Bandits hold off Kernels 4-2

DAVENPORT, Iowa The Quad Cities River Bandits held off the Kernels 4-2 on Wednesday night at Modern Woodmen Park. Each team had three errors in the game, and half of the runs were unearned. Trailing 4-1 going into the bottom of the 9th inning, the Kernels (21-9) put the tying run into scoring position. The rally started when Tyler Grimes doubled with one out. Romy Jimenez drew a walk to put two men on. Candido Pimentel then bounced the ball deep at short, and Bandits shortstop Austin Elkins throw past 3rd base allowed Grimes to score, cutting the deficit to 4-2. Jimenez and Pimentel both moved into scoring position. Elkins redeemed himself with two outs by gloving a bouncer up the middle off the bat of Niko Goodrum and nailing him by a half step, ending the game. Dalton Hicks homered in the 6th inning for the other Kernels run. The ball was launched deep to right field for his 5th of the season, getting the Kernels on the board. Quad Cities (19-11) scored single runs in the 1st, 5th, 6th, and 7th innings. Austin Elkins singled home Brian Blasik in the 1st inning. Teoscar Hernandez homered in the 5th inning. Jesse Wierzbiecki scored on a double play in the 6th inning after reaching 3rd base on a throwing error. Jordan Scott walked in the 7th inning and scored on another throwing error. Brett Lee (2-2) took the loss for the Kernels, going 6 innings and allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits. He struck out 3 and walked 2. Alex Muren allowed 1 unearned run in 1 inning. David Hurlbut pitched 1 scoreless inning. Quad Cities used five pitchers for the win as Jordan Jankowski (1-0) picked up the win in relief, going 2.1 innings. Brian Holmes started and went 4.2 innings, allowing 0 runs on 3 hits while striking out 8 and walking 3. John Neely collected his 6th save as he pitched the 9th inning. The Bandits now trail the Kernels by 2 games for the Western Division lead, the smallest lead the Kernels have had since April 27.
