MODULE SUBMISSION FORM

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: WEDNESDAY 29th May 2013 11.00 1.00pm STUDIO 4

RATIONALE My design practice is ultimately underpinned by a methodical and logical approach to identity design through the exploration of type, layout and iconography. The briefs I have selected are those that I believe define my practice and best reflect me and my approach as a designer. Upon graduation, Luke OBrien and I intend to start a collaborative practice specialising in brand design for small or start-up businesses. Collaboration, both with clients and others on the course, has formed a vital aspect of the FMP as it has allowed an opportunity to develop time management skills, organisational skills and ultimately, communication skills areas I need and, intend to, continually develop.

(An investigation into branding)

Title and Brief Summary include a short rationale for each brief identifying why you chose it, what was the focus of the brief and how long you spent on it.

Design Context

An investigation into branding and identity through 14 designers, studios and agencies. Branding has become a primary interest of mine and is an area of design I have always hoped to explore in more depth. Through an online mini-site, I asked a few questions to those who most inspire my practice and was fortunate to gather a bunch of responses that informed the content of the publication. The project was spread over the initial few weeks.

BRIEF 1

Branding and identity for 3rd year photography student, Nicole Holcroft-Emmess. Nicole

required a contemporary and refined identity that would best define her practice. Accompanying the print collateral, I also designed a responsive web portfolio built by a friend of mine www.nhephoto.com.

BRIEF 2

I devised an identity and print collateral for Rebekah Hill, a 3rd year fashion design student currently in the transition between education and industry. The identity needed to effectively compliment her garments and best define Rebekahs practice. Alongside the brand collateral, I created a lookbook publication to showcase her current collection. Prior to beginning the FMP, I intended to work on a few live projects to offer more insight into working within client restrictions but also t create work that could ultimately be seen in the real world.

BRIEF 3

Form and writing is a continuation of a brief initiated in OUGD301 in collaboration with Max Gregory and Yafet Bisrat. We proposed to devise a number of typefaces individually, housed under the Form~writing name. Accompanying these, we each created a range of type specimen print collateral including a publication, posters and notebooks.

BRIEF 4

In the OUGD301 module, I devised a fictional film magazine entitled Reel. Due to my interest in film and cinema, I decided to expand upon the project, but instead, create the identity for a proposed film festival under the same name. The logo mark was revised to portray a more contemporary aesthetic and I produced a range of print and interactive collateral under the Reel brand. Although a relatively late start, it became the most substantial brief of what I chose to pursue.

BRIEF 5

In collaboration with Luke OBrien, we pitched our designs for the LCA prospectus. The concept of our pitch was then combined with the resolution devised by Max and Niall. Although currently in development, we have begun to devise initial layout spreads and are nearing to source all relevant photography with the help of 2nd year photography student, Ben Harris. This is an on-going project and will run post-FMP.

BRIEF 6

After pitching for the BAGD yearbook, me, Luke OBrien, Max Gregory and Charlotte Bourke were asked to produce an interactive yearbook publication for the Digital Film, Games and Animation course. Our concept was centered on process trying to emulate or translate elements of digital world to the real world through paper craft. This brief has inevitably run in the background of others due to the more flexible submission dates (pdf delivery).

BRIEF 8

Again, Luke and I decided to also pitch for the end of year show. Although a fairly late decision, we generated the concept fairly quickly and were extremely pleased with our submitted resolution. Fortunately, we won the pitch and the design aesthetic was further expanded to a range of print and web collateral. This project will also continue post-fmp but as it is our end of year show towards the middle of June, there must be a fairly quick turnaround.

Additional Comments Brief 1,2,3,4 and 8 are substantial briefs Brief 5 and 6 are less substantial briefs Brief 7 was later removed due to more time spent on other briefs. Please note, the DFGA yearbook, end of year show and prospectus briefs will continue post-FMP and are currently in development.
