DOLLAR STRETCHER TIPS SHINY STAINLESS Pour lemon juice into a spray bottle. Use it with a sprinkling of baking soda to shine stainless steel sinks. -S. THE TWO MINUTE GROCERY BREAK After we have filled up our grocery cart with the products that we want to buy, we do a two minute break exercise. Before we go to the checkout, we go through each item that we have put in the cart. We take a moment to analyze whether or not we need it right now. If the answer is no, then it goes out of our shopping cart. This exercise only takes us a moment and saves us from buying unnecessary stuff. -S. SUGAR SCRUB During the holiday season, a coworker bought some sugar scrub at a specialty shop in the mall. It was wonderful for softening hands, elbows, and knees, but it cost $10! I discovered that by mixing enough granulated sugar with baby oil to make a thick paste, I had the same thing and it worked just as well for less money. I store it in a tightly covered container or even a zipper bag. -L.

Create A Delicious Meal From The Garden In Your Pantry (NAPSA)-Looking to add some color to your dinner table? Decorate your plate with canned fruits and vegetables, which are packed with nutrition and provide garden quality all year long. For your next family gathering, impress your guests with this Grilled Chicken & Peach Kabobs recipe. Perfect for indoor or outdoor entertaining, it's a tasty main dish that's filled with nutrition and ready to be enjoyed in minutes. Grilled Chicken & Peach Kabobs Prep Time: 15 min Cook Time: 20 min, Serves: 4 Ingredients 2 Tbsp. Dijon mustard 3 Tbsp. canola oil, divided 12 tsp. dried rosemary Salt, to taste 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breast halves, cut into 24 cubes (about 1-inch each) 1 green bell pepper, cut into 24 (1-inch) pieces 1 small red onion, cut into eight wedges, layers separated 2 cans (15.25 oz. each) Del Monte Lite Peach Halves, drained and peaches cut in half 16 (10-inch) bamboo skewers Directions 1. Whisk together mustard, 2 Tbsp. oil, rosemary and salt, if desired, in a medium bowl. Add the chicken and stir until well coated. 2. Use 2 skewers at a time to make turning food on grill pan easier. On each double-skewer, alternate 3 pieces each of chicken, bell peppers and onion and 2 pieces of peach. 3. Heat a grill pan over medium heat. Brush the grill with the remaining 1 Tbsp. oil, and cook the kabobs 4 minutes. Gently turn (if peaches stick to the grill, slide a spatula underneath to gently release). Cook 4 more minutes or until chicken is no longer pink inside. 4. Serve with cooked plain or flavored couscous, if desired. NOTE: To boost the flavor of couscous, prepare with peach juice instead of water. Reserve juice when draining peaches into a glass measuring cup. If needed, add additional water to equal the total amount of liquid required, and prepare couscous according to package directions. Make Healthy Eating A Family Tradition by Chef Nikki Shaw (NAPSA)-A legacy of healthy eating can be one of the best gifts you give your family. Like traditions, healthy recipes can be passed down from generation to generation. Choose the right ones and you'll provide great opportunities for your family to live longer, healthier lives. The Network for a Healthy California (Network) offers a number of tips and resources to help take charge of your family's health. By providing families with healthy recipes, the Network empowers everyone to pass down traditions of health. Try adding a few healthy and tasty recipes to your family's legacy, starting with the delicious Oven Fried Chicken with Summer Squash from the Network's Soulful Recipes-Building Healthy Traditions cookbook: Oven Fried Chicken with Summer Squash This recipe adds a healthy twist to a traditional meal by baking instead of frying chicken. 1 cup finely crushed cornflakes 14 teaspoon salt 12 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 teaspoon onion powder 1 teaspoon garlic powder 12 cup evaporated skim milk 1 pound chicken breasts, skin emoved, cut into 6 pieces Non-stick cooking spray 12 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 2 medium zucchinis, cut into short strips 3 medium yellow squash, cut into short strips 1 teaspoon dried oregano Place an oven rack in the middle of the oven. Preheat oven to 350F.
