The Clyde Passenger Steamer

Captain James Williamson

1904
Captain Williamson's 1904-published book, "The Clyde Passenger Steamer", which gives a
complete overview of all the Clyde Steamers from the appearance of Henry Bell's 1812
"Comet" to the appearance of the 1901 "King Edward", was uploaded on to scribd.com’s
‘Clyde Steamer’ lists at http://www.scribd.com/doc/1412977/Clyde-Passenger-Steamer-Capt-
James-Williamson-1904-408Pages in January 2008 but, for unknown reason, only the first
forty or so pages converted properly to scribd’s then but barely eighteen-month old webpage
system of publishing, the failure only noticed in recent time and, hopefully, everything now
to be found online and available for downloading after reading these notes.

The fact that none of the more than 6,000 people who tried to read the book online
commented on the problems, nearly 200 of them downloading the faulty file in an attempt to
open, is in hindsight quite remarkable !

Such was the size of Williamson’s book, its 408-pages taking up more than 35 mb of space
and on occasion taking more than two hours to download if using a ‘dial-up’ internet
connection, that the decision was taken to split the book’s PDF file into 11 sections which,
using a PDF ‘Spitter/Merger’ programme, could then be re-joined into a single volume.

The software program used to split the original PDF file copy of the book should also, if a close
check is kept on the renaming of files as one carries out the reconstruction process, enable
1
one to reconstruct the whole of the book in little less than an hour, even if one is unfamiliar
with the process and one should begin by downloading the “Free PD Fill PDF Editor 7.0” from
http://www.pdfill.com/pdf_tools_free.html and Download from
http://www.pdfill.com/download.html
it too probably necessary, which one will be told after the download, to download the Free
GhostScript 8.64 (10MB) program, the downloads and installation(s) straightforward.
