The Thousand Names of r Rdh


[From the Narada Pancharata, translated by Bhaktivinoda Thakura, translated into English by Kusakratha Prabhu]

Sri Radha Sahasra-nama was originally spoken by Lord Shiva to Parvati devi, recorded in the 5th Chapter of Sri Narada Pancaratra.

Texts 1 and 2 r-prvaty uvca deva-deva jaganntha bhaktnugraha-kraka yady asti mayi kruya mayi yady asti te day yad yat tvay pragadita tat sarva me ruta prabho guhyd guhyatara yat tu yat te manasi kite r Prvat said: O lord of lords, O master of the universe, O master kind to your devotees, if you are kind to me, if you have mercy for me, then, O lord, please tell me all you have heard, the most secret of secrets in your effulgent heart.

Texts 3 and 4 tvay na gadita yat tu yasmai kasmai kadacana tan m kathaya devea sahasra nma cottamam r-rdhy maha-devy gopy bhakti-prasdhanam brahma-kartr hartr s katha goptvam gat O lord of lords, the transcendental thousand names of Goddess r Rdh-gop, which inspire pure devotional service, and which you have never told anyone, please tell to me. Why is the Goddess, who creates and destroys the universes, a gop?

Text 5 r-mahdeva uvca u devi vicitrrth kath ppa-har ubhm nsti janmi karmi tasy nna mahevari Lord iva said: O goddess, O queen, please hear this auspicious and very wonderful truth, which destroys sins: For Her their are neither births nor material activities. Text 6 yad hari caritri kurute krya-gocart tad vidht-rpi hari-snnidhya-sdhin When Lord Hari, out of a sense of duty, performs activities (in the material world), she, desiring to be near Him, assumes many different forms. Text 7 tasy goptva-bhvasya kraa gadita pur idn u devei nmn caiva sahasrakam I have already explained why She is a gop. O goddess, now please hear Her thousand names.

Text 8 yan may kathita naiva tantrev api kadpi na tava sneht pravakymi bhakty dhrya mumukubhi What I have never spoken in the Tantras and what they who yearn for liberation cherish, out of love for you, I will now speak. Text 9 mama pra-sam vidy bhavyate me tv ahar-niam uva girije nitya pahasva ca yath-mati Day and night this knowledge is as dear to me as life. O daughter of the mountain king, please hear and regularly chant (these thousand names) as far as you are able. Text 10 yasy prasdt kas tu golokea para prabhu asy nma-sahasrasya ir nrada eva ca By Her kindness Ka, the master of Goloka, is the Supreme Master. Nrada is the sage of Her thousand holy names. Text 11 dev rdh par prokt catur-varga-prasdhin o sri-rdh rdhik kavallabh ka-samyut Rdh, who grants the four goals of life, is said to be the Supreme Goddess. (Her thousand names follow.) Om. She is Lord Ka's greatest worshiper (r-rdh and rdhik), Lord Ka's beloved (ka-vallabh), and Lord Ka's constant companion (ka-samyut). Text 12 vndvanevar kapriy madana-mohin rmat ka-knt ca knanda-pradyin

She is the queen of Vndvana (vndvanevar), the beloved of Lord Ka (ka-priy), more charming than Kmadeva (madana-mohin), beautiful (rmat), Lord Ka's beloved (ka-knt), and the giver of bliss to Lord Ka (knanda-pradyin). Text 13 yaasvin yaogamy yaodnanana-vallabh dmodara-priy gop gopnanda-kar tath She is famous (yaasvin and yaogamy), the beloved of Yaod's son (yaodnananavallabh), dear to Lord Dmodara (dmodara-priy), a cowherd girl (gop), and the giver of happiness to the gopas (gopnanda-kar). Text 14 kga-vsin hdy hari-knt hari-priy pradhna-gopik gopakany trailokya-sundar Her residence is on Lord Ka's limbs (kga-vsin). She is charming (hdy). She is Lord Hari's beloved (hari-knt and hari-priy), the most important gop (pradhnagopik), the daughter of a gopa (gopa-kany), and the most beautiful girl in the three worlds (trailokya-sundar). Text 15 vndvana-vihr ca vikaita-mukhmbuj gokulnanda-kartr ca gokulnanda-dyin She enjoys pastimes in Vndvana (vndvana-vihr), Her face is a blossoming lotus (vikaita-mukhmbuj), and she brings happiness to Gokula (gokulnanda-kartr and gokulnanda-dyin). Text 16 gati-prad gta-gamy gamangamana-priy viu-priy viu-knt vior aga-nivsin She gives the goal of life (gati-prad), is approached by chanting her holy names (gtagamy), is the beloved of the omniprescent Supreme Personality of Godhead (gamangamana-priy), is Lord Viu's beloved (viu-priy and viu-knt), and resides on Lord Viu's limbs (vior aga-nivsin).

