Abstract An environmental capacity model for the petroleum hydrocarbon pollutions (PHs) in Jiaozhou Bay is constructed based on field surveys, mesocosm, and parallel laboratory experiments. Simulated results of PHs seasonal successions in 2003 match the field surveys of Jiaozhou Bay resaonably well with a highest value in July. The Monte Carlo analysis confirms that the variation of PHs concentration significantly correlates with the river input. The water body in the bay is reasonably subjected to self-purification processes, such as volatilization to the atmosphere, biodegradation by microorganism, and transport to the Yellow Sea by water exchange. The environmental capacity of PHs in Jiaozhou Bay is 1500 tons per year IF the seawater quality criterion (Grade I/II, 0. 05 mgL-1) in the region is to be satisfied. The contribution to self-purification by volatilization, biodegradation, and transport to the Yellow Sea accounts for 48%, 28%, and 23%, respectively, which make these three processes the main ways of PHs purification in Jiaozhou Bay. 2013 Science Press, Ocean University of China and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg. 2 Bivariate statistical model for calculating phosphorus input loads to the river from point and nonpoint sources Chen, D.-J., Sun, S.-Y., Jia, Y.-N., Chen, J.-B., L, J. 2013 Huanjing Kexue/Environmental Science 34 (1) , pp. 84-90 Chen, D.-J.ab , Sun, S.-Y.a, Jia, Y.-N.c, Chen, J.-B.a, L, J.ab a College of Environmental Science and Resources, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310058, China b Key Laboratory of Environment Remediation and Ecological Health, Ministry of Education, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310058, China c Environmental Science Research and Design Institute of Zhejiang Province, Hangzhou 310007, China View references (26)

Abstract Based on the hydrological difference between the point source (PS) and nonpoint source (NPS) pollution processes and the major influencing mechanism of in-stream retention processes, a bivariate statistical model was developed for relating river phosphorus load to river water flow rate and temperature. Using the calibrated and validated four model coefficients from in-stream monitoring data, monthly phosphorus input loads to the river from PS and NPS can be easily determined by the model. Compared to current hydrological methods, this model takes the in-stream retention process and the upstream inflow term into consideration; thus it improves the knowledge on phosphorus pollution processes and can meet the requirements of both the district-based and watershed-based water quality management patterns. Using this model, total phosphorus (TP) input load to the Changle River in Zhejiang Province was calculated. Results indicated that annual total TP input load was (54.611.9) ta-1 in 2004- 2009, with upstream water inflow, PS and NPS contributing to 5%1%, 12%3% and 83%3%, respectively. The cumulative NPS TP input load during the high flow periods (i. e. , June, July, August and September) in summer accounted for 50%9% of the annual amount, increasing the alga blooming risk in downstream water bodies. Annual in-stream TP retention load was (4.50.1) ta-1 and occupied 9%2% of the total input load. The cumulative in-stream TP retention load during the summer periods (i. e. , June-September) accounted for 55%2% of the annual amount, indicating that in-stream retention function plays an important role in seasonal TP transport and transformation processes. This bivariate statistical model only requires commonly available in-stream monitoring data (i. e. , river phosphorus load, water flow rate and temperature) with no requirement of special software knowledge; thus it offers researchers and managers with a cost-effective tool for quantifying TP pollution processes in both district and watershed scales. In this study the comparative analysis of occurrence, concentrations and transfer of twelve dioxin-like PCBs in the bottom sediment collected f mfv d v d h Rv ( h h p f h y f d entral Poland) were determined using isotopically labelled internal standards and HRGC/HRMS. The total concentration of analyzed PCBs ranged from 79.75 to 3,741.34 ng/kg d.w. with maximum concentrations in the last two reservoirs (3,741.34 and 2,594.36 ng/kg d.w., respectively). Reservoirs situated at the beginning of the cascade system showed concentrations several times lower: 694.32 in the first, 292.15 in the second and 79.75 ng/kg d.w. in the third reservoir. The obtained data showed moderate or strong correlations between PCB concentration in sediments and environmental conditions of the water column: pH (-0.81), conductivity (0.94), mineral suspended solids (0.82), total and organic suspended solids (0.61), total phosphorus (-0.83) and total nitrogen (0.67). Furthermore, these parameters could have played an indirect role in PCB reduction through the stimulation of phytoplankton production. This in consequence might have influenced PCB pathways in reservoirs through changes in their sedimentation, transport and degradation processes as significant relations between PCBs and chlorophyll a content was found (0.64). The results showed that seasonal difference of self-purification of permanganate index, total nitrogen (TN), ammonium (NH 4 +-N), nitrate (NO 3 --N), total phosphorus (TP), chlorophyll (Chl-a) in small shallow lakes were remarkable. Effects of self-purification were better in spring and winter, and were worse in summer by NH 4 +-N and NO 3 --N and in autumn by TP and Chl-a. Organic pollution was light, TN and TP pollution were seriously in four seasons. Concentrations of TN and TP brought a well condition to algae growth, and lakes were eutrification easily by the limiting factor of phosphorus. Concentrations of Chl-a were showed that lakes were eutrophic in summer or autumn and mesotrophic in winter or spring. Growth and blooms of phytoplankton impacted water quality and self-purification of lakes. Species and quantity of aquatic plants were the main factors to affect the change of pH and dissolved oxygen (DO), and loss of fertilizer and domestic wastewater were the main reasons for high nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in lakes. Organic nitrogen was the main portion of TN by using excessive organic fertilizer in summer, NO 3 --N was the main portion in other seasons. The principal component analysis result showed that the three principal components of self-purification ability were phytoplankton factor (water temperature, pH, permanganate index and Chl-a), farm drainage factor (pH, DO and TN), nutrient factor (TN and TP). The cluster analysis result showed that the water quality of four seasons in 11 sampling sites of three lakes could be divided into two categories: first, in spring, autumn and winter; second, in summer. This was caused by the temperature changes and agricultural drainage. Water temperature and pH were used to calculate the concentrations of permanganate index, TN, TP, Chl-a by linear equations, which improved the quick prediction ability in locale. The long-term series of water quality and river flow data over 20 years were analyzed in order to study the impact of dam construction and operation on water quality and water self-purification capacity of these different river segments. From pre-dam period to the first 7 years after Manwan Dam had been accomplished, the water quality of Manwan Reservoir became worse due to the accumulation of pollutants, and then to the next 5 years the water quality became better in virtue of the water self-purification of the reservoir. The cooperative operation of Manwan and Dachaoshan Dam had cumulatively positive impacts on water quality of their belowdam segment but no impacts on that of downstream flowing segment. From pre-dam period to the first 7 years after the closure of Manwan Dam, the water self-purification capacity of Xiaowan-Manwan segment for BOD5, CODMn and NH3N decreased. Also, the water self-purification capacity of ManwanDachaoshan segment for BOD5 and CODMn decreased but for NH3-N increased. However, the water self-purification capacity of Jinghong-Ganlanba segment changed contrary to Manwan-Dachaoshan segment. In general, the construction of Manwan Dam negatively affected the water self-purification capacity of reservoir and below-dam segment but impose little impact on that of downstream flowing

segment. This study suggested that it is necessary to pay attention to the effect of complicated temporal and spatial characteristics of dam on aquatic ecosystem.
