Sluice gate Meppen

Weir at Lengfurth

The drives of the upper and lower gates of the large sluice gate in Meppen were restored. The lower gate is driven by a jointed rack with counterweights that are attached to the gate by means of ropes. The jointed rack is made completely from stainless steel with self-lubricating bronze bearings. The upper gate is raised and lowered by a chain drive mechanism. These chains are also made from stainless steel with self-lubricating bearings. Because of the space constraints, two hoisting chains with triple chainwheel engagement were employed in a side-by-side arrangement.

The chains for the weir of the Lengfurth openings M and R were only partially refurbished, as this equipment is only intended to be used for a maximum of 20 years. The solution consists of a standard steel chain with shrunk-fit collar rings. The link plates are provided with corrosion protection. Joints are lubricated at regular intervals depending on the number of flexures.

Weir at Weiblingen

In Wieblingen a stainless steel lifting/folding chain with self-lubricating bushings was employed. The lifting chain is attached to the roller. The other end is attached to the gate as a simplex chain. Therefore, fine adjustment of both the overpour gate and the roller movements for large flow rates, may be controlled with a drive pinion.

On this page we present some applications. Because of large variety stresses, we adapt the different materials, the surface treatment and initial lubrication to suit the respective operating conditions. In particular, the chains for round log grading and point drawing are subjected to extreme loads due to the relatively high speed and external environmental influences, such as low temperatures and heavy soiling. We optimize materials and heat treatment processes for you. At the customers request, we will undertake a close examination of the plant and the installation situation, and then we will optimize the dimensions of the chain to extend the service life and to reduce the maintenance intervals.

CONSTRUCTION OF A STEEL LINK CHAIN

Chain
Every steel link chain consists of inner and outer links. The figure below shows both links with their respective components. The shape and mechanical design of the individual components of the chain differ for every type of chain. All the parts of a chain are made from a variety of materials, mainly however, from high-quality steel of a variety of qualities and heat treatment processes.

Outer link plate

2 pieces ea. = 1 outer lin

pin

bushing 2 pieces ea. = 1 inner link

inner link plate roller

Pins
Pins are subjected to high bending and shearing forces and therefore are generally made of high quality hardened steel. With the appropriate heat treatment, these are provided with a high tensile strength core and a wear-resistant and extremely hard surface. Provision of the correct surface treatment, combined with close manufacturing tolerances guarantees the best joint and press-fit conditions.

Bushings
Pins are subjected to high bending and shearing forces and therefore are generally made of hardened steel alloy. The appropriate heat treatment provids these with the correct wear resistance and surface quality.

Rollers
Rollers are mainly subjected to impact shock and are therefore made entirely of heat-treated steel or hardened steel (as well as other materials for thick-walled rollers). Correct tolerances guarantee proper running fit on the bushing.

Links:
Links are mainly subjected to tensile stresses and are manufactured of tempered steel. Depending on the type of chain, they are heat treated to achieve high fatigue strength and resistance to breakage, whilst retaining the required levels of elasticity. The superior hole quality and pitch accuracy is achieved in part by precision punching. This process ensures precise seating conditions for the pins and bushings, as well as close length tolerances for the entire chain. Shot peening of the links ,cold hardens, these surfaces, thereby increasing the fatigue strength. 9

30

SLECTION OF BUSHED ROLLER CHAINS

Calculation: Bushed roller chains are drive chains that cater for a limited range of speeds (v ~ 4 m/s). They are similar to the roller chains, but all round parts are secured against rotation and no roller exists. The design of bushed roller chains is similar to roller chains. The actual performance is multiplied by the correction factor on page 62 and the appropriate chain is selected from the diagram. Again, it is recommended that you examine the joint surface pressure of the selected chain.

32

SELECTION OF CONVEYOR CHAINS

Calculation: The design of a conveyor chain depends largely on the loads, the speeds, the operating conditions and the chain length. The real tensile force F is calculated by means of the formulas below. The calculated value is then multiplied by the correct safety factor r. This generally is in the range between 6 and 7. In borderline cases, a lower factor can be used if you accept minor reductions in the working life. It is always advisable, however, to recalculate the joint surface pressure for the selected chain. The chart on p. 95.shows permitted values for the joint surface pressure. All conveyor chains are produced on so-called base chains consisting of pins, bushings and joints and can be adapted for different purposes by means of hollow bearings, rollers, angles, carriers and other components. The tensile strength of the chain is not affected except where hollow pins are used.

CONVEYOR CHAINS
In accordance with DIN 8165 and manufacturers standard specifications Note: Certain components of the bushed conveyor chains listed below are available ex-stock. This means that different combinations of the standard components may be assembled into custom chain types at the customers request. In other words, conveyor chains of the solid or hollow bearing pin type, without rollers as illustrated, or with either type A, B or D rollers and equipped with chain links can be assembled to meet our customers specific requirements. It is also possible to equip the base chain with a special chain links and carriers. However, chains to DIN 8165 should not be used for new installations since this standard is out of date. For these systems, we recommend internationally standardised (ISO) chains to DIN 8167, 8168 and 8169 as shown on p. 44/45 and 55.

