The Moorestown Sun

Every year, there is a high
school sports matchup that is a
must see event. An event made up
of a fierce rivalry, a raucous
crowd and big stakes. A game in
which the result goes a long way
in deciding whether a team had a
successful season or a disappoint-
ing one. This year, like many
other years, Moorestown and
Shawnee girls lacrosse has been
that matchup.
Deanna Knobloch, coach of the
Moorestown Lady Quakers, was
comfortable saying this is one of
the biggest rivalries in the histo-
ry of the sport in New Jersey
without question.
It is tough to argue with
Knobloch. Moorestown has won
the most state titles with 19. Who
is second? Shawnee with seven.
The next closest schools have
four. Shawnee has appeared in the
state finals 22 times; only
Moorestown has been to more
with 27. Moorestown incredibly
won 10 consecutive titles from
2000-09; Shawnee won three con-
secutive titles twice in the 1990s.
With the success both teams
have become accustomed to, the
bar is set high every season.
Our girls come in with the
goal of being undefeated, to play
in the tournament of champions,

Moorestown Council was busy
last week, making a move on rev-
enue items and approving the
final 2013 budget.
On second reading, council ap-
proved a field sponsorship pro-
gram, awarded East Gate the
townships fifth liquor license
and approved the municipal
budget, which results in residents
seeing a tax increase of $27 per
year for the average assessed
home.
Resident Mark Hines was con-
cerned with the approval of the
2013 budget and the townships
use of surplus from four liquor li-
censes awarded to the
Moorestown Mall last year.
According to township CFO
Tom Merchel, when the township
awarded $4 million in liquor li-
censes to the mall, the townships
surplus increased to $5.266 mil-
lion. Merchel said, after $2.375
million was used in the 2013 budg-
et, it leaves the township with just
less than $3 million in surplus.
Hines said his main concern is
with the township using the sur-
plus, which might make it diffi-
cult to replenish what was
gained.
Its not a practice I really advo-
cate, Hines said.
Hines asked council if there is
a plan next year to close the gap
on appropriations and revenues.
To me, this says we have an
unsustainable budget, and it has
to be dealt with at some point. We
are about 10 percent short of rev-
enue outside of the surplus ver-
sus our appropriations, he said.
Township manager Scott
Carew reassured Hines the sale of
the $1.03 million license to East
Gate would add to the township
revenue. A sixth license would be
awarded in the future.
The license would be used
shortly, according to East Gates
lawyer Niall OBrien. According
to OBrien, two or three tenants
are interested in the Friendlys lo-
cation on Nixon Drive.
Another source of revenue for
the township is a sponsorship
program.
Carew said the township and
athletic clubs would split the pro-
ceeds after costs related to the
program are covered. The pro-
gram would offer annual banner
sponsorship opportunities as well
as field naming rights.
He said the township will col-
lect the money for the banners,
and volunteers from the athletic
and recreational organizations
would help solicit for those funds.
Field banners for 2013 (June to
Dec. 1) are $400 for most fields and
$600 for the turf fields. Costs for
2014 banners are still being deter-
mined, according to Taylor De-
sign Group representatives.
Field naming rights range
from five- to 10-year terms with a
minimum bid of $5,000 for five
years on smaller fields and a min-
imum of $35,000 for 10 years for
one of the turf fields.

Jewish Association hosts food drive
to support community service
Recently, the newly formed
non-profit, Moorestown Jewish
Association sponsored a food
drive to support the associations
community service outreach and
promote Tikkun Olam (repairing
the world). Twenty bags of non-
perishable food items and person-
al care items were collected and
prepared by association mem-
bers. Michelle Litwack and Sher-
ri Gold, from MJA, delivered the
donations of food to the
Moorestown Ministerium Food
Pantry located at 319 Chester Ave.
behind Saint Matthew Lutheran
Church.
According to Cathy Roberts of
the Moorestown Ministerium
Food Pantry, an affiliate of Live
Civilly, donations are critically
needed, especially non-perish-
ables, such as cereal, canned
fruit, fruit juice, pancake mix,
syrup and laundry detergent. The
food pantry serves up to 95 fami-
lies a month and anyone in need
is welcome without any proof of
need. Open the first and third
Monday of each month from
noon to 2 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m., the
food pantry seeks volunteers to
organize, collect and distribute
products. For more information,
or to donate or volunteer, contact
Cathy Roberts at
croberts3637@comcast.net.
In the absence of any
Moorestown synagogues, the non-
profit Moorestown Jewish Associ-
ation was established in 2012 to
build and sustain an open and
welcoming community for the ap-
proximately 1,900 Moorestown
Jewish residents to interact and
socialize. The organizations goal
is to also represent the Jewish
community in interfaith activi-
ties and promote increased par-
ticipation and interest in worth-
while community endeavors. For