In a small bowl, combine cornflakes, salt, ground black pepper, onion powder and garlic powder. Place evaporated milk in a separate bowl. Dip chicken pieces in milk and roll in crushed cornflake mixture, lightly coating both sides. Spray a roasting pan with non-stick cooking spray and arrange chicken pieces on the pan in a single layer. Bake for 30 minutes. While the chicken is baking, heat oil in a medium skillet over medium-high
heat. Saut garlic in oil for about 3 minutes. Add zucchini, yellow squash and oregano; continue to cook until tender, about 5 to 7 minutes. Serve each piece of chicken with 1 cup of zucchini and yellow squash mixture. Makes 6 servings. This recipe is lower in fat be_cause the chicken is baked, not fried. It's also lower in both fat and cholesterol because it uses chicken breasts instead of thighs. Remove the skin before coating the chicken
to reduce fat even more. Serve it with a side dish of sauted squash and zucchini to ensure your family gets closer to the recommended goal of making half their plate fruits and vegetables! Celebrity Chef Nikki Shaw hosts "Today's Flavor" on Sirius XM and was a contestant on the Food Network's search for "The Next Food Network Star." SIZE DOES MATTER - FOR A PERFECT PLANT PROFILE By: Colleen Cavagna Cornell Cooperative Extension Educator and Master Gardeners: Debbie MacCrea, David Schaut, and Terry Violet Often when we are browsing the flower catalogs or strolling through the nurseries, we find ourselves attracted to flowers that are tall to extra tall. Just drive around and you will see how much we love hollyhocks, delphiniums, dahlias, sunflowers, and other beautiful giants. Large, showy blooms are a delight to the eye, but we sometimes forget about small and medium plants that fill in the front and in-between areas of our taller plants. So, when you are shopping for plants this spring, dont forget the smaller ones; both perennials and annuals. These specimens can be just as stunning in flower, and will break up the profile of your landscape with their different foliage color, shapes and textures. Reminder- If you put a sun plant in shade to partial shade, it might still grow, but it will not grow as robustly. So if the plant normally grows in full sun to the height of 4, in the shade it might only grow to 2 and not bloom as profusely. Another thing to keep in mind, there are many different varieties within a flower family. While one Artemisia might be considered a low growing plant another could grow to 3 tall. If you are looking for a medium to small plant for filling in and giving vertical layers to your flower beds, double-check to make sure that the variety you are purchasing is shorter than the plant you are going to place it in front of . other than that, they have little to do. As head of the family, dont they deserve more? Here are some ideas to include and honor Nana and Papa in your wedding. While younger family members are often asked to be in the wedding, that does not mean you cannot ask your grandparents to step in. Perhaps your grandfather would like to be an usher and welcome and seat all of the guests. Perhaps your grandmother would like to show off her chops and be your pianist. Heck, your grandparents might get a kick out of walking down the aisle together as a groomsman and bridesmaid. If your grandparents would prefer to stay out of the limelight, you should respect their wishes and find some other way to honor them. Here are some suggestions: Wear a replica of

Greener, Leaner Choices
By Tresa Erickson Flowers have long been part of the exchange of marriage vows, whether the backdrop to a lavish wedding or a simple bouquet in the brides hands. While a boutonniere and a bouquet wont break the budget, a mass of flowers can. Flowers can be one of the most expensive facets of a wedding. Generally the more you have in your wedding, the more you can expect the tab to be. Thats why some brides opt not to have flowers in their wedding, have very few or choose artificial blooms over fresh ones. If you long to have fresh flowers but dont have a lot of cash to spare, do not despair. There are ways to cut back. Remember that less is more Opt for fewer fresh flowers in your wedding and use them where they will have the most impact, like in the boutonnieres and bouquets. If you must have a lot of flowers in your wedding, use a combination of artificial and fresh flowers, and again, place the fresh flowers where they will have the most impact.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
They could even serve as their wedding gift to you. Forget container rentals and purchases. Borrow vases, pots, baskets and other containers for your wedding centerpieces-just make sure you return them in good condition and in a timely manner. If you must buy flowers, buy them in season locally and save on the costs of packaging and transportation. Then shift them around to serve dual purposes. Use your wedding bouquet for a centerpiece on the cake table and request guests pluck petals from the table centerpieces to send you off on your honeymoon. Purchase wisely Buy only the flowers you need. If your friend is willing to give you some blooms from her garden, find out how many. Then make your order with your florist-the earlier, the better. Dont wait until the last minute. Order well beforehand and buy in bulk to get the best deals.

