Officers gather for Police Unity Tour
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
More than 100 people gathered
at Fullerton Memorial Park on
Thursday, May 9, to honor local
fallen officers before making a
200-mile journey to the National
Law Enforcement Officers Me-
morial in Washington, D.C.
As part of the Police Unity
Tour, officers from Moorestown
and more than 100 local police de-
partments stopped by area me-
morials dedicated to fallen offi-
cers.
The annual tradition began in
1997 to help raise awareness of of-
ficers who have died in the line of
duty.
Since then, the event has
grown, reaching more than 1,800
riders.
According to Andy Cheney,
PUT executive board president,
there were only 14 officers in the
southern New Jersey chapter
when the organization began. It
has grown to more than 300 par-
ticipants, with eight chapters.
Police Sgt. Richard Gunning
was the first of Moorestown to
join the ride in 2007 with the
northern New Jersey Chapter.
Patrolman George Huble joined a
year later.
Huble said this is the first year
Moorestown rode with the south-
ern New Jersey chapter because
please see NINE, page 2
the group was visiting local me-
morials. According to Huble, the
Moorestown group has grown.
Officer Bryan Wright reached
his fourth year, while officers
John Rulli and Ryan Carr tagged
along for the first time.
Nine fallen local officers were
honored the day before the group
made the journey to D.C. Two of-
ficers served in Moorestown.
Frank Fullerton was killed in
the line of duty in 1979 in an ex-
change of gunfire during a po-
lice chase.
He was wounded during the
shooting and died one month
later. The park was dedicated in
his honor on May 26, 1980.
Patrolman George Clayton
Ayres was killed in a car acci-
dent while on patrol in 1958. He
served approximately one year
with the department.
Fullertons son, Frank Jr., his
daughter-in-law Kelly and other
family members attended the
ceremony.
A gold rose was presented to
the family as a token of apprecia-
tion.
It was very overwhelming.
When they told us, I didnt real-
ize it would be this many people
riding, Kelly said.
Each officer participating
must raise a minimum of $1,750.
The funds raised go to the Na-
tional Law Enforcement Officers
Memorial and Museum.
Over the years, PUT has raised
more than $12 million, according
to its website.
The motto is We Ride for
Those Who Died, and no matter
how hard it gets, we are able to
ride bikes.
The guys who are on the wall
are unable to do that, so we just
kind of suck it up. You work
through weather and pain. You
get a cramp you drink water. You
do what you can to get down
there, Huble said.

Graduate receives
science fellowship
Arvind Kalidindi, a
Moorestown High School gradu-
ate (Class of 2010) recently re-
ceived the prestigious National
Science Foundation Graduate Re-
search Fellowship, which is
awarded to the nation's top sci-
ence and engineering students in-
terested in pursuing graduate
study. The award fully funds his
graduate education.
He will graduate from Drexel
University this June in mechani-
cal engineering, spending three
years at Drexel. He will begin his
Ph.D work at MIT in the fall.
Senior to play football
for Fairleigh Dickinson
Brandon Barlow has commit-
ted to Fairleigh Dickinson Uni-
versity. Barlow, a defensive end
for the Moorestown Quakers in
2013, will continue his football ca-
reer as a Devil for Fairleigh Dick-
inson University in Madison.
The second-team All-Confer-
ence defensive end recently made
his commitment.
Eighth grader receives
annual award of $1,000
OLGC eighth grader Julia
Kuzy is the class of 1975 scholar-
ship recipient of a $1,000 annual
award for four years at Holy
Cross High School.
This scholarship is awarded
by the members of the class of
1975 to that student that epito-
mizes the Holy Cross Lancer spir-
it of selfless service, the Catholic
attributes of servitude and com-
munity outreach, said Kate Zen-
tar, a development assistant at
Holy Cross. This future Lancer
is a student that is not only well
rounded in their educational, ath-
letic and civic contributions to
their school but to others
throughout their community.
They are the givers of their
class. The student that does that
small random act of kindness
and never expects an award or
recognition. That is the Lancer
who will always return to Holy
Cross High School and call it
Home as those in the Class of
1975 so often do.

