FundamentalsofOperation
SteppermotorsoperatedifferentlyfromDCbrushmotors,whichrotatewhenvoltageisappliedto theirterminals.Steppermotors,ontheotherhand,effectivelyhavemultiple"toothed" electromagnetsarrangedaroundacentralgearshapedpieceofiron.Theelectromagnetsare energizedbyanexternalcontrolcircuit,suchasamicrocontroller.Tomakethemotorshaftturn, firstoneelectromagnetisgivenpower,whichmakesthegear'steethmagneticallyattractedtothe electromagnet'steeth.Whenthegear'steetharethusalignedtothefirstelectromagnet,theyare slightlyoffsetfromthenextelectromagnet.Sowhenthenextelectromagnetisturnedonandthe firstisturnedoff,thegearrotatesslightlytoalignwiththenextone,andfromtheretheprocessis repeated.Eachofthoseslightrotationsiscalleda"step,"withanintegernumberofstepsmakinga fullrotation.Inthatway,themotorcanbeturnedbyapreciseangle.