Hours: Mon.-Fri. 8-7pm, Sat. 8-5pm, Sun. 10-5pm dreams until you can afford it. Wait six months or a year to book the trip. Youll have more cash to spare and more time to find the best deals. Go during the off-season Off-season prices are far cheaper than peak season prices. Schedule your honeymoon during the offseason, and to save more cash, consider going to a less popular destination. The rates will be cheaper, and there will be less people to contend with. Book way in advance Generally, the earlier you book your honeymoon, the cheaper the rates will be. Start looking for a destination long before your expected departure date and shop around for the best deals. Cut costs where you can You dont have to go all out to have a good time on your honeymoon. Think about your plans and find ways to save. Choose less expensive accommodations, especially if you intend to be out and about much of the day. Pack lunches instead of eating out. Take advantage of all free or low-cost activities. Stay close to home If you are really short on cash and cant afford to go away, stay in. Check out the deals in your area and arrange for a mini staycation. Book a room at an inexpensive hotel and spend the day checking out attractions and activities youve never had time for. If you cant afford a hotel room, stay at home and have a candlelit dinner. It doesnt really matter where you are as long as you are together. Honeymoons dont have to break the bank. You can still have fun and celebrate the beginning of your life together on a shoestring budget. It just takes some advance planning and creative thinking.
Think outside of the box Not keen on artificial flowers? Skip them. Supplement your fresh floral arrangements with inexpensive fruit, vegetables, nuts, pinecones, shells, willow branches and other offerings of Mother Nature. You might even be able to pluck some of these from your own backyard. Borrow some plants from your green thumb friends and scatter them throughout the reception site. Pur-chase some inexpensive potted plants, use them as centerpieces and ask guests to take them home as favors. Reduce, reuse and recycle Got a friend with a lovely garden? Ask to use some blooms from their garden in your wedding.

Honeymoons On A Dime
By Tresa Erickson While some newlyweds can still afford to cap off their big day in grand style with a trip for two to someplace exotic, there are many that cant. Once theyve paid for the wedding, there is little left for a honeymoon. Fortunately, you can still have a great honeymoon on a shoestring budget. Heres how. DOLLAR STRETCHER TIPS AN EVENING OUT We live on a tight budget, which includes little frills in the food and entertainment areas of our lives. For a romantic evening out with my husband, I send the three kids off for the night to family or friends, redo the dining area of our house to get the romantic-restaurant effect, and cook a gourmet meal. Since we normally dont eat anything fancy, I try to make a traditionally expensive meal. I use all the recommended ingredients, but I dont pay anywhere near the restaurant price. I set up candles in the living room and then we settle down to watch a movie Ive borrowed from a friend or the library. One of the big keys to this being successful is unplugging the phone and keeping the lights down. This really helps you move away from reality. After the movie, we enjoy a long shower/massage before bed and this all leads to a late morning wakeup. Its simple, relatively inexpensive, and totally romantic. -Kate

You may not always be together when these events take place. Discuss with your household members what to do in the event of an emergency and choose two places to meet- one right outside of the home in case of a sudden emergency like a house fire and one outside of your neighborhood in case you cannot return home. Create a plan on what to do if you have to evacuate. Before an emergency have a route and destination planned out. Red Cross apps for smart phones can provide knowledge on what to do during an emergency, where to find shelters, and how to plan an evacuation plan. Visit www.redcross.org/prepare/mobile-apps for more information. Finally, learn the types of disasters or emergencies that may occur in your area. These events can range from