Burlington County freeholders
announced recently that all coun-
ty parks would go smoke and to-
bacco-free beginning on May 31 in
honor of World No Tobacco Day.
On May 31 every year, the
World Health Organization and
partners world-wide recognize
World No Tobacco Day to high-
light the health risks associated
with the use of tobacco and to
promote quitting smoking. Ac-
cording to WHO, tobacco use is
the single most preventable cause
of death globally and is currently
responsible for killing one in 10
adults worldwide.
Recently the Tobacco-Free for a
Healthy New Jersey group
reached out to the county to con-
sider making the county smoke-
free. This group has approached
several counties and municipali-
ties in the region to go smoke-free
as well.
May is Clean Air Month,
which makes this decision to go
smoke-free even more fitting,
said Freeholder Joanne
Schwartz, liaison to the health de-
partment. Clean Air Month is
supported by the American Lung
Association and is designed to ed-
ucate people about the impact
clean air has on their lives and
encourage people to take positive
steps to help improve air quality.
On behalf of the American
Cancer Society, Easter Division, I
am particularly pleased to con-
gratulate the Burlington County
Board of Freeholders for their
commitment to improve the pub-
lic's health by making all of the
county parks Smoke Free, Fred
M. Jacobs, MD, JD, CMO, Ameri-
can Cancer Society, eastern divi-
sion said.
This sends a strong message
to the youth of the region that the
elected leaders of their communi-
ty do not endorse smoking in pub-
lic places under their jurisdic-
tion. Such actions by communi-
ties across our state, supported by
the American Cancer Society,
continue to increase awareness of
the dangers of cigarette use and
hasten the day when this public
health menace is no longer a
threat to any of the citizens of
New Jersey.
Signs will be put in all of the
county parks announcing that the
county will be smoke and tobacco
free. County park rangers will ed-
ucate park guests about the coun-
ty parks going smoke- and tobac-
co-free and will encourage visi-
tors to be respectful of the new
policy.

T
hree years ago, back in 2010,
Gov. Christie won a political
battle, enacting a 2 percent cap
on municipal tax levies. The law re-
quired towns to limit their municipal
budget increases to a maximum of 2
percent, down from 4 percent, lest they
be subject to public vote.
As is the norm, legislators argued
over whether the law would have any
real effect on property taxes, or
whether it was just another way of an-
gling and passing blame onto predeces-
sors.
State data released last week would
say that Christies property tax reform
is indeed working.
While the average residential prop-
erty tax bill rose to a record high of
$7,885 last year, it increased only 1.6
percent. The states Community Af-
fairs Department said that the average
homeowner paid $126 more in property
taxes last year, which represents the
smallest increase in at least five years.
CA Commissioner Richard Consta-
ble is a believer: By any measure, the
property-tax reforms have been a re-
sounding success.
Were not ready to jump headfirst
into the Kool-Aid like Constable just
yet, but we also believe that at least a
small part of the leveling off in tax in-
creases is because of the property tax
cap.
Residents of the Garden State still
pay the highest average real-estate
levies. Christies property-tax reform
was never going to fix that problem in
this short of a time frame, but its a
good start thats showing progress al-
ready.
What the 2 percent cap does is keep
local governments in check, with a rea-
sonable limit on increases. It forces
local councils, committees, commis-
sions and school boards to take a sec-
ond look at expenses and cut the excess
wherever possible. It forces these enti-
ties to investigate shared services and
share resources.
In a word, it forces accountability.
No council, committee, commission
or school board wants the fate of their
budget to rest in the hands of voters.
School boards disliked the practice
when it was a standard, and they
would all dislike it if it were to go to a
vote again.
Is Christies 2-percent cap the be-all,
end-all of property tax reform in New
Jersey? Who knows? But it is a step in
the right direction.
Is Christies tax cap working?
The data would say yes, at least on the surface
Your thoughts
Is Gov. Christies property tax reform
working? Or is it all just political smoke-
and-mirrors? Let your voice be heard
through a letter to the editor.
Clerks office completes mailing of ballots
Burlington County Clerk Tim Tyler an-
nounced recently that the clerks office has
completed its initial mailing of primary
election ballots. Any ballot requested for
the June 4 primary election before April 25
should be received in the coming days.
If a voter does not receive an expected
ballot, they should call the clerks office as
soon as possible, Tyler said. We are able
to check their application status and have
many more options available now to make
sure an applicant has the ability to cast
their ballot than we will have when elec-
tion day is right around the corner.
Voters still have ample time to apply for
a primary election vote by mail ballot. In
order to have a ballot mailed to them, vot-
ers need to be sure their completed vote by
mail application is received in the county
clerks office by May, 28. After that, voters
may apply in person or by authorized mes-
senger in the clerks office until 3 p.m. the
day before the election.
Voters are reminded that they must have
the assistor portion (section 11) of the vote
by mail application filled out if they re-
ceive any help in completing the applica-
tion. A voter may select one or both of two
options for future vote by mail ballots in
section 10 of the application. Option A en-
titles the voter to receive a ballot for all
elections in the same calendar year of
their application. This option must be re-
newed every year by completing a new ap-
plication. Option B entitles a voter to re-
ceive a ballot for all future general elec-
tions. This option does not expire until the
voter requests they no longer be sent.
For voters in Bordentown City ballots
are also in the mail for the non-partisan
municipal election. Bordentown City vot-
ers should be aware that they might re-
ceive two vote by mail ballots at about the
same time. If they wish to cast a vote in
both the municipal and primary elections
they must open, vote, and return both bal-
lots.
The vote by mail application is available
by selecting Election Services on the
county clerks website www.co.burling-
ton.nj.us/countyclerk. Voters may also
have an application mailed to them by call-
ing the clerks office Elections section at
(609) 265-5229.