Text 17 yaodnanda-patn ca yaodnanda-gehin kmri-knt kme kma-llasa-vigrah She is the wife of Yaod's son (yaodnanda-patn and yaodnanda-gehin), the beloved of lust's enemy (kmri-knt), Lord Ka's amorous queen (kme), and Lord Ka's passionate lover (kma-llasa-vigrah). Text 18 jaya-prad jay jv jvnanda-pradyin nandanandana-patn ca vabhnu-sut iv She is the giver of victory (jaya-prad) and She is victory itself (jay). She is life (jv), the giver of happiness to the living entities (jvnanda-pradyin), the wife of Nanda's son (nandanandana-patn), King Vabhnu's daughter (vabhnu-sut), and auspicious (iv). Text 19 gadhyak gavdhyak gav gatir anuttam kcanbh hema-gtr kcangada-dhri She is the leader of the gops (gadhyak), the ruler of the cows (gavdhyak and gav gati), and without superior (anuttam). She has a golden complexion (kcanbh), Her limbs are golden (hema-gtr), and She wears golden armlets (kcangada-dhri). Text 20 aok okorahit viok oka-nin gyatr vedamt ca vedtta vid-uttam She never laments (aok, okorahit, and viok), she ends lamentation (oka-nin). She is the Gaytr mantra (gyatr), the mother of the Vedas (veda-mt), beyond the Vedas (vedtta), and the wiseset philosopher (vid-uttam). Text 21 nti-stra-priy ntigatir matir abhad

