MAY 2013
The April issue of this magazine saw the last of our regular updates from Lanky Hill. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mike Chamberlain for his contribution to the magazine over many years. I have always enjoyed reading the latest news from Lanky Hill and I wish him well. Please see the article from Sarah Renwick on page 31. An event enjoyed by many last year was the Teddy Bear Trail around Gayton. Sarah Renwick is organising one again this year. Let's see even more gardens full of teddys this year. See page 21 for further details, including how to get your teddy on the map. There are also events to raise much needed funds for the ALB (p9) and Gayton (p27) Village Halls. We are lucky to have our Village Halls, including East Winch. They are run by volunteers and are used by all of us from pre-school groups to exercise classes. Why not drop into one of the events and help support these valuable local resources. Don't forget to let me know of any news or events that are happening in our villages. My contact details are below. Best wishes, Catriona Copy in by 18th May, please. Delivery date is 31st May.

Christian Aid Week 13 to 19 May 2013
th th
Dear Friends
A strong Christian ethos is to think of others and not of ourselves. Or, put another way, Jesus emphasised the two most important 'commandments' are to love God and love your neighbour as yourself. Christian Aid is the official international relief and development agency covering 41 church denominations in the UK and Ireland. For 68 years it has been empowering people in poor countries around the world to find their own solutions to the challenges they face. But they can't do that without our help. Each year, Christian Aid Week brings churches together in an act of witness, love and solidarity that is changing the lives of thousands in need. Did you know for instance that tonight 1 in 8 people around the world will go to bed hungry? This is a scandal not only to our political and social structures, but a challenge to the heart of what we believe God has called us to do and to be. Christianity is about self-giving love, helping to serve justice and build community. We are called to walk humbly with God, and from that place discover what it means to be 'Good News'. Christians Aid believes that hunger can, and will, be defeated. During Christian Aid week we will be praying for our neighbours around the world, for an end to their hunger. Prayer is good, but it's not enough. Prayer should lead us also to action. Can I encourage you, this month, to give a little thought to those who are not as fortunate as you. Collection envelopes for Christian Aid will be available through our churches and in some of our village shops, you may even discover one dropped through your door. Please don't ignore them but take a moment to think - can I give a little help? You could change a life! Filled envelopes can be returned to any of our churches. Let's see if we, as a community, can take a bite back at hunger. Much love Rev'd Jane

We have had a busy half term educating our children in road safety. Our Year 1 children recently took part in Step on It training run by some of our trained staff. The children went out into the school car park and along East Winch Road to learn about moving safely around cars, where to cross safely and actually practised crossing the road. All of the children in our school have now received this invaluable training. Our older junior children have also been out and about learning about On Road Cycling led by Tracey Lingfield (County Road Safety Team). Leziate Lakeview Park kindly let us use their car park and junction on to Brow of the Hill Road to practise safe starts and stops, signalling and turns. The children will be tested once they have completed their training. On the subject of road safety, we have a 40 mph speed limit outside our school along East Winch Road, which we consider to be far too fast and dangerous. We continue to campaign for reducing the speed limit to 20mph. If you would like to support us in our campaign, then please contact the school on 01553 630352.

these up to a certain value. Sibelco have agreed to dispose of the rubbish, once collected. There was some disappointment expressed when it was reported that Cllr Smith attended a meeting at the Police HQ in Wymondham and there was no allocation of funds, at the moment, for Homewatch. The Parish Council felt that this should be supported as it is an integral part of Police work. Cllr Bramwell gave a resum on the progress of the Planning Inquiry into the incinerator. It seems that the programme is slipping and it will probably go on longer than originally planned. Cllr Beales also reported that the Borough Council has agreed to extend the budget for the inquiry. The AGM of the Parish Council will be held on 8th May 2013 at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. All Parishioners are welcome and there is a 10 minute open forum where any queries or comments can be made.

Gayton SNAP
16th May, 7pm Gayton Primary School Come and find out what SNAPs, or Safer Neighbourhood Action Panels, are all about. This is a public meeting so all are welcome. It is held by the Police, Borough Council and West Norfolk Partnership. They want to find out the issues and concerns of the local community. If you have an issue that you wish to put to the panel, come and have your say at the meeting.
Grimston Road as there is not enough room for a pair on the verges here. The applications for funding must be in by 30th April, so the Council will formally decide on the quotation for the manufacturer and installation of the gates it will accept at the May or June meeting once it has been informed whether it will receive funding. Leased land The Clerk reported that, following further discussions with NPS regarding the surrender of the lease, a fence must be erected between the owned and leased land before the surrender can take place. It was acknowledged that the responsibility for this lies with the Jubilee Hall Management Committee who owns the land adjacent to the leased land. Mr Beales reported that he knew of a possible new tenant for the owned land who would be willing to install a fence as part of the tenancy. Speedwatch It was noted that nearly 6 months have passed since it was agreed to resurrect the Parish Speedwatch team. The Chairman is still waiting for confirmation that he can vet forms and Mr Grant has only just received a list of names of new volunteers to join the scheme. It is hoped that the team will be up and running soon. For the full minutes of the meeting, visit www.gaytonnews.co.uk. The next meeting is planned to be on 13th May at 7.30pm. This will be preceded by the Annual Parish Meeting starting at 7pm.