From birth to adulthood, it is
extremely important that we take
good care of our teeth, said

rector Joe Donnelly. The oral
health care we receive and how
we take care of our teeth, play a
big role in our overall well-being.
New Jersey-licensed dentists will

Children without dental insur-

For those who have yet to see
the Vietnam Memorial Wall in
Washington, D.C., you might get a
chance to see a replica without
leaving the state.
The Wall that Heals a travel-
ing replica of the Vietnam Memo-
rial Wall is making its way to an
open field in Moorestown, behind
the Mt. Laurel YMCA on June 5.
Dave Walters, Moorestown resi-
dent and Army vet who served in
Vietnam, said, on June 4, there
will be an escort traveling east on
Main Street from Camden Avenue
to Centerton Road at the Y.
The wall is made up of 25 pan-
els spanning 250 feet. It contains
58,492 names, Walters said. The
wall is supposed to heal open
wounds left behind from the war.
Numerous Vietnam veterans
have never been to the wall be-
cause of flashbacks and post-trau-
matic stress disorder.
They have too many good bud-
dies lost. Its difficult for them,
and thats part of what it is. Its a
healing, Walters said. Hopefully,
they will be able to come out and
talk to other vets that have been
there and will go up to the wall
with them.

Memorial wall open from
June 5 through the 9th
Veterans from different wars,
such as the Korean War, World
War II and even Operation Iraqi
Freedom, come to the wall and
create a sense of camaraderie.
The average citizen who visits
the wall shows a connection to the
war.
Walters said he has visited the
wall when it traveled to other
towns around the country.
According to The Wall that
Heals website, three people from
Moorestown George S. Yohnn-
son, Walter Phillip Seel Jr. and
Roger A. Ross were killed in ac-
tion.
Walters said its the reaction he
witnessed in other towns that
wanted him to bring the wall to
the area.
Its like it brings out honor
and reaction from the people in
the town because everybody from
that town has someone on that
wall. The people that have gone to
the wall I think are amazed to see
all the names in one spot, he
said.
There is an educational aspect
to having the wall make a trip to
the area. Walters said he doesnt
think the Vietnam War is dis-
cussed in the classroom as much
as other wars. But the wall would
bring a visual representation of
the war and teach not only chil-
dren, but also adults about the his-
tory.
As for the turnout, Walters said
he couldnt put an exact figure on
the number of people who will
show up. However, he is hoping
for a crowd.
Im hoping we dont have
enough room to walk, he said.
The opening ceremony, the day
after the escort through
Moorestown, will be on Wednes-
day, June 5 at 5:30 p.m. Walters
said the wall would be set up
around 9 a.m. The wall would re-
main open to the public 24/7 until
after the closing ceremony on
June 9 at 2 p.m.
Volunteers for security duty,
visitor assistance and motorcycle
escorts are in need. For more in-
formation or to sign up to volun-
teer, visit www.patriotconnec-
tions.org/vietnamwall/.

Friends School presents three
Alumni Association Awards
On Friday evening May 3,
Moorestown Friends School pre-
sented three Alumni Association
Awards at its Dinner Among
Friends as part of Alumni Week-
end activities.
The MFS Alumni Associations
Alice Paul Merit Award was pre-
sented to MFS alumna Deborah
Miller Hull 63 in recognition of
her outstanding service to the ad-
vancement of Friends education.
Hull is currently serving her sec-
ond term as clerk of Earlham Col-
lege, and has also served, since
1981, on the School Committee of
Friends Central School in
Philadelphia. Hull graduated
from MFS in 1963 and continued
to Earlham College and later re-
ceived a master of education de-
gree from West Chester Universi-
ty. She worked in various capaci-
ties at BRS Information Services,
served as vice president of sales
and marketing at the Institute for
Scientific Information, and also
served as general manager of
ERM Computer Services. Hull
joined the start-up Ovid Technolo-
gies in 1990 and helped grow the
company from 25 employees to 450
in a 10-year period. Later, she
served as president and CEO of
Medcases Inc., until April 2004.
Hull and her husband, Reagan
Hull (63), reside on Daufuskie Is-
land, S.C.
Camden attorney Brian Turner
(98) received the MFS Young
Alumni Award. At MFS, Turner
was a four-year varsity basketball
player and captain his junior and
senior years. After graduating
from MFS, Turner received a de-
gree in sociology from Rutgers,
Camden and in 2006, he obtained a
law degree from there as well.
After a stint with the Homeland
Security Agency, today he is a
Camden assistant city attorney,
and also has a private general
practice on Market Street. In
April 2012, Camden Mayor Dana
L. Redd appointed Turner to the
Camden City School Board. Turn-
er was also on the founding board
of the Charter School for Global
Leadership in Camden, before re-
signing to join the school board.
Philanthropists Thomas and
Deborah Whitesell were present-
ed with the MFS Alumni Associa-
tion Service Award. The White-
sells, who reside in Florida and
Moorestown, were honored for
more than 30 years of leadership
at MFS as parents, alumni par-
ents and grandparents. At MFS,
the Whitesells helped to organize
some of the schools first parent
council auctions.
