Hello and welcome from the Digital Film, Games and Animation.

Mike Smith Programme Leader mike.smith@leeds-art.ac.uk John Smith Course tutor john.smith@leeds-art.ac.uk Joan Smith Course tutor joan.smith@leeds-art.ac.uk This year we are presenting the final year of BA(hons) Digital Film, Games and Animation Top-Up programme. We are very proud of all the hard work and progress the students have made over the last academic year and indeed through their previous Foundation Degree. Digital Film, Games and Animation is a specialist programme of study that has allowed students to develop an in-depth understanding of the interrelationships between film, games and animation. As the students have progressed through their studies they have developed a professional and critical understanding of the disciplines to ensure that they understand the contextual, ethical and commercial concerns surrounding them. The course has equipped them with strong academic, critical, practical and technical skills that has enabled them to make an informed decision about the career paths that they may want to take. One of the strengths of the cohort this year has been their ability to collaborate with their peers not only Digital Film, Games and Animation but also across the other programmes at Leeds College of Art. This is an essential skill that will help them to progress and achieve their career goals and the creative industries become increasingly interdisciplinary. There is a breadth of work presented this year that included Concept Art, Storyboarding, Film Making, Visual Effects, Animation and Game Levels, Character Design and Game/Virtual Environments. The year has presented many challenges to the students both academic and personal and everyone has come out of the other side richer, both academically and as individuals. All of the students on the programme should have a real sense of personal achievement, they have worked exceptionally hard this year and we wish them every success for the future. The Programme Team

I am an aspiring concept artist and illustrator seeking to establish myself in the world of entertainment design. Ive always been fascinated by fictional worlds; to design and create them has been both my goal and my passion ever since I learned such a career existed. In addition to the core drawing and painting skills that are my bread and butter, I have also developed, through collaboration, an understanding of development pipelines and practices that help contextualise my role.

I have a great interest in computer generated imagery as a way to channel my art. The main influences which have driven me towards visual effects have come from my passion for special effects in film and my love for music video. Over the past 3 years I have developed a general skill set which includes Concept design, 3D modelling and animation. My current study has given me the opportunity to broaden my understanding of editing, compositing and motion tracking to allow me to combine 3D and film together. I am particularly interested in the integration between computer graphics and live action footage. In the future I see my self as a 3D generalist as I feel my skills and interests fit under a wide umbrella of concept art, 3D development to realisation. I enjoy bringing elements of fantasy and science fiction into the real world to inspire emotion through a visual moving image. I hope to one day contribute towards VFX in either film, television, games or advertising.

I am an animator and illustrator based in Leeds. Specialising in character animation within traditional hand drawn, computer based 2D, 3D or stop motion animation; I aim to bring characters to life through animated movement. Within my Foundation Degree and final year of my top year Degree in Digital Film, Games & Animation, I have mainly focused on traditional hand drawn animation. By developing my understanding of hand drawn animation, I have been able to experiment and grow to expand my understanding of traditional methods, approaches and emotions through each piece of paper. By having this grounding of traditional animation, I have been able to apply the ability to break down, organise and create animations through exaggerated observation into various projects and mediums. As well as being a lover of animation, I do a lot of gaming, graffiti illustration, rock climbing and a few other outdoor activities. My main passion and past time however revolves around my desire to work within animation. I spend a lot of time watching various pieces of animation, from student work to feature films, to try and understand their methods and break down their animations in order to improve my own work and have fun! Within my future, I hope to one-day work in an animation company although I am still not certain whether or not to approach animation within games, having looked into the practice and tried it at a basic level. At this current moment in time, I mainly aim towards developing my animation language further through improving my observation and drawing skills and meeting more creatives.