ith each passing day, it
seems as though it gets
harder and harder for peo-
ple to smoke cigarettes in public.
Not that thats a bad thing, necessar-
ily. It has been medically proven, after-
all, that cigarettes are addictive and
harmful to the health of both the
smoker and the people who inhale sec-
ond-hand smoke.
But at what point are we taking the
regulation of smoking too far? Or,
rather, is there a too far when regu-
lating smoking?
Much like alcohol and gambling, cig-
arettes are a highly taxed and regulat-
ed, yet completely legal, vice.
Unlike alcohol and gambling,
though, the act of smoking itself is
harmful to others, whereas drinking
alcohol and placing a bet are not. So it
makes sense, then, that the govern-
ment is doing everything it can to pro-
tect non-smokers from being negative-
ly affected by smokers.
That deserves an obvious bravo.
The move toward healthier public
living began with the outlaw of smok-
ing inside bars and restaurants. No
longer were there smoking and
non-smoking sections; smokers had
to travel outside to enjoy a puff.
These restaurants and bars coun-
tered by building decks, porches and
other attached structures where smok-
ers could inhale, and non-smokers
could frequent at their own risk.
Next came the outlawing of smoking
in cities and publicly-owned property
such as parks and recreational areas.
Now, these health improvements
have begun to trickle down to the local
level.
Municipalities throughout New Jer-
sey are beginning to propose, and pass,
smoking bans on public property, at
parks and recreational facilities.
We applaud any move that improves
the health of the majority, but we cau-
tion municipalities to be careful not to
take it too far.
Cigarettes are not a controlled sub-
stance, so rules that govern how they
can be regulated are limited.
Earlier this year, Oregon tried to
make cigarettes a controlled substance
in their state, but that idea didnt pass
as of yet.
Were all for improved public health
and for not punishing non-smokers.
But we dont want to do it at the ex-
pense of the rights and freedoms of
smokers.
No smoking, no problem?
Is our government taking smoking bans too far?
Your thoughts
Do smokers have a right to puff outside
in public places? Are we taking smoking
bans too far, or are we not taking them
far enough? Let your voice be heard.

Moorestown stays
undefeated 16-0
so, yeah, expectations are high,
Knobloch said.
With playoffs beginning May
16, this matchup on Tuesday, May
7 was the perfect barometer of
where the teams are and where
they may be headed.
Both teams entered the game
undefeated, Moorestown 15-0,
Shawnee 12-0.
Janae Zechman, coach of the
Shawnee Lady Renegades, ac-
knowledged the hype leading up
to the game.
Im just excited to get this
game underway honestly, Zech-
man said before the game. Its a
big game for them and us.
Played in front of a large
crowd, made up of both
Moorestown and Shawnee fans,
the Lady Renegades jumped out
to an early 2-0 lead with both
goals coming from junior Caro-
line Shinske.
The Lady Quakers quickly re-
covered, tying the score 3-3 at
halftime. Moorestown senior
Gabby Frank chipped in two sec-
ond half goals as they outscored
Shawnee 5-1 the rest of the way,
leading to an 8-4 victory.
Knobloch credited her senior
class for the success this year.
Shannon Keeler does a great
job of communicating, of being a
leader. Megan Kelly runs our en-
tire defensive unit. Its honestly
difficult for me to single anyone
out; the senior class has come to-
gether as a whole while under-
classmen like Marie McCool
have stepped up in a big way, she
said.
The loss was a setback for
Shawnee but will perhaps be the
motivation it needs to secure a
Group IV title, and hopefully a re-
match with its rival at the Tour-
nament of Champions beginning
Wednesday, June 5.
The Group III tournament gets
underway Thursday, May 16 with
Group IV beginning on Friday,
May 17.

Larry Van Meter, Moorestown
Friends Schools head of school,
recently announced that the
schools early childhood educa-
tion program will be renamed Be-
ginnings at MFS: The
Moorestown Friends School
Early Childhood Program.
The school has a long history of
providing a high-quality educa-
tion to very young children that
dates back to 1883, when the
school offered one of the first
kindergartens in South Jersey.
The educational options for
young children at MFS have ex-
panded over the years to include
preschool and prekindergarten.
This new name will help dis-
tinguish our program from local
daycare and nursery school pro-
grams which dont offer the aca-
demic emphasis and diverse cur-
riculum provided by our pro-
gram, Van Meter said.
The options for early educa-
tion are wide-ranging and confus-
ing, and we hope parents consider
Moorestown Friends when
searching for the ideal education-
al option for their child.
Both prekindergarten and
kindergarten are exclusively full-
day programs.
However, there is an option for
parents to enroll children in a
half-day preschool program.
All Beginnings at MFS teach-
ers hold bachelors degrees and
most also possess advanced de-
grees. All MFS classes also have
two professionals in the class-
room through first grade.
In addition to the new moniker,
MFS also is offering year-round
coverage for working families via
ESF Vacation Camps.
Exclusively for MFS families,
ESF Vacation Camps provide pro-
grams for children in preschool
through fourth grade on vaca-

