Be able to understand how to manipulate trigonometric expressions and apply trigonometric techniques. Trigonometric Expressions and Techniques.

In this assessment you will have opportunities to provide evidence against the following criteria. Indicate the page numbers where the evidence can be found. Criteria Refere nce P7 P8 D1 To achieve the criteria the evidence must show that the student is able to:
Sketch the graph of a sinusoidal trigonometric function and use it to explain and describe amplitude, periodic time and frequency Use two of the compound angle formulae and verify their relationship Using a graphical technique determine the single wave resulting from a combination of two waves of the same frequency and then verify the result using trigonometric formulae

Assignment 3 Trigonometric Expressions and Techniques

Scenario
In your work as a Communications technician, you may have to deal with many different types of calculations that may include manipulating trigonometric expressions and apply trigonometric techniques. As a part of your course you are required to prove your abilities to do such calculations and this could be done through solving the following tasks.

Task 1:

[ Pass P7 ]

An AC voltage v(t) can be described mathematically as a function of time by a sine wave whose angle is composed of two parts : 1. Phase shift angle () whose sine is given by the ratio of the voltage measured at time (t=0), v (0) , to the maximum measured voltage (Vm ) :
v( 0) = sin 1 V m

2. The dynamic angle( ) which varies linearly with time; the constant of proportionality being( ):
= t

Putting things together, the AC voltage equation becomes:

v ( t ) = 240 sin (t + )

By assuming the values given below for set of values) carry out the following:

, and ,

(each group chooses one

1. Sketch the graph of v(t ) against (t ) for one complete cycle; 2. Find the amplitude; 3. Find the periodic time; 4. Find the frequency. Group A B C

Task 2:

[ Pass P8 ]

Group A 1. Given that :

cos( x + y ) = cos x. cos y sin x. sin y

Show that :
cos( x y ) = cos x. cos y + sin x. sin y

2. Use an appropriate compound angle formula to show that:

cos 11 5 11 5 7 . cos + sin . sin = cos 6 4 6 4 12

Group B 1. Given that :

cos( x y ) = cos x. cos y + sin x. sin y

And the fact that:

sin x = cos x 2 cos x = sin x 2 sin ( x + y ) = cos ( x + y ) 2

Show that :
sin ( x + y ) = sin x. cos y + cos x. sin y

2. Use an appropriate compound angle formula to show that:

sin 3 2 3 2 . cos cos . sin = sin 4 3 4 3 12

Task 3:

[ Distinct D1 ]
E1

Two sinusoidal electric fields

E1 = E m sin t

and E 2 are expressed:

and,

E 2 = E m sin ( t + )

What is the net electric field at a point as a single resultant wave ( E1 + E 2 ) ? show your answer in the following two methods: 1. Sketch the graphs of E1 ( t ) as a function of (t ) and of E 2 ( t ) as a function of (t ) , then add the two graphs to get the resultant electric field graph E R ( t ) . 2. Find E R ( t ) by the algebraic sum of E1 ( t ) and E 2 ( t ) , then simplify by using proper trigonometric formulae. Verify the result you have got using the graph sketching employed in method (1) with the algebraic method (2). Grou p A B C