veda-priy veda-garbh veda-mrga-pravardhin She is an eager student of the scriptures describing ethics (nti-stra-priy). She is the perfect moralist (nti-gati), the most thoughtful philosopher (mati), the fulfiller of desires (abhad), an eager student of the Vedas (veda-priy), the mother of the Vedas (vedagarbh), and the teacher of the Vedas' path (veda-mrga-pravardhin). Text 22 veda-gamy veda-par vicitra-kanakojjval tathojjvala-prad nity tathaivojjvala-gtrik She is approached by Vedic study (veda-gamy). She is the supreme goal described in the Vedas (veda-par). She is splendid with wonderful golden ornaments (vicitrakanakojjval), glorious (ujjvala-prad), and eternal (nity), and Her limbs are filled with glory (ujjvala-gtrik). Text 23 nanda-priy nanda-sutradhynandaprad ubh ubhg vimalg ca vilasiny aparjit She is dear to Mahrja Nanda (nanda-priy), worshiped by Nanda's son (nandasutrdhy), delightful (nanda-prad), beautiful (ubh), with beautiful limbs (ubhg), with splendid limbs (vimalg), playful (vilasin), and unconquerable (aparjit). Text 24 janan janmany ca janma-mtyu-jarpah gatir gatimatm dhtr dhtrnandapradyin She is the mother of all (janan), without birth (janma-ny), the remover of birth, death, and old-age (janma-mtyu-jarpah), the supreme goal of the aspiring devotees (gatir gatimatm), the mother of all (dhtr), and the giver of bliss to the Supreme Creator (dhtrnanda-pradyin). She is dear to the Lord of the universes (jaganntha-priy), She resides on a hill (ailavsin), is beautiful and golden (hema-sundar), is youthful (kior), like a lotus flower (kamal and padm), her hands are lotuses (padma-hast), and She is buxom (payoda-d). Text 26 payasvin payo-dtr pavitr sarva-magal mah-jva-prad kaknt kamala-sundar She is buxom (payasvin and payo-dtr), pure (pavitr), all-auspicious (sarva-magal), the great giver of life (mah-jva-prad), Lord Ka's beloved (ka-knt), and beautiful as a lotus (kamala-sundar). Text 27 vicitra-vsin citravsin citra-rpi nirgu su-kuln ca nikuln nirkul She is wonderfully fragrant (vicitra-vsin and citra-vsin), wonderfully beautiful (citrarpi), free of the modes of material nature (nirgu), born in a pious family (su-kuln), not born in any family of the material world (nikuln), and free from all distrees (nirkul). Text 28 gokulntara-geh ca yognanda-kar tath veu-vdy veu-rati veu-vdya-parya Her home is in Gokula (gokulntara-geh). She delights Lord Ka when She meets Him (yognanda-kar). She plays the flute (veu-vdy), enjoys playing the flute (veu-rati), and is fond of playing the flute (veu-vdya-parya). Text 29 goplasya priy saumyarp saumya-kulodvah mohmoh vimoh ca gati-nih gati-prad She is Lord Gopla's beloved (goplasya priy). She is gentle and noble (saumya-rp), born in an exalted family (saumya-kulodvah), charming (moh and vimoh), and free from bewilderment (amoh), and She gives the goal of life (gati-nih and gati-prad). grba-vandy girb girba-gaa-sevit lalit ca viok ca vikh citra-mlin The demigods offer repsectful obeisances to Her (grba-vandy). She is divine (girb), served by the demigods (girba-gaa-sevit), playful and charming (lalit), free from lamentation (viok), the star Vikh (vikh), and decorated with wonderful garlands (citra-mlin). Text 31 jitendriy uddha-sattv kuln kula-dpik dpa-priy dpa-dtr vimal vimalodak She has conquered Her senses (jitendriy). She is situated in pure goodness (uddhasattv), born in a noble family (kuln), the lamp illuminating Her family (kula-dpik), fond of lamps (dpa-priy), the giver of the lamp (dpa-dtr), pure (vimal), and the sacred river (vimalodak). Text 32 kntra-vsin k kacandra-priy mati anuttar dukha-hantr dukha-kartr kulodvah She lives in a forest (kntra-vsin). She is Lord Ka's beloved (k and kacandrapriy). She is thoughtfulness (mati), unsurpassed (anuttar), the remover of sufferings (dukha-hantr), the creator of sufferings (dukha-kartr), and the noblest in Her family (kulodvah). Text 33 matir lakmr dhtir lajj knti pui smti kam krodayin dev devri-kula-mardin She is thoughtfulness (mati), Goddess Lakm (lakm), perseverance (dhti), modesty (lajj), beauty (knti), fulfillment (pui), memory (smti), patience (kam), she who lies down on the ocean of milk (krodayin), the goddess (dev), and the crusher of Lord Ka's enemies (devri-kula-mardin). Text 34 vaiav ca mah-lakm kula-pjy kula-priy

samhartr sarva-daityn svitr veda-gmin She is Lord Viu's consort (vaiav), Goddess Mah-Lakm (mah-lakm), worshiped by Her family (kula-pjy), dear to Her family (kula-priy), the destroyer of all the demons (samhartr sarva-daityn), the gyatr mantra (svitr), and a follower of the Vedas (veda-gmin). Text 35 vedtt nirlamb nirlamba-gaa-priy nirlamba-janai pjy nirlok nirray She is beyond the Vedas (vedtt), liberated (nirlamb), dear to the liberated (nirlambagaa-priy), worshiped by the liberated (nirlamba-janai pjy), unseen by conditioned souls (nirlok), and independent (nirray). Text 36 ekg sarvag sevy brahma-patn sarasvat rsa-priy rsa-gamy rsdhiht-devat She has one form (ekg). She is all-pervading (sarvag), the supreme object of worship (sevy), Brahm's wife (brahma-patn), Goddess Sarasvat (sarasvat), fond of the rsa dance (rsa-priy), the girl Lord Ka approaches in the rsa dance (rsa-gamy), and the predominating Deity of the rsa dance (rsdhiht-devat). Text 37 rasik rasiknand svayam rsevar par rsa-maala-madhyasth rsa-maala-obhit She enjoys the transcendental mellows (rasik) and tastes the bliss of the transcendental mellows (rasiknand). She is the queen of the rsa dance (svayam rsevar), transcendental (par), the girl who stays in the middle of the rsa dance circle (rsamaala-madhyasth), and the girl who beautifies the rsa dance circle (rsa-maalaobhit). Text 38 rsa-maala-sevy ca rsa-kr manohar puarkka-nilay puarkka-gehin