BRIEFS
Burlington County College an-
nounced that it has been awarded
more than $4.5 million from the
state for its proposed capital and
equipment projects.
Gov. Christie and the Secretary
of Higher Education Rochelle
Hendricks announced the list of
the 176 approved higher education
state-supported bond projects sent
to the Legislature. All of BCCs
projects were among those ap-
proved.
I am very pleased that the col-
lege will be receiving these state
funds for much-needed technology
upgrades, said Burlington Coun-
ty Freeholder Director Joe Don-
nelly.
To help the college secure the
grant funding from the state, the
Burlington County Board of Cho-
sen Freeholders, under the advice
of Freeholder Director Joe Don-
nelly, agreed to match funds up to
$500,000 for the technology proj-
ects.
I would like to thank Gov.
Christie for his support of higher
education and especially county
colleges through the funding of
these grants, said Donnelly.
The projects, which include the
Next Generation Enterprise Net-
work, Next Generation Education-
al Technology Project and Center
for the Advancement of Science
and Technology, will be funded
through three state-supported
bond programs administered by
the New Jersey Educational Facil-
ities Authority and a match of
$500,000 from Burlington County.
BCCs students and professors
will greatly benefit from a more
robust technology infrastructure,
digital classroom technology,
equipment upgrades, and a dedi-
cated space for collaborative learn-
ing, workforce development, and
BCCs growing science, technolo-
gy, engineering and math pro-
grams.
BCC received a total of
$4,573,881 from three state-sup-
ported bond programs, including
the Higher Education Technology
Infrastructure Fund, Higher Edu-
cation Equipment Leasing Fund
and Higher Education Facilities
Trust Fund.
Through the funding, BCC will
upgrade the colleges technology
infrastructure, provide better ac-
cess to instructional technology
and resources in the classrooms
and establish a science and tech-
nology center in the Lewis M.
Parker Center, located on the Pem-
berton Campus.
I can speak for the students
when I say that this is great news
for BCC, as well as for the students
on campus. Receiving this grant
money provides more technology
and room for us to grow as stu-
dents in our respective fields and
will enable us to utilize state-of-
the-art equipment and the newest
technology available, said Joseph
Hyland, incoming BCC Student
Government Association presi-
dent.
The ELF funds will go toward
providing more digital classroom
technology and relevant equip-
ment for professors and students,
particularly within the growing
STEM disciplines, to meet the
workforce demands of southern
New Jersey. This NGET project
will help digitally enable 100 per-
cent of BCCs viable classrooms
with next generation audio visual
and instructional technologies.
Currently, only 50 percent of
BCCs classrooms offer digital
A/V technologies. The project will
entail replacing and upgrading ex-
isting older classroom equipment,
as well as installing equipment in
classrooms that are currently not
digitally enabled.
BCCs new Center for the Ad-
vancement of Science and Tech-
nology will be developed through
HEFT funds.
The new center, an interior ren-
ovation and instructional expan-
sion in the Lewis M. Parker Cen-
ter, will have dedicated STEM
classrooms, lecture halls, collabo-
rative and group learning space,
laboratory/training facilities, and
areas for workforce development
and veterans. Providing this col-
laborative learning environment
and related educational equip-
ment and resources will provide
the relevant infrastructure to sup-
port student learning and profes-
sional and academic success in
high demand science and technol-
ogy fields.

Employer Support of the
Guard and Reserve honored Mar-
tin E. Judge Jr., Moorestown resi-
dent and CEO of The Judge
Group, a leading global profes-
sional services firm, for his sup-
port of our nations Total Force.
ESGR is a Department of De-
fense, mostly volunteer organiza-
tion that seeks to create a culture
where all American employers
value and support the military
service and sacrifice of their em-
ployees.
The prestigious Seven Seals
Award was presented to Judge by
ESGR State Employer Outreach
Director, Donna Clementoni and
Brig. Gen. (PA) Ret. Robert Pe-
tersen.
The award recognizes the ef-
forts by a citizen, business or or-
ganization, whose supportive ac-
tions have benefited all of the re-
serve components in a significant
manner.
The jobless rate among return-
ing National Guard and Reserve
units as well as members of the
Armed Forces who are leaving
full-time military service is caus-
ing great concern amongst law-
makers, military leadership and
veterans advocate groups.
Demobilizing units with
younger members or those that
enlisted right out of school typi-
cally experience a higher rate of
unemployment.
Disillusionment with job op-
portunities can negatively affect
retention rates, as reported at a
March 14 hearing of the House
Veterans Affairs Committees
economic opportunity panel.
The launch of the Judge
Groups newest division, VIP Ca-
reers (Veterans in Professional
Careers) paves the way for the
company to reduce the unemploy-
ment rate of U.S. military veter-
ans, reserve component members,
wounded warriors and military
spouses by helping them find re-
warding careers in the civilian
workforce.
VIP Careers Director Michael
Ferraro, who joins Judge after a
distinguished 32-year U.S. Air
Force career in both active duty
and the reserves, will be leading
the boots to boardroom efforts
by forging new public and private
relationships, and partnering
with government, not-for-profits
and corporate entities to reach the
common goal of reducing the un-
employment rate of our nations
heroes.
