Community
garden
ready for
season
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
Tucked away on Camden Av-
enue is a community garden
many dont know exists.
According to Lee Renner,
Moorestown Garden Club presi-
dent, the property was formerly
owned by Perkins Center for the
Arts until it was sold to the town-
ship in 1980. Since then, the
Moorestown Garden Club has
maintained the property as a
community garden.
Eighteen plots, each approxi-
mately the same size, are on the
property. Moorestown residents
and organizations use the $15 per
year plots to plant a variety of
produce and flowers.
Some are reoccurring renters,
and almost all plots are occupied.
Renner said most grow vegeta-
bles, while others plant perenni-
als, rose bushes or other types of
flowers.
The garden gives residents a
spot to grow flowers and produce,
because not everyone has room
for a backyard garden, Renner
said.

Girl Scout Troop No. 22169 Cadet members Cate Aberant, left, and Tanya Nasife, and volunteer Sam Infanger are finishing the last of
the holes for red bud trees to be planted. STEM and the Moorestown Tree Committee organized a tree planting day at Strawbridge
Lake Park on Saturday, April 27. Volunteers gathered to lend a helping hand, planting more than 100 trees and shrubs along Route
38. Girl Scout Cadet Troop No. 22169 and Boy Scout Troop No. 601 helped plant the trees and shrubs. The New Jersey Tree Founda-
tion donated the trees and shrubs. For more photos, please see page 18.

HERNIATED DISC
We constantly see patients with Herniated Disc in the neck and lower back.
Repeated injury to the spine, time, use and abuse weaken the spinal ligaments
and place more stress on the Disc's causing them to weaken. When the MRI was
invented it provided a window into the soft tissue Intervertebral disc, and exposed
the fact that 50% of the adult population has herniated disc's. Unfortunately 90%
of the population will experience serious low back pain before the age of 50.
Chiropractic can help correct the spinal problems called Subluxation the leads
to herniated disc's. We use a combination of Long Axial traction, Flexion
distraction and Computerized Adjusting to ease the pressure off of the disc and
improve spinal function to reduce pain and restore mobility. Developing core
strength is essential to having a healthy back. Chiropractic is a safe non drug or
surgical approach to treating herniated disc's.

T
he 102 days between Memorial
Day and Labor Day weekends
are crucial for the Jersey Shore,
which, no matter what town you live
in, has a vital impact on the Garden
States economy. And while beautiful
weather is causing excitement for
beach season to be high, beach towns
are also experiencing high anxiety as
the big first weekend looms less than
three weeks away.
Six months removed from the devas-
tation caused by Hurricane Sandy,
Shore towns are still fighting to fully
recover. Beach remediation is going on
in full force in Ocean City, as we speak.
While the Boardwalk is alive and well,
and parts of the beach are open to the
public, other parts are still under
heavy construction.
Further north, towns such as Sea-
side Heights, Sandy Hook, Point Pleas-
ant and Sea Bright are all scrambling
to get as much done as possible before
the season opens.
What effect this will have on the suc-
cess, or failure, of the local economy
wont be known until the end of sum-
mer, and might not be felt in full until
the winter holiday shopping season.
In Atlantic City, a purchase deal be-
tween PokerStars and the Atlantic
Club casino put a damper on hopes, at
least temporarily. PokerStars, a lead-
ing company in online poker and other
gambling, had been trying to buy the
casino since the fall, but final attempts
to do so fell through.
Now, many of the approximately
1,800 workers at the casino which re-
ported a $43 million net loss in 2012
could be out of a job.
Gov. Christie believes the states
newest offering of online gambling,
which was passed in February, could
become a $1.2 billion industry, but that
wont happen for a few years yet, for
sure.
So what can be done in the mean-
time?
If youre Atlantic City, keep trying to
find a buyer for the Atlantic Club, and
expand marketing efforts to bring
more gamblers to the coast.
If youre a Shore town, welcome vis-
itors with open arms, and use these
last two weeks of preparation to work
as hard as possible.
If youre a New Jersey resident, stay
local this summer and spend money at
our Shore towns.
Every little bit will help us all in the
long run.

There are benefits to buying
local produce as well as growing
it in your backyard, or in this
case, in a community garden.
Buying local produce has been
recommended in the state since
the Jersey Fresh initiative was
launched in 1984.
According to Don Powell, liai-
son to Sustainable Moorestown
and the Moorestown Businesses
Association, buying local and
growing your own produce helps
cut back on emissions and cost to
ship produce.
The community garden is
more than just about thinking en-
vironmentally friendly its a
community retreat.
We have reoccurring garden-
ers. But the garden itself needed
an infusion, Renner said.
She said over the years, mem-
bers of the Moorestown Garden
Club fluctuated, causing the up-
keep of the community garden to
fluctuate as well.
Its not handled or it hadnt
been handled with the same type
of consistency, and now we are
trying to make that change and to
make it a real noticed and viable
part of the community that it is,
she said.
Renner said over the years,
growing trees shaded a few of the
plots.
However, the garden club went
to the township and requested the
trees be trimmed to allow more
sunlight to hit those plots.
Renner said the township has
been extremely cooperative, as is
the rest of the community, but the
communitys awareness of the
garden is still important.
Recently, the club received $500
in grant money as part of the
Garden Club of New Jerseys
Community Garden/Jersey
Fresh/Jersey Grown Project
Committee. The club was able to
use the funds for the garden.
Things change over time,
Renner said, adding the commu-
nity garden needed to be spruced
up a bit.

