BOAT ORDERS ARE AS FOLLWS:

Ship Crutches:- The oarsman ship the crutches through the hole in the crutch plate on the gunwale.

Unship Poppets:- This order is given in the cutters instead

of ship crutches and the crew remove or unship the poppets from the gunwale openings and rowlocks.

Toss Oars:- The oars man puts the loom of the oar between
the legs and puts the oar upright with the blade in the air. The oars blade must lie in the fore and aft direction of the boat. The coxwain also simultaneously ships his tiller.

Haul her ahead and pass the painter aft:- The bowman pulls the toggle out of the painter, hauls on it and then passes aft, so that coxswain can haul the painter. The bowman then takes up the boat hook and pushes the bow of the boat away from the ship. The coxswain also puts the tiller towards the ship so that boat gets away from the ship side. Shove Off:- Push the ship side with the help of boat hook and gets away from the shipside. Down oars Stbd/Port:- The oarsman lower their oars outboard resting on the crutches with the blade parallel to the water. Stand By:- Upon this order the oarsman gets ready to pull with the oarsman leaning aft and blade of the oars forward.

Give Way together (Give way stbd/port):- The oarsman pull together taking their timing from the first thwart oarsman also called strokes. Hold Water (Hold water stbd/port):-The oarsman dips the blade of the oars vertically into the water keeping the oars still and at right angles to the boat. Back Water: - The faster way to turn the boat. Oars: - When it is decided to rest the crew of the boat this order is given and the crew holds the oars horizontal and parallel to the water with its blade flat. Bows: - This order is given when the boat has nearly reaches its destination. The bowman gives one stroke and stops pulling and stands in the bows with boat hook ready to attend his duties. Way Enough:- Given in whalers the oarsman take one stroke and stop pulling. Toss oars:- It has same meaning as explained earlier. The order is given before the boat comes alongside.

Boat oars:- Upon this order the oarsman lay the oars on the side benches with the blade forward. Starting from aft to forward. Never leave crutches shipped when the boat is alongside or made fast to boom. Make fast the Painter:- The bowman puts down his boat hook and makes the painter fast.