She is served in the rsa dance circle (rsa-maala-sevy), and She enjoys the pastime of the rsa dance (rsa-kr). She is beautiful (manohar), Her dark eyes are lotus flowers (puarkka-nilay), and She is the wife of lotus-eyed Ka (puarkka-gehin). Text 39 puarkka-sevy ca puarkka-vallabh sarva-jvevar sarvajva-vandy part par She is served by lotus-eyed Ka (puarkka-sevy), dear to lotus-eyed Ka (puarkka-vallabh), the queen of all living entities (sarva-jvevar), worshiped by all living entities (sarva-jva-vandy), and greater than the greatest (part par). Text 40 prakti ambhu-knt ca sadiva-manohar kut pips day nidr bhrnti rnti kamkul She is the goddess of the material nature (prakti), and the beautiful wife of Lord iva (ambhu-knt and sadiva-manohar). She is hunger (kut), thirst (pips), mercy (day), sleep (nidr), bewilderment (bhrnti), exhaustion (rnti), and patience (kamkul). Text 41 vadh-rp gopa-patn bhrat siddha-yogn satya-rp nitya-rp nityg nitya-gehin She is a young girl (vadh-rp), the wife of a gopa (gopa-patn), the goddess of eloquence (bhrat), and perfect in the science of yoga (siddha-yogn). Her form is eternal (satyarp, nitya-rp, and nityg), and She is Lord Ka's wife eternally (nitya-gehin). Text 42 sthna-dtr tath dhtr mah-lakm svayam-prabh sindhu-kany sthna-dtr dvrak-vsin tath She gives Her devotees their homes (sthna-dtr). She is the mother (dhtr), Goddess Mah-Lakm (mah-lakm), self-effulgent (svayam-prabh), the daughter of the milk ocean (sindhu-kany), and she who resides in Dvrak (dvrak-vsin). Text 43

buddhi sthiti sthna-rp sarva-kraa-kra bhakti-priy bhakti-gamy bhaktnanda-pradyin She is intelligence (buddhi), steadiness (sthiti and sthna-rp), the cause of all causes (sarva-kraa-kra), fond of serving Lord Ka (bhakti-priy), approached by devotional service (bhakti-gamy), and the giver of bliss to the devotees (bhaktnandapradyin). Text 44 bhakta-kalpa-drumtt tathtta-gu tath mano-'dhiht-dev ca ka-prema-parya She is more than a kalpa-vka tree for the devotees (bhakta-kalpa-drumtt), the possessor of the greatest transcendental virtues (atta-gu), the predominating Deity of the heart (mano-'dhiht-dev), and the girl completely in love with Lord Ka (kaprema-parya). Text 45 nirmay saumya-dtr tath madana-mohin ekna iv kem durg durgati-nin She is free from all disease (nirmay), the most gentle, kind, and generous (saumya-dtr), more charming than Kmadeva (madana-mohin), one without a second (ek and ana), the wife of Lord iva (iv and durg), happiness and auspiciousness personified (kem), and the person who destroys all calamities (durgati-nin). himlaya-sut sarv prvat girij sat She is the person who quickly gives liberation (sadyo-mukti-prad), the goddess (dev), the essence of the Vedas (veda-sr), greater than the greatest (part par), and Goddess Prvat (himlaya-sut, sarv, prvat, girij, and sat). Text 48 daka-kany deva-mt manda-lajj hares tanu vndraya-priy vnd vndvana-vilsin She is Daka's daughter (daka-kany), the demigods' mother (deva-mt), bold (mandalajj), Lord Hari's own transcendental form (hares tanu), fond of Vndvana (vndrayapriy), goddess Vnd (vnd), and the girl who enjoys pastimes in Vndvana (vndvana-vilsin). Text 49 vilsin vaiav ca brahmaloka-pratihit rukmi revat satyabhm jmbavat tath She is playful (vilsin), Lord Viu's companion (vaiav), the predominating goddess of the spiritual world (brahmaloka-pratihit), Rukmi (rukmi), Revat (revat), Satyabhm (satyabhm), and Jmbavat (jmbavat). Text 50 sulakma mitravind klind jahnu-kanyk paripr pratar tath haimavat gati She is Sulakma (sulakma), Mitravind (mitravind), Klind (klind), Jhnav (jahnu-kanyk), most perfect (paripr and pratar), Goddess Prvat (haimavat), and the supreme goal of life (gati). Text 51 aprv brahma-rp ca brahma-pariplin brahma-bha-madbyasth brahma-bha-rpi She is unprecedented (aprv), spiritual (brahma-rp), the protectress of the universe (brahma-pariplin), the goddess who enters the material universe (brahma-