those affecting only you and your family or to the entire community. Know how the local authorities will notify you during a disaster. Several years ago, a passenger in my almost brand-new car got sick and urped in my car. I tried everything I could think of to get the smell out and nothing worked. Desperation was setting in and I called a detail shop to see about having the carpet professionally cleaned. The guy I talked to told me to take four or five lemons, cut them up in quarters, and squeeze the juice all over the affected area. Then he told me to toss the rinds under the seat, leaving them there until theyd completely dried up. He said hed done this in a car in which a cooler full of raw shrimp had tipped over. I figured it couldnt hurt to try! Within a very short time, the smell was gone! And the lemon juice did not damage my carpet. -Laura J

Is the grass always greener to you? I talked with a mother of two preschool children and asked her how it was going. Well. she said, my two-year-old has a stomach virus and is really pitiful right now. Im sorry, I said, I remember what a trying time that can be. Keeping his older sister away from him is part of the challenge, she told me. I dont want her to catch it, she said. Thats a good idea, I said. All four of us had a horrific stomach virus once... and with only three bathrooms. Well, she said, she wishes she had the stomach virus. Why? I asked. I tried to tell her she doesnt want it, the mother said, but she says she wants it because then her little brother would have to stay away from her. The grass is always greener, isnt it? Until you get over to the other side of the hill and discover the reality of living there. Love the life you have and listen to it. Focus on and filter for the positive on your side of the hill so you can work positive and live positive today.

RED CROSS HELPING OKLA. TORNADO VICTIMS ENCOURAGES ALL TO BE PREPARED The American Red Cross is working around the clock to help people in Oklahoma after Mondays devastating tornadoes with shelters, food, water and supplies, and more volunteers, supplies and equipment are moving into the area today. Our thoughts and sympathy are with all those impacted by these horrific tornadoes, said Trevor Riggen, vice president of Disaster Operations and Logistics for the Red Cross. Specialized Red Cross disaster teams are helping now and will be helping for weeks to come as people in Oklahoma recover from these storms. The Red Cross deployed almost 30 emergency response vehicles to distribute food and relief supplies and more are on alert. Two Southern Baptist Convention kitchens and kitchen support trailers will join the relief effort with the ability to serve tens of thousands of meals a day. Emergency aid stations will open where people can get food and snacks, mental health and health services and information about what help is available. The Red Cross is supporting first responders and working with local and state officials to make sure people get the help they need. Meanwhile, the Red Cross continues to provide shelter in Shawnee and other parts of the Oklahoma City area following storms over the weekend. DOLLAR STRETCHER TIPS SOCK SORTING Everyone in my family wears white socks. What a pain to sort! I bought white mesh bags (the kind that normally holds delicates) and gave everyone a bag with instructions to put their dirty socks in their own bag. I wrote their names on the bags with a laundry marker. When I wash whites, I just throw the whole bag in the washer and then the dryer. When I am folding clothes, the socks are in their own bags and can just be put with each persons laundry. -C. DOLLAR STRETCHER TIPS: LARGE DOG BEDS I needed a dog bed for a large dog but did not want to spend the money. As I was folding the down comforter from my bed at the end of the season, I realized how clumped and worn it was. I had purchased it eight years ago at Goodwill for $5. I thought if I folded it just right, it would be a great bed for Pal. I wanted it to look nice in my living room and remembered an unused red sheet I had on hand. I made a bag from the sheet to fit over the folded comforter like a pillowcase. It is perfect for him and looks nice in its place with no out-of-pocket expense for me. -Liz G.

