Huddersfield Jazz Guitar Society

Newsletter No. 21 May 2013

Hi Jazz Guitar Fans, It was a good turnout, despite being another bitterly cold, late winters night. As is becoming the norm, Tom Prior started the evenings performances, with a solo rendition of My Funny Valentine. Tom never ceases to surprise and while he is known to be a fine Djangoesque swing player this performance also demonstrated both his sensitive side and a penchant for mischievous fun. His fingerstyle chops were also very impressive, (as was the colour of his new guitar!!)

Tom was then joined by Martin Chung for a tidy and well busked reading of the swing classic Sweet Georgia Brown. Martin too is becoming more eclectic, combining bends, blues licks and a Django-like vibrato and all on a guitar that looks like a space-ship. Darren and Richard followed, beautifully supported by Phil Kampen on bass. Darren graciously turned over most of the spot for a feature for Richard whose solid, if a little timid, playing is steadily improving over the months. Polka Dots and Moonbeams followed with a nice referential improvisation from Darren and intelligent chord work from Richard.

Dave Vanfgelderen and Chris Brown followed this with an unusually bright tempo version of Misty. Lovely tone from Daves Guild and really tasteful note choice for his solo.

Nice to see Chris going for it with a powerful solo, full of confidence and commitment. Dave then again took the head for East of the Sun. This duo goes from strength to strength but it would be nice to hear Chris take some of the heads form time to time. Robin Thomas was up next with yet another relatively up-tempo reading of a ballad: The Nearness of You. This was a beautifully managed managed solo performance, with a straight proper guitar sound. Robin had obviously decided against being Bill Frizell again this month!

Joined by Charles on electric bass, Robin chose to play St. Thomas, beginning in free tempo with a semi-improvised segment recalling Guffrie and Halls Newport 58 version Train and the River. Later in the performance the ambience was further enhanced by Errol Garner/Keith Garret styled grunts from both musicians! Ian then gave a short talk on the months set tune: The Odd Couple. However chatter ensued and nobody seemed to be listening. It is proving difficult to move the members nights on to being something a little more purposeful that will enhance both the understanding and playing accomplishments of those with a genuine desire to improve and learn more. The committee has tried various things, from set works, to seminars, guest talks/workshops and quizzes. Most of these have been received with apparent apathy. The committee are concerned about the lack of inertia and about the future growth and way forward for HJGS. Perhaps they have got it wrong and members DO simply require a platform to play and little else. If this is so maybe it is time to change the committee or those of its members most disappointed by the lack of progress? YOUR FEEDBACK please!!! This is part of the problem. We never seem to get any!! Anyway, rant over and back to the last meeting. The second set was opened by the Jazz Dawgs, with Phil Kampen. The blues, Tenor Madness, effectively
3

utilised alternate blues changes, every other chorus (Blues for Alice with the Coltrane I-VI-II-V turnaround) with some nice exchanges in the 4s. This was followed by Ellingtons Cottontail with Adrian playing the tricky head and demonstrating his love for, and absorption of, the bebop idiom. Ian demonstrating the effectiveness of a simple four to the bar on his beautiful, and recently acquired, Benedetto Benny. Adrian and Ian turnout every month, gigs permitting, but it is a real treat when they are joined by Pete Wraith, a master of the lost art of acoustic rhythm guitar! His ebullient personality also brings sunshine to the proceedings. Jez and Martin followed with Straasburg and Wave. Two great players were initially thwarted by serious intonation problems demonstrating just how unforgiving the instrument can be.

Nevertheless, some wonderful playing with fabulous side slips from Jez and some great Bensonish chops from Martin ensued and they had tamed the tuning for their fusionish reading of Jobims Wave. Relative newcomer Adam Hinchliffe and Darren brought the evening to a close with My Funny Valentine, Adam taking the head and first solo, followed by an earthy version of the Herbie Hancock classic Watermelon Man. Darren cut loose on the latter with a soulful groove right down to the toppy, choppy, James Brownish rhythm guitar accompaniments. A great upbeat finish to another successful HJGS meeting.

Members News HJGS member, Adrian Ingram, has convinced Brian Jackson (bassist and organiser of Monday nights at the Head of Steam) to host occasional JAZZ GUITAR NIGHTS. The first one is on Mon. 3rd June and features: CHRIS WALKER, PAUL HARTLEY and ADRIAN INGRAM.

