Lesson Title WW2- U.S. in the Pacific- Island Hopping Topic This 80 minute lesson will go through U.S.

campaigns in the Pacific theater during WW2. Important events such as the Battle of Bataan and Bataan Death March will be looked at, and the key strategy of island hopping will be a focus with a simulation activity for students to participate in. Standards This lesson will help students to: -Understand historical patterns, periods of time, and the relationships among these elements -Understand the role of individuals and groups within a society as promoters of change or the status quo -Understand the effects of geographic factors on historical events -Understand the role of innovation on the development and interaction of societies -Understand cause and effect relationships and other historical thinking skills in order to interpret events and issues Learning Objective Students will be able to summarize the strategies used by the United States in their various campaigns in the Pacific theater during WW2 Procedure Introduce lesson with a map of the Pacific to give a visual idea of what will be covered. Point out the key islands that will be looked at as part of the island hopping campaign. Point out where the Philippines are. Then specifically note where the Bataan province in the Philippines is. This will lead into the prepared reading and questions that students will do on the Battle of Bataan and the Bataan Death March. Allow approximately 15-20 minutes to complete this inclass assignment. Next, discuss some of the atrocities of the Death March which students would have read about and see what they thought about some of the gruesome aspects of the way the Japanese treated POWs.

Return to the map of the Pacific and point out the island of Midway, as the Battle of Midway will be the next thing covered. Play the YouTube video about the battle of midway. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1v4I6RGRW50 Discuss what was watched and note the significance of this battle in leading the US to begin to take the offensive in the Pacific and move into their strategy of island hopping. Present the PowerPoint definition of island hopping for students to take down, and describe what island hopping is, informally checking to see that students have a general understanding. Next, introduce the island hopping activity that takes students through a simulation of island hopping to get a better idea of the strategy and how it was used in the Pacific. Hopefully the simulation will help them to better remember the main idea and will stick with them because it is more of a real experience. Debrief and discuss the activity, what they learned, and what various simulations were portraying in relation to the U.S. strategy in the Pacific. Specifically note the importance of the last two battles of the activity, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Checking For Understanding Informal assessment will be used throughout the lesson by discussing things that are being covered with students and checking to see that they are getting the main ideas. They will need to also fill out and turn in the questions that go with the Bataan reading, so that will be a good chance for formative assessment. The simulation activity will be discussed immediately after it is completed so students can demonstrate their learning by explaining what each event or experience in the simulation portrayed.