SPRINGTIME ALERT: DO NOT DISTURB YOUNG WILDLIFE Harrisburg- The leaves are green, the flowers are in bloom and, once again, its that time of year when a new generation of wildlife is making its arrival. And its almost a certainty that Pennsylvanians will encounter young wildlife, whether it be in their backyards or high on a mountain. Being outdoors in the spring is an enjoyable way to spend time and learn more about nature, said Calvin W. DuBrock, who directs the Pennsylvania Game Commissions Bureau of Wildlife Management. Whether enjoying your backyard or hiking in the woods, it is time for our annual message for Pennsylvanians to leave wildlife alone and in the wild, especially young of the year. DuBrock said that in the coming days and weeks, Pennsylvanians could find young deer, rabbits, birds, raccoons or other wildlife, some of which might appear to be abandoned. Rest assured that in most cases, the young animal is not an orphan or abandoned and the best thing you can do is to leave it alone, DuBrock advised. DuBrock noted adult animals often leave their young while the adults forage for food. Also, wildlife often relies on a natural defensive tactic called the hider strategy, where young animals will remain motionless and hide in surrounding cover while adults draw the attention of potential predators or other intruders away from their young.
While it may appear as if the adults are abandoning their young, in reality, this is just the animal using its natural instincts to protect its young, DuBrock said. Also, young animals often have camouflaging color patterns to avoid being detected by predators. Wild animals are not meant to be pets, and we must all resist our well-meaning and well-intentioned urge to want to care for wildlife. Taking wildlife from its natural settings and into your home may expose or transmit wildlife diseases to people or domestic animals. Wildlife also may carry parasites such as fleas, ticks or lice - that you wouldnt want infesting you, your family, your home or your pets. DuBrock noted that, each year, people ignore this advice by taking wildlife into their homes and then are urged to undergo treatment for possible exposure to various wildlife-borne diseases, such as rabies. In addition to protecting public health, Game Commission Bureau of Wildlife Protection Director Rich Palmer said that the agency also is concerned with wildlife implications from humans handling wildlife. Habituating wildlife to humans is a serious concern, because if wildlife loses its natural fear of humans it can pose a public safety risk, Palmer said. For example, a few years ago, a yearling, six-point buck attacked and severely injured two people. Our investigation revealed that a neighboring family had illegally taken the deer into their home and fed it as a fawn. This family continued to feed the deer right up until the time of the attack. This particular incident was the subject of numerous news stories around the state, and serves as a fitting example of the possible consequences that can stem from feeding or simply getting too close to wildlife. In addition, Palmer noted that it is illegal to take or possess wildlife from the wild. Under state law, the penalty for such a violation is a fine of up to $1,500 per animal. Under no circumstances will anyone who illegally takes wildlife into captivity be allowed to keep that animal, Palmer said. While residents love to view wildlife and are very compassionate, they must enjoy wildlife from a distance and allow nature to run its course. Palmer also pointed out that, under a working agreement with state health officials, any high risk rabies vector species confiscated after human contact must be euthanized and tested; it cannot be returned to the wild. Though any mammal may carry rabies, species identified in the agreement are: skunks, raccoons, foxes, bats, coyotes and groundhogs. Except for some species of bats, populations of all other rabies vector species are thriving, Palmer said. Therefore, to protect public health and safety, it only makes sense to put down an animal for testing, rather than risk relocating a potentially rabid animal, and to answer the question of whether any people were exposed to the rabies virus. DuBrock said it is always wise to avoid wild animals and even unfamiliar domestic pets because of the potential rabies risk. Animals infected with rabies may not show obvious symptoms, but still may be able to transmit the disease, DuBrock said. People can get rabies from the saliva of a rabid animal if they are bitten or scratched, or if the saliva gets into the persons eyes, mouth or a fresh wound. The last human rabies fatality in Pennsylvania was a 12 year old Lycoming County boy who died in 1984. Wildlife rehabilitators, who are licensed by the Game Commission, are the