bha-madbyasth), the goddess who Herself is the material universe (brahmabha-rpi). Text 52 aa-rpa-madhyasth tatha-pariplin aa-bhya-samhartr iva-brahma-hari-priy She is the goddess who is the material universe (aa-rp), the goddess who has entered the material universe (aa-madhyasth), the protectress of the material universe (aapariplin), the goddess who is beyond the material universe (aa-bhy), the destroyer of the material universe (aa-samhartr), and she who is dear to iva, Brahm, and Viu (iva-brahma-hari-priy). Text 53 mah-viu-priy kalpavka-rp nirantar sra-bht sthir gaur gaurg ai-ekhar She is Lord Mah-Viu's beloved (mah-viu-priy), a kalpa-vka tree (kalpa-vkarp), eternal (nirantar and sthir), the best (sra-bht), fair (gaur and gaurg), and Lord iva's wife (ai-ekhar). Text 54 veta-campaka-varbh ai-koi-sama-prabh mlat-mlya-bhhy mlat-mlya-dhri She is fair as a veta campaka flower (veta-campaka-varbh), splendid as millions of moons (ai-koi-sama-prabh), and decorated with jasmine garlands (mlat-mlyabhhy and mlat-mlya-dhri). Text 55 ka-stut ka-knt vndvana-vilsin tulasy-adhiht-dev sasrrava-pra-d She is praised by Ka (ka-stut) and loved by Ka (ka-knt). She enjoys pastimes in Vndvana (vndvana-vilsin). She is Goddess Tulas (tulasy-adhihtdev). She carries one to the farther shore of the ocean of birth and death (sasrravapra-d).

Text 56 sradhradmbhod yasod gopa-nandin atta-gaman gaur parnugraha-kri She gives what is the best (srad). She gives food (hrad). She gives water (ambhod). She gives fame (yaod). She is a gopa's daughter (gopa-nandin), very graceful (attagaman), fair (gaur), and kind to others (parnugraha-kri). Text 57 karurava-sampur karurava-dhri mdhav mdhava-manohri yma-vallabh She is a flooding ocean of mercy (karurava-sampur and karurava-dhri). She is Lord Ka's beloved (mdhav and yma-vallabh), and she charms Lord Ka's heart (mdhava-mano-hri). Text 58 andhakra-bhaya-dhvast magaly magala-prad r-garbh r-prad r r-nivscyutapriy She removes the fear of darkness (andhakra-bhaya-dhvast). She is auspicious (magaly), the giver of auspiciousness (magala-prad), the mother of all beauty (rgarbh), the giver of beauty (r-prad), the queen of beauty (r), the abode of beauty (r-nivs), and the beloved of the infallible Supreme Personality of Godhead (acyutapriy). Text 59 r-rp r-har rd r-km r-svarpi rdmnanda-dtr ca rdmevara-vallabh She is the form of beauty (r-rp and r-svarpi), the remover of beauty (r-har), the giver of beauty (rd), the desire for beauty (r-km), the giver of bliss to rdm (rdmnanda-dtr), and dear to rdm's master (rdmevara-vallabh). r-kriy-rpi rl r-ka-bhajannvit She has beautiful hips (r-nitamb). She is the beautiful queen of the gops (r-gae). She is beautiful (r-svarprit and rl). She is the Vedas (ruti) and the activities of devotional service (r-kriy-rpi). She devotedly worships r Ka (r-kabhajannvit). Text 61 r-rdh rmat reh reha-rp ruti-priy yoge yoga-mt ca yogtit yuga-priy She worships Lord Ka (r-rdh). She is beautiful (rmat). She is the best (reh and reha-rp). She is dear to the Vedas (ruti-priy), the queen of yoga (yoge), the mother of yoga (yoga-mt), beyond yoga (yogtit), and dear to the two divine persons (yugapriy). Text 62 yoga-priy yoga-gamy yogin-gaa-vandit jav-kusuma-saks d_im-kusumopam She is dear to yoga (yoga-priy), approached by yoga (yoga-gamy), worshiped by the yogins (yogin-gaa-vandit), glorious as a rose (jav-kusuma-saks), and glorious as a pomegranate (d_im-kusumopam). Text 63 nlmbaradhar dhr dhairya-rpa-dhar dhiti ratna-sihsana-sth ca ratna-kuala-bhit She wears blue garments (nlmbara-dhar). She is very sober and serious (dhr and dhairya-rpa-dhar). She is seriousness (dhiti). She sits on a jewel throne (ratnasihsana-sth) and She is decorated with jewel earrings (ratna-kuala-bhit). She wears jewel ornaments (ratnlakra-samyukt), a necklace of jewels (ratna-mlyadhar and ratna-ml-vibhit), and a necklace of the kings of jewels (ratnendra-srahrhy). She is transcendental (par). Text 65 indranla-mai-nyastapda-padma-ubh uci krttik paurams ca amvasy bhaypah Her lotus feet are beautiful with sapphire ornaments (indranla-mai-nyasta-pda-padmaubh) and She is beautiful (uci). She is the month of Krttika (krttik), the full-moon day (paurams), the new-moon day (amvasy), and the remover of fears (bhaypah). Text 66 govinda-rja-ghin govinda-gaa-pjit vaikuha-ntha-ghi vaikuha-paramlay She is Lord Govinda's queen (govinda-rja-ghin) and She is worshiped by Lord Govinda's devotees (govinda-gaa-pjit). She is the queen of Vaikuha's king (vaikuha-nthaghi) and She resides in the supreme abode of Vaikuha (vaikuha-paramlay). Text 67 vaikuhadeva-devhy tath vaikuha-sundar mahlas vedavat st sdhv pati-vrat She is glorious in the comopany of Vaikuha's supreme king (vaikuha-deva-devhy) and She is the beautiful goddess of Vaikuha (vaikuha-sundar). She is languid (mahlas), wise (vedavat), saintly (sdhv), and devoted to Her Lord (pati-vrat). She is Goddess St (st). Text 68 anna-pr sadnandarp kaivalya-sundar kaivalya-dyin reh gopntha-manohar She is Goddess Durg (anna-pr). Her form is full of eternal bliss (sadnanda-rp). She is the most beautiful (kaivalya-sundar), the giver of liberation (kaivalya-dyin), the best (reh), and the girl who charms Lord Gopntha's heart (gopntha-manohar). Text 69