Well, the cold weather certainly seems to have gone on and on a bit this year, which reflected on the numbers attending our April meeting. Now the sun is shining and the weather improving, we hope that all members will be fit and well and look forward to seeing them at our next meeting. For those of us who were able to attend, it was a very enjoyable evening. We had lots of new events to discuss (so watch this magazine and village posters for details) together with ideas for our next year's calendar. Our speaker this month was a lady from the Samaritans. She gave us a very detailed talk on the inception of the charity, the very varied and sometimes very difficult problems the 'Sams' deal with and the recruitment and training of their volunteers. No one, and no problem, is ever too much. We had our raffle and competition, which this month, was 'A Happy Poem'. Tea and home-made biscuits followed. Our next meeting is on the 7th May, at 7.30pm in the Jubilee Hall. Our competition will be to see who can bring as many new pennies with different dates on them as possible. I expect there will be a lot of piggy bank raiding going on for this one! Kay Shambrook

Non members welcome for a fee of 2. March Meeting On 20th March forty plus members met at the Carpenters Arms, East Winch for Lunch. A meal of ham egg and chips followed by apple crumble and custard, was heartily enjoyed amongst jolly good company. No matter where we are there is always a raffle and this was no exception. We also played the football tote, winners of five pounds each were Jane Scudamore and Sandra Pepperell, rounding off our lunchtime capers. April Meeting Wednesday 17th April found Evergreen members on a coach bound for Boston in Lincolnshire, where it was market day. As the coach travelled along the A17 the sight of thousands of beautiful golden daffodils adorning the fields really did make it look as though spring had finally sprung. We arrived about 10.30am and went about our own way. Some chose to visit the beautiful St Botolph's Parish Church (known as the Boston Stump), where they serve morning coffee and cakes. We met up again at 2.30pm to head off to the Bay Tree garden centre. On arrival the raffle was drawn. We spent the rest of the afternoon looking at tempting things for the summer garden. I think it is fair to say some were tempted a little too much. I hope the summer blooms reward them. Upcoming meetings 17th May, 2.30pm, Gayton Jubilee Hall. We will once again welcome Jenny Sparks, who has visited us before giving a talk on her Dexter Cows. This time she will talk about her experiences with sheep. We know that it will be a jolly meeting rounded off with afternoon tea. 22nd June, we meet in the Gayton Jubilee Hall for a Strawberry Tea priced at 2.50. For information please ring Kath: 636178

Incinerator update
As Henry Bellingham MP gave evidence to the inquiry he raised many issues including the County Council's 'last minute switch' to the 46million more expensive Cory Wheelabrator bid. The Planning Inspector is expected to send her recommendation to the Secretary of State for Communities & Local Gov Eric Pickles around July 2013. In the meantime, instead of crossing our fingers and hoping for the best, we all have the opportunity to take control of our own destiny. If the 2nd May 2013 election shows a decisive swing in favour of reforming Norfolk County Council, the impact could be dramatic. If you share the view, that the incinerator must not be forced on people, it is necessary to vote and above all do so wisely. Most, if not all, candidates declared their apparent opposition to the incinerator. However, out of 14 West Norfolk County Councillors only 3 distinguished themselves by standing up for us. The inquiry has taken longer and cost more than expected. This favours Cory Wheelabrator because NCC agreed to pay their legal fees with our money. For KLWIN it is a real challenge to meet the ongoing cost, which is why our fundraising events are so necessary. Please come to as many as you can. 10th May, 7:30pm The Jeremy Irons - Candid Brady Film 'Trashed' will now be shown at King's Lynn Arts Centre, 29 King's Street. www.gayton.norfolk.sch.uk You may have heard in the news that all schools will be receiving extra funding for Sport in School. I thought I would let you know some of the ways we will be spending ours to ensure that every child in our school has access to high quality sport!
Equipment Over the past year as a school we have spent several thousands of pounds on sports equipment: rugby and netball to hockey, athletics and rounders. When I arrived at the school in January 2012 there was very little for our Key Stage 2 children. Our intention is to use some of this money to ensure that we continue to have the equipment we need so that all our children can participate in a full range of sports.
Curriculum enrichment is a priority at Gayton Primary School. The children have weekly music lessons from specialist music teachers. We have had dance and drama lessons and workshops. The children have also worked with local artists on whole school projects. We have an excellent range of clubs both after school and at lunchtime. Our aim is to ensure we use it to give all of our children a range of sporting experiences and opportunities. Gymnastics at Lynn Sport Next year our 4 youngest classes will have 10 gym sessions making use of this excellent facility TOP Coaching Our 2 oldest classes will have weekly afternoon sports sessions run by TOP COACHING. Stuart and his team have always run very popular after school clubs and now they will be working with classes every week. Cluster Sports Events As a growing Primary we like to be able to take teams to all of the cluster sports festivals and events. The cost of the coaches to transport the children is high and the funding will help with this.