DELRAN, NJ
The Moorestown U15A Black
lacrosse team won two out of
three games recently. On Friday
evening they played West Dept-
ford in a home game at Wesley
Bishop Park.
The boys jumped out to a 5-3
lead at halftime behind two goals
by Steven Weissman. They kept
up the pressure in the second half
and cruised to 9-4 victory with
additional goals scored by Dante
Lucarini, Kade Chrostowski,
Peter LaDelfa, Ryan Pozega, Sean
Carden, Bobby Garrison and
Josh Fauvell.
Trevor Jones led the team with
six ground balls and added two
assists, while Josh Buck and
Ryan Finley dominated the face-
offs.
The team then traveled to the
shore where they completely dis-
mantled the host team of Rum-
son-Fair Haven by a score of 9-1.
Goalie Max Blank turned in a
solid effort behind the great de-
fensive play of Reid Greer, Judah
Hicks, Max Harrop and Garri-
son.
Daniel Rohrbach and LaDelfa
each scored two goals with addi-
tional goals notched by Lucarini,
Stephen Goralski, Jones, Pozega
and Kevin Travis.
In the third game, the boys ran
out of gas against a tough team
from Watchung Hills.
They tried to rally back from a
half-time deficit but fell short in a
10-6 loss.
Goal scorers were LaDelfa (2),
Travis, Fauvell and Weissman,
and Harrop led the team in
ground balls.

U15A Black lacrosse teams wins two out of three
The funds were used to help
plant 20 shrubs and improve its
overall appearance. Soon, a stone
walk will be installed to create a
path into the garden as well as
new fencing.
Renner said volunteers helped
with the project, including Leon-
berg Nursery donating truck-
loads of stone dust, soil and
mulch.
Another community donation
to the gardens is from Henry De-
penbrock, who is giving the gar-
den two tall shrubs and installing
stone dust.
Just to make the entrance
look nicer and to draw attention
to the fact that there is good stuff
going on here, Renner said.
The best part about the garden
is that it helps bring the commu-
nity together, Renner said.
Live Civilly a local nonprofit
organization dedicated to encour-
aging children and adults to be-
come more involved in the com-
munity rented a plot to grow
produce for the food pantry in
town.
The Junior Garden Club is
growing basil in one of the raised
flowerbeds. It will turn the basil
into pesto sauce to sell, with pro-
ceeds going to local food pantries.
Renner said it is a seed to
table experience.
The Perkins Center also has a
plot for the summer camp where
children will get a chance to grow
and maintain their own produce.
According to Renner, children
from inside and outside the com-
munity attend Perkins summer
camps.
The reality is that, here in
Moorestown is where so many
make the assumption that every-
one is really well off. Fortunately,
that is true. But we do have needs
right here in the community,
Renner said.
Renner said the garden is truly
a community effort. It brings the
community together in various
ways and allows groups such as
Perkins and Live Civilly to grow
produce and give back to the com-
munity.

KRISTINA SCALA/The Moorestown Sun
STEM and the Moorestown Tree Committee or-
ganized a tree planting day at Strawbridge
Lake Park on Saturday, April 27. Volunteers
gathered to lend a helping hand, planting more
than 100 trees and shrubs along Route 38.
Girl Scout Cadet Troop No. 22169 and Boy
Scout Troop No. 601 helped plant the trees and
shrubs. The New Jersey Tree Foundation do-
nated the trees and shrubs. Clockwise, from
top left: STEM member Jean Fox, right, in-
structs Girl Scout Troop No. 22169 Cadet
member Tanya Nasife, volunteer Sam Infanger
and Cadet Cate Aberant on where they will dig
the next hole; Boy Scout Troop No. 601 mem-
ber Matthew Knowlton waters the last of the
trees; Volunteer Ally Poaletti, left and John
Gibson, Tree Planting and Preservation Com-
mittee member, pour cedar mulch into a buck-
et before dispersing it to the planted trees;
Sue Poaletti, Boy Scout Troop No. 601
fundraising chair, tosses a bucket into the
lake; and STEM president Kathy Huffman fin-
ishes digging a place for volunteer Sam In-
fanger to finish planting the tree.
TREE PLANTING
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
Twenty-seven homes are being
built next to Willowbrook Coun-
try Club off Bridgeboro Road, 10
of which are likely to be finished
and sold within the next year.
Willowbrook Country Club
sold approximately 30 acres of
land and moved two course holes
to accommodate the project.
Four or five years ago, the first
phase of the subdivision was ap-
proved. The second phase would
add 17 more homes with access
from Garwood Road.
According to Patty Djokovich,
Cornell Custom Homes sales
manager, construction began
with phase one at the start of
2013.
She said six homes have al-
ready been sold and the first
homeowner is moving in May.
Each two-story home could
range from 4,000 square feet to
8,000 square feet or more, with a
starting price of $1.2 million.
Djokovich said the price depends
on what the homeowner wants.
According to Cornells website,
the architecture of the homes
would fit into the historic look of
Moorestown. But new homes in
any township could receive both a
positive and negative reaction
from residents.
Some people look at new
homes as not a good thing be-
cause they can contribute to more
traffic and more children, Tom
Ford, the townships community
development director, said,
adding others might see these
large homes as an increase in rat-
ables for the township.
He said its all based on resi-
dents opinions.
Board of Education President
Don Mishler said the new homes
would not have an enormous im-
pact on the school district.
We have been through these
phases and cycles before, he
said, adding if all school-aged
children moved into these homes
at the same time, it would draw
the school boards attention.
The homes built at Laurel
Creek were more of a concern to
the school district since more
than 300 homes were added to the
township.
We certainly welcome all of
these residents and are ready to
educate their children, Mishler
said.