gopnthevar ca nyik-nayannvit nyik nyaka-prt nyaknanda-rpi She is Lord Gopntha's queen (gopnthevar). She is passionate (ca). She has the eyes of a beautiful heroine (nyik-nayannvit). She is a beautiful heroine (nyik). She is dear to the hero Ka (nyaka-prt). She delights the hero Ka (nyaknanda-rpi). Text 70 e eavat earpi jagad-ambik gopla-plik my jynandaprad tath She reclines on Lord ea (e, eavat, and ea-rpi). She is the mother of the universe (jagad-ambik), the protectress of the cowherd people (gopla-plik), the Lord's illusory potency (my), and she who gives the bliss of victory (jynandaprad). Text 1 r-mahdeva uvca ity etat kathita devi rdh-nma-sahasrakam ya pahet phayad vapi tasya tuyati mdhava Lord iva said: Thus I have spoken to you the thousand names of r Rdh. Lord Mdhava is pleased with anyone who reads or has someone else read these names. Text 2 ki tasya yamunbhir v nadbhi sarvata priye kuruketrdi-trthai ca yasya tuo janrdana When one pleases Lord Janrdana what need has he for the sacred rivers headed by the Yamun, or the holy places headed by Kuruketra? Text 3 stotrasysya prasdena ki na sidhyati bh-tale brhmao brahma-varcasv katriyo jagati-pati What perfection is not attained in this world by the mercy of this prayer? By its mercy a brhmaa becomes powerful as the demigod Brahm and a katriya becomes king of the world. Texts 4 and 5 vaiyo nidhi-patir bhyt dro mucyeta janmata