only ones who are permitted to care for injured or orphaned wildlife for the purposes of eventual release back into the wild. For those who find wildlife that truly is in need of assistance, a listing of licensed wildlife rehabilitators can be found on the Pennsylvania Association of Wildlife Rehabilitators website (http://www.pawr.com). If you are unable to identify a wildlife rehabilitator in your area, contact the Game Commission region office that serves the county in which the animal is found so that you can be referred to the appropriate licensed wildlife rehabilitator. Region office contact information can be found on the agencys website (http://www.pgc.state.pa.us) by putting your cursor over ABOUT US in the menu bar in the banner at the top of the homepage, and then clicking on Region Information in the drop-down menu listing. f EVANGELICAL COVENANT CHURCH 67 Church Street, Port Allegany, PA Pastor: J.T. ELK BIOLOGIST BEGINS WORK WITH GAME COMMISSION Jeremy Banfield previously worked for Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. Harrisburg- The PA Game Commission has hired a new wildlife biologist to serve as its elk project leader. Jeremy Banfield began his work for the commission this week. A native of the Rochester, N.Y. area, Banfield comes to the Game Commission after working most recently as a wildlife biologist with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. Banfield received his bachelors degree in fisheries and wildlife management from Michigan State University and received his masters of science in ecology from the University of Alberta. While working toward his masters degree, Banfields studies focused on mountain lion foraging and prey selection, with an emphasis on impacts to elk populations. Banfield has experience capturing and radio-tracking elk and other wildlife, investigating and resolving crop-damage issues, conducting wildlife surveys and research studies, running check stations and providing public presentations on his work. Banfield also is a four-year veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, where he worked as a machinery technician with and supervised a boat engineering and maintenance group. Banfield, his wife and his 2-year-old son have taken up residence in DuBois. In his new role, Banfield said he wants to continue Pennsylvanias legacy of effective elk management in the states northcentral region. I look forward to meeting and talking with the residents of and visitors to the area comprising Pennsylvanias elk range, and working to ensure the continued success of the states elk, Banfield said. f

BAKE LIKE A PRO WITH 10 EASY TIPS For cupcakes that look as good as they taste, use an aluminum foillined baking cup that's designed to keep its pattern after baking. (NAPSA)-Whether it's a school party, personal accomplishment or just because, every day, there are occasions that call for special treats or desserts. Even with a full schedule, busy moms can bake and decorate beautiful cupcakes that would be perfect for any gathering. The key is to use quality ingredients and products designed for the job. To help, best-selling authors and cupcake gurus Karen Tack and Alan Richardson share their best tips for baking cupcakes like a pro every day. Start with a good cupcake pan. It should be silver colored and a little on the heavy side. For cupcakes that look as good as they taste, use an aluminum foil-lined baking cup that's designed to keep its pattern after baking. Baking cups that are not foil lined can lose their color while baking. Before mixing your cupcake batter, make sure to bring all ingredients to room temperature. This way, the ingredients are more likely to blend together easily. Remember, if you mix cold items into your batter, you run the risk of having a lumpy consistency. This might lead you to overmix the batter and overmixing can cause cupcakes to be chewy instead of moist. Pinch the ends of your baking cup with paper clips to make your cupcakes into different shapes, like a star or a football. Only fill your baking cup 23 to the top. They will rise to the top of the liner while baking. Simply use a serrated knife to trim the top of your cupcakes so they are flat, rather than rounded like a mushroom cap you may find in a bakery. This makes it easier to decorate the top of the cupcake. Chill your cupcakes before you frost them so they won't crumble while you're handling them. Wipe the excess frosting off the spatula on the edge of the can before going back for another swipe. If you have extra frosting on your spatula, you will never get a clean peak on your cupcake top. Keep frosting at room temperature before spreading it on your cupcakes. If frosting is too cold, it will be difficult to spread and can tear the cake. If frosting is too warm, it becomes runny and messy.
