Part, Base and Rate. These are the three components of a percent problem Base: the whole or total. Rate: a number followed by percent (%). Part: result of multiplying the base and the rate. Formula P= Part Example 1 A shop gives a 10% discount on all shoes. Find the discount on a RM175 shoes? 0.1 x RM175 = RM17.50 discount Example 2 If the sales tax rate is 4%, find amount of sales when the sales tax is RM18.
B= 18 = RM 450 sales 0.04

B x Base

R Rate

Example 3 Production rose from 3820 units to 5157 units. Find the percent of increase. 5157 3820 = 1337 change
R= 1337 = 0.35 = 35% 3820

Example 4 This years sales are RM121,000 which is 10% more than last years sales. Find last years sales. Original + increase = New value 100% + 10% = 110%
B= RM 121,000 RM 121,000 = = RM 110,000 110% 1.1

Example 5 After a deduction of 10% from the price, a customer paid RM135. Find the original price. Original Decrease = New value 100% - 10% = 90%
B= 135 = RM 150 0.9
