will write a sentence describing their mittens. The teacher will make a class book out of their assignment.

Assessment: The students will be assessed on their responses to the teacher during the reading of their story. The students will be assessed on their participation and completion of their own mittens with the describing sentences.
