Mothers Day
In todays Gospel, Jesus says farewell to his disciples. It is a parting tinged with sadness, but also with the promise of joy. He offers the disciples three important parting gifts: understanding of Scripture, linking its message to their own experience of Jesus; he promises the imminent outpouring of the Holy Spirit; finally, he bestows a loving blessing, promising to be with them until the end of time. What connects the three gifts? Each of them represents a continuation of the life of Jesus in the hearts and lives of his disciples. Even though he will no longer be physically present to them, Jesus lives on in his Church: that is to say, in each and every one of us. We also have the pleasure of welcoming Sr. Kay Duffin, CND to the pulpit this weekend. She will help us make the connection between the liturgical feast of the Ascension and the gift of mothers, whom we celebrate in a special way this Sunday. Jesus invites us to abide in his Spirit, to create a welcoming space for the Spirit in our lives. From the very beginning, was it not our mothers who made room for us: in their wombs, their hearts, their homes? Throughout our formative years, this indwelling continued. Our mothers nursed us, changed us, delighted in us, fussed over us, worried about us. To the best of their ability, with the grace of God, they give us the closest thing this world knows to unconditional love. After giving us our roots, our mothers give us wings: they let us fly, trusting that the safe space of love created will span the distance between them and their wandering adult children. So let us give thanks to God for the gift of our mothers those still living with us, those whom God has already taken to their eternal home. Let us pray for all women who, in many and diverse ways, have shared and nurtured the gift of life in us. Happy Mothers Day!
All parish volunteers are invited to an appreciation luncheon on Sunday, June 2nd, 12:30-2:30 in the parish hall. If you have given of your time in any manner during the past year, your presence will be welcomed.