Chris is a fabulous player from Sheffield and one of Adrians ex students at Leeds College of Music. He has done much for jazz guitar in his home town of Sheffield, especially hosting nights at the Lescar. He is also a fine teacher whore students include Jamie Taylor. Paul is a subtle and tasty player in the melodic Jim Hall style. He too has done much for jazz guitar in and around Manchester, particularly his Tuesday nights at the Bakers Vaults in Stockport. It is hoped that HJGS members will do their best to support this, hopefully the first of many guitar nights spotlighting great players deserving wider recognition. Call for Membership Participation
Remember the HJGS exists for the benefit(s) of its members, so we need to hear from YOU: good, bad, indifferent, news, views, gossip, ideas, viewpoints, gigs, sales wants, swaps etc, etc! Please keep us informed of any jazz guitar related gigs, events, sales or other item of interest, so that we can pass information on to other members. HJGS needs to develop its wider network as an important forum for jazz guitar related information and information exchange, so that we may all benefit from the collective wisdom and uncoordinated information that undoubtedly exists amongst fans and connoisseurs.

The HJGS Library of II-V-I Patterns We have two examples this month. The first from Darren.
As a jazz guitarist, or any other jazz musician for that matter it is important to have a good understanding of ways to negotiate a ii V I progression. The following solo is based around a ii V I progression in C, however it uses a G diminished half/whole scale over the G7 chord. The G diminished H/W scale consists of the notes G Ab Bb B Db D E F G and highlights the b9th (Ab) the #9th or b3rd (Bb) and the b5th (Db) giving the scale quite a nice bluesy quality. Over Dm7 and Cma7 the solo keeps very much to the C major scale.

And the second from Jamie. For this months Favourite II-V-Is I thought Id share a few spicy chord voicings that I learned from listening to two of my favorite guitar players, Jim Hall and Johnny Smith. The two examples show how these shapes function as altered dominant 7th voicings and are applied to adjacent string sets in II-V-I situations. Note that these shapes are symmetrical too, so you can shift them up in minor 3rds across the guitar neck. Listen to the opening chord lick on Johnny Smiths Stranger in Paradise' to hear these in action!

The Colonel & The Governor.

Tommy Emmanuel and Martin Taylor

The Colonel and the Governor is the new album of duets by guitarists Martin Taylor and Tommy Emmanuel. Both very highly accomplished guitarists in their respective fields, Martin the consummate jazz guitarist, Tommy a finger style acoustic player from the Chet Atkins school of guitar playing. So how would the contrasting styles work together, very well indeed if this album is anything to go by. This kind of album would only really work if the two players found common ground with which to base the project and they seemed to have found it in an obvious love of the duo playing of Carl Kress and Eddie Lang. The album consists of fourteen tracks and is a mixture of standards and a few Taylor originals. It begins, rather frenetically with a version of I Won't Last a Day Without You, a Carpenters classic that along with many other Paul Williams and Roger Nichols songs seems to slip into the jazz repertoire rather well. I must confess that this isn't one of my favorite tracks on the album, while the playing is fine, the intro and vamping interlude seems to be superfluous to the song, if not irrelevant. There is almost an element of 'trying too hard' on

10

this particular track and the beauty of the piece is lost at times by trying to muscle in some fast licks and technique. The album finds it feet on the second track, Jersey Bounce. Some great playing here with both players really complimenting each other. I really like the vocal asides that can be heard within the track. Tommy Emmanuel really shines on this one. Other stand out tracks on the album are Bernie's Tune, Lullaby of Birdland and Heat Wave all of which impart a sense of joy. Secret Love is a Tommy Emmanuel solo that shows us what is possible using natural harmonics to play the melody. The album finishes with I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free, the Billy Taylor piece which found its way in to the popular conscious courtesy of been used as the theme for Film... (You fill in the year) with Barry Norman. So overall a very good album and one that Id recommend to any lovers of guitar not just jazz guitar. The obvious respect for each others playing and the sense of fun is apparent throughout the whole album. What I love about the album the most though is it sounds like two mates who have got together to have a blast through some tunes and they are clearly having a ball doing so and we are privileged to share in the experience through this recording. The fact that its two of the most amazing guitar players around makes it even better.