brahma-haty-sur-pnasteyder ati-ptakt sadyo mucyeta devei satya satya na saaya rdh-nma-sahasrasya samna nsti bh-tale By its mercy a vaiya becomes the master of great wealth and a dra becomes free from his low birth. By its mercy one becomes free from a host of sins beginning with killing a brhmaa, drinking wine, and committing theft. O queen of the demigods, it is true. There is no doubt it is true. In this world there is nothing equal to the thousand names of r Rdh. Text 6 svarge vapy atha ptle girau va jalato 'pi v nta para ubha stotram trtha nta para param In Svargaloka, in Ptlaloka, on the mountains, or in the oceans no prayer is better than this prayer, no holy place is better than this prayer. Text 7 ekday ucir bhtv ya pahet susamhita tasya sarvrtha-siddhi syc chuyd va su-obhane A person who becomes clean and attentively reads or hears this prayer on the ekda day attains all his desires, O beautiful one. Text 8 dvday pauramsy v tulas-sannidhau ive ya pahet uyd vapi tasya tat tat phala u O auspicious one, please hear the result attained by a person who reads or hears this prayer in the presence of Tulas-dev on a dvdai or on the full-moon day. Texts 9-14 avamedha rjasya brhaspatya tath trikam ati-rtra vjapeyam agnioma tath ubham

ktv yat phalam pnoti rutv tat phalam pnuyt krttike cam prpya pahed va uyd api sahasra-yuga-kalpnta vaikuha-vasati labhet tata ca brahma-bhavane ivasya bhavane puna surdhintha-bhavane punar yti sa-lokatm gag-tra samsdya ya pahet uyd api vio srpyam yti satya satya surevari mama vaktra-girer jt prvat-vadanrit rdh-ntha-sahasrkhy nad trailokya-pvan pahyate hi may nitya bhakty akty yathocitam A person who reads or hears this prayer attains the same result as if he had performed avamedha, rajasya, brhaspatya, trika, atirtra, vjapeya, and agnioma yaj{.sy 241}as. A person who reads or hears this prayer on the aam day of the month of Krttika lives in Vaikuha for thousands of yugas. He goes to Brahm's abode, iva's abode, and Indra's abode. A person who on the Ganges shore reads or hears this prayer attains a spiritual form like that of Lord Viu. O queen of the demigods, it is true! It is true! This prayer, called the thousand names of r Rdh, is a river born on the mountain of my words that now takes shelter in the mouth of r Prvat, a river that purifies the three worlds. I regularly read this prayer with devotion, as far as I am able. Text 15 mama pra-sama hy etat tava prty prakitam nbhaktya pradtavya paya kadcana nstikyvirgya rga-yuktya sundari This prayer is dear to me as life. That is why I have revealed it to you, my beloved. O beautiful one, this prayer should never be given to one who is not a devotee, to a blasphemer, to an atheist, to one who is not austere, or to one filled with material desires. Text 16

tath deya mah-stotra hari-bhaktya akari vaiaveu yath-akti dtre puyrtha-line O auspicious one, this prayer should be given to one who is devoted to Lord Hari. It should be given to a pious person who will in turn give it to the Vaiavas as far as he is able. Text 17 rdh-nma-sudh-vri mama vaktra-sudhmbudhe uddhtsau tvay yatnt yatas tva vaiavgra You are the best of Vaiavas because you have carefully taken the nectar of r Rdh's names from the nectar ocean of my words. Texts 18-20 viuddha-sattvya yathrtha-vdine dvijasya sev-niratya mantrie dtre yath-akti subhakta-mnase rdh-pada-dhyna-parya obhane hari-pdbja-madhupamano-bhtya mnase rdh-pda-sudhsvdaline vaiavya ca dadyt stotra mah-puya hari-bhakti-prasdhanam janmntara na tasysti rdh-ka-padrthina O beautiful one, a person who gives this very sacred prayer, which gives Ka-bhakti, to one situated in the mode of pure goodness, to one who speaks the truth, to one who chants sacred mantras, to one who gives charity as far as he is able, to one whose heart is devoted to the Lord, to one who meditates on r Rdh's feet, to one whose mind is a bumblebee at the lotus flower of Lord Hari's feet, to one who is thoughtful, to one who tastes the nectar at r Rdh's feet, or to one who is a Vaiava, attains r r Rdh-Ka's feet. He does not take birth again. Text 21 mama pr vaiav hi te rakrtham eva hi la may dharyate hi nnyath maitra-kraam

The Vaiavas are my very life. I carry my trident to protect them. There is no other reason. Text 22 hari-bhakti-dvim arthe la sandharyate may u devi yathrtha me gadita tvayi su-vrate I carry my trident to punish they who hate the devotees of Lord Hari. Hear this, O pious goddess, for to you I speak the truth. Text 23 bhaktsi me priysi tvam ada sneht prakitam kadpi nocyate devi may nma-sahasrakam You are my devotee and You are dear to me. Therefore, out of affection I have revealed this to you. O goddess, I have never before spoken these thousand names.
