Founders Remark

History In The Making

Hello and welcome to the 4th Annual ACS Leadership Summit. We are thrilled and delighted to welcome the 2012/13 ACS committee and some of the outstanding performers from the last academic year. Over the last 4 years, there has been significant improvement in the way ACS is being managed. A lot of the credit has to be given to individuals who have gone above and beyond to deliver outstanding programmes, initiatives and partnerships for the benefit of African Caribbean Society members. A lot of our progress to-date is down to the increasing number of ACS members who feel better connected to their local ACS and are happy to recommend it to others. The last academic year was incredible! Weve been able to continue developing partnerships that put ACS members right in front of leading lemployers. ACS in the City Law Forum and Google Top Black Talent, were both successful events that benefited students from different universities. We are excited to announce that both programmes are returning in the new academic year in addition to a Banking Forum and Public Sector Forum. All these events will be taking place in November 2012. Application is open to ACS members from every university. Weve spent time listening to the ACS community and understanding what would make the ACS experience more enriching. Post the 2011 ACS Leadership Summit; weve organized the ACS Leader Chat (Feb 2012) and more recently a Presidents roundtable (Aug 2012) where we discussed what tool can improve the ACS experience. One of the outcomes of this discussion is the creation of the myACS mobile app to support local ACS with their membership management. This is something truly special and we are looking forward to its widespread adoption and use. The 2012 National ACS Survey has been completed with a record 1,100 (a 35% increase from 2011) ACS members adding their voice to the debate. We want to thank everyone who contributed to the survey. Your views and opinions help shape how we think and what we do. We want to continue reaching out to the black student community to better understand what unique challenges they face and build programmes that supports them through their personal and professional development. Today is all about sharing best practices with other ACS executives, learning from the inspirational leaders and connecting with 6 leading employers. We want to thank our host (Google) and all the wonderful partners (Bank of England, Barclays, Deutsche Bank, Google, PA Consulting and Simmons & Simmons) who have supported the ACS Project in the past and present. Today wont be possible without their continue support and partnership. We implore you to use todays event as an opportunity to dig deep and come up with awesome concepts that will enable you deliver even better to your members in the new academic year. Most importantly, remember to enjoy the event.
