What is Anthroposophy?
Developed by Rudolf Steiner in the early years of the 20th century, anthroposophy is a spiritual scientific path of knowledge and self-transformation. It not only serves the individual, but offers direction for the renewal of medicine, education (Waldorf education), agriculture (Bio-dynamic farming), the arts, and social forms. Remedial Education In Educational Support or

Remedial Education, we work out of the pedagogical principle of Waldorf Education. The processes of observation, imagination and action are brought into service for the children. Remedial Teachers address challenges primarily in children and also adults. Common challenges are ADD, ADHA, mild forms of autism, constitutions that affect learning styles such as large-small headed, learning disabilities, and dyslexia. The modalities we incorporate can be based on both Waldorf pedagogy and mainstream, such as Sensory Integration or OrtonGillingham tutoring. Remedial teachers utilize developmental movement, rhythms for temperaments, Extra Lesson, visual and auditory perception and memory techniques, and other activities that re-ensoul the senses and connect children to the spiritual imaginations. What is Artemisia?
Artemisia was developed through the collaborative efforts of healthcare professionals working toward the anthroposophical renewal of the medical arts as described by Dr. Rudolf Steiner and Dr. Ita Wegman. Through a shared understanding of the true nature of the human being and through an interdisciplinary exploration of various therapeutic approaches, members can learn from one another and become more effective in helping their patients achieve health. The annual conferences and quarterly newsletters offer a variety of topics to foster professional development and help build a community of support among the practitioners. We also publish a professionals directory and offer a speakers bureau for presentations and workshops on anthroposophical therapeutics. Artemisia works in cooperation with the Medical Section of the School of Spiritual Science at the Goetheanum in Switzerland. Membership in Artemisia is open to allied health professionals including art therapists, chiropractors, counselors, curative educators, therapeutic eurythmists, dentists, massage therapists, medical students, nurses, nutritionists, naturopaths, occupational and physical therapists, physicians, psychologists, speech therapists and anyone connected with other therapeutic disciplines or areas of interest who is dedicated to the principles of anthroposophically-extended therapeutics. Affiliated professional organizations that serve individual professions include the Anthroposophical Nurses Association of America (ANAA), Physicians Association for Anthroposophical Medicine (PAAM), Rhythmical Massage Therapy Association (RMTA), Association for Anthroposophical Art Therapy in North America (AAATNA) and Association for Therapeutic Eurythmy in North America (ATHENA). Examples follow.

Anthroposophical Medicine is a holistic and human-centered approach that begins by recognizing the vast information acquired by modern medical science. It then goes further and adds to this knowledge the understanding of the physical body, psyche and spirit derived from spiritual scientific methodology. The anthroposophical physician is trained in modern as well as natural and anthroposophical therapeutics founded upon an in-depth spiritual knowledge of the human being. To contact the Physicians' Association for Anthroposophical Medicine (PAAM), Phone: 734 930-9462.

Rhythmical Massage Therapy furthers the art of massage

through work with processes, such as warmth and rhythm, which are found in all living beings. The Rhythmic Massage therapist is trained to work in either an independent private practice setting or, in the case of more serious illness, in cooperation with a physician. To contact the Rhymical Massage Therapy Association of North America (RMTA), Phone: 603 525-4763.

Art Therapy An anthroposophical

extension of medical practice, artistic therapy may be prescribed for adults or children with a variety of diagnoses either physiological or psychological. The range of media used may include watercolor painting, clay modeling, form drawing or work with charcoalwith the inherient goal of strengthening and harmonizing the rhythmic system of the human being. The polarities of light and dark, gaviety and levity or the metamorphic quality of loosening and forming may become the focus in treatment---to help awaken new capacities and/or insights for this soul work towards healing. To this end, hygienic exercises also may be taken up by individuals who wish to work toward health maintenance. To contact Association for Anthroposophical Art in North America (AAATNA), Phone: 212 744-0257.

Anthroposophical Nursing also goes beyond conventional

practice. Studying life forces and spiritual processes in nature and in the human being gives a depth of understanding regarding diet, lifestyle, and the meaning of illness. Specific techniques for compresses, baths, and embrocations enlarge the nurses capacity to heal. To contact the Anthroposophical Nurses Association of America (ANAA), Phone: 503-235-9067.

Therapeutic Eurythmy In eurythmy,

the silent gestures underlying the sounds of speech and music are brought into an inner soul movement and an outer physical movement at the same time. This artistic process draws the intricacies of human anatomy and spirit into harmony. The gestures therefore have the power of healing and can effect profound change when the human organism tends toward imbalance and illness. Having first mastered eurythmy as a performing art, the eurythmist then completes a rigorous training in specialized movements and medical theory. Conscious participation in the healing process in eurythmy can be a rewarding and effective part of the patient's treatment. To contact the Association for Therapeutic Eurythmy in North America (ATHENA), Phone: 707 568-4288.

Therapeutic Speech is an artistic therapy in which the spoken

word is cultivated, explored and practiced. The clients own activity is stimulated, awakening motivation and augmenting the potential for healing. In working with the qualities of vowels and consonants, rhythms, voice placement, imagination, different styles of poetry, as well as stories and other prose texts, healing forces become available. These renewing forces, which carry light and warmth, allow us to come more fully to ourselves and to take hold of our lives in new ways. Therapeutic speech work can be of value in the treatment of developmental disorders, constitutional challenges, attention problems, exhaustion, depression, migraines, recovery from emotional trauma, psychosomatic disorders, anemia, respiratory disorders,
