One of the most important medical books of its time was written by the physician Ali al-Husayn Abd

Allah Ibn Sina (also known as Avicenna). His massive manuscript, called the Laws of Medicine, was completed around 1030 AD and translated into Latin in the 12th Century. This encyclopaedia of medicine contained five books detailing the formulation of medicines, diagnosis of disorders, general medicine and detailed therapies. It continued to be a great influence in the development of medicine in medieval Europe for hundreds of years. Medicine is the science and art of healing. It is a science because people learn it by studying and doing experiments. It is an art because it depends on the way doctors and other workers use their skills to heal people. People who visit doctors are called patients. Doctors do three important things. First, they make a diagnosis <<dy uhg NOH sihs>>. They figure out the cause of a patient's illness or injury.

Second, doctors treat, or help, patients. They prescribe, or order, medicines. They may also do surgery or order other treatments. Third, doctors help prevent disease. They give vaccinations <<vak sihn AY shuns>> against some diseases so that people will not catch them. They try to find and treat diseases early to keep them from getting worse. That is why doctors want people to get regular checkups.

Doctors make decisions about the care a patient gets. Many doctors can take care of most of a patient's needs. For serious illnesses, they send patients to a specialist. Specialists have training in a certain field, such as allergies or heart disease. Most doctors care for people in their offices. They may work alone or in a group. Doctors also work in hospitals and in clinics. People who want to be doctors take science and mathematics courses in college. Then they go to medical school. After they graduate, they work in a hospital and train under experienced doctors. Then they pass examinations before they can take care of people on their own.

Herbal treatments These have been used throughout the world since prehistoric times. In the past century, modern scientific medicine has become the main source of treatment. However recently, herbal treatments and traditional medicine have become increasingly popular as they are seen to have fewer negative side-effects. Acupressure This is a very ancient technique, still popular today, in which the healer presses hard on certain nerves in order to relieve pain. It seems a bit like a Chinese method of healing but possibly also has its origins in Ibn Sina's understanding that the perception of pain in the muscles is caused by the nerves. Wasm A treatment called wasm is also used to cure many diseases. It is a very old remedy but it is still used by some people today. It is a bit like acupuncture but instead of using needles on specific parts of the body wasm uses a hot iron rod.