SELECTION OF ROLLER CHAINS

Calculation
Properly constructed chain drives rely on a number of factors. The most important ones are: Performance, pinion speed, impact load, lubrication, maintenance, joint surface pressure, chain pitch, durability and safety. These factors are interdependent and most of them are contained in the Selection Chart and the Factor-k1-table. For a selection, it is essential that the performance, speed and application area are known. Rated power P is multiplied by correction factor k1 from the table and the resulting performance Pk is inserted into the performance chart on page 63. Combine these values with the rpm speed n of the small pinion to select the respective chain. The chart shows the performance curves of the chains, based on: 19 teeth; transmission ratio 3: 1; impact-free and uniform loading, chain length of at least 100 x pitch, service life of 15000 hrs and proper lubrication (p. 92). Under borderline conditions, the next smaller size of chain may be used if a slight reduction in the service life of the chain is acceptable. It is always advisable, however, to recalculate the joint surface pressure of the chain. The chart on p. 95. shows permissible values for the joint surface pressure. Under special conditions it is advisable that you to use our engineering services. When you have supplied all the necessary information, our engineering services will work out an optimised chain drive for you.

HIGH PERFORMANCE CHAIN COUPLINGS

Chain couplings:
To determine the power transmission capacity of chain couplings, select the appropriate factor k2 from the chart on this page. The major advantage offered by chain couplings is flexible power transmission in combination with quick release properties and the general availability of spare parts. Chain couplings without casing are intended for secondary and light duty transmission purposes. Chain couplings that are provided with a casing, cater for higher speeds and loads. The casing protects the coupling and retains the lubricant. The chain coupling consists of two one-sided chain wheels, that are coupled to each other by a duplex roller chain to DIN 8187. The chain wheels are made from steel and have 20 induction-hardened teeth. Even though the chain couplings will tolerate slight misalignment, the shafts should be aligned as accurately as possible to optimise service life.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT STEEL LINK CHAINS

1. The roller chain drive
Roller chain drives are installed in many locations, specifically where belt drives and gear drives cannot be used. The roller chain drive combines the advantages of the belt and the gear drive but without the particular disadvantages. Roller chain drives are rugged, high precision units that run without slip and with an efficiency of 98% to link single or multiple shafts at greater distances. The advantages over gear drives include the high elasticity and wide performance range and the fact that the centre distance is independent of the transmission ratio.

2. Service life of steel link chains

Steel link chains are generally selected on the basis of joint surface pressure and breaking load. However, because of the large number of applications the respective safety factors are also considered. This means that service life does not solely depend on the breaking load, but even more on the wear resistance of the joint components. The basic dimensions of every chain should be rated such that none of the components of the chain break down but that service life is limited by the wear and tear on the components of the joints. Any wear on the joints results in an extension of the chain pitch, consequently the chainwheel will no longer mesh properly. Chain wear elongation should not exceed 3 %. The important factors that affect the service life of the chain are the correct design and calculation of the chain in relation to the operating conditions, accurate installation and proper care and maintenance.

3. Lubrication of steel link chains

After assembly and quality control, chains are generally protected against rust by a preservative. Before commissioning, all joints must be lubricated with a suitable lubricant. Lubrication is determined by the application and depends on chain speed as well as environmental conditions. For steel link chains, we recommend SAE-30-50 lubricants along with the lubrication method listed below: v [m/s] Lubrication method
2 Manual lubrication occasionally using a brush or a can Drop-feed lubrication continuously using drip lubricator

no. X

[m/s]
14

Lubrication method
Bath or mist lubrication using grease shields Forced-feed circulating lubrication possibly with re-cooling

no. Z

14

The lubricants such as oil or grease should always be applied between the inner and outer plates on the side facing the chainwheel. Periodic cleaning of the chain and removing any abrasive matter, other contaminants, and gumming increase the service life. In addition to the lubricants mentioned above, dry lubricants are also used for special applications. These are usually reeled, sprayed or painted on before assembly.

4. Chain wheels
Correct chainwheel design and toothing are critical factors for the service life of a chain. Generally, chain wheels having 19 teeth or more are employed. Tension sprockets and chain wheels with secondary functions may have 13 or more teeth. Where impact shocks are possible at high speeds, it is advisable to heat treat the teeth to prevent increased wear and tear. The contact angle on chain wheels should not be less than 120o and the gear ratio should not exceed 1:8. The number of teeth of the chain wheels should be matched with the number of links of the chain so that the same roll does not contact the same gullet after several revolutions. Wheels with 6 teeth may be used in extreme cases on chains used at relatively low velocities and having a large chain pitch.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT STEEL LINK CHAINS

continued from p. 92

5. The assembly of steel link chains

Steel link chains are generally connected with links. Wherever possible, we use chains with an even number of links to obtain a chain where the beginning and the end have internal links that are connected with a straight link. Fit the spring clip in the running direction! Chains with an odd number of links require installation of a cranked link, which reduces the breaking load of this type of chain by approx. 20%. If the sections of the chain are produced by cutting pieces from a length of chain, the outer link that is removed must not be reused. It is essential that the chain wheels are aligned properly and that they are located as close as possible to the bearing. In addition, make sure that the shafts are parallel to each other. The recommended position of the shafts is at an angle of 60 with respect to the horizontal plane. Shafts that are arranged above each other must be kept under constant tension; otherwise, the chain would skip the teeth of the lower wheel. The chain slack should be no more than 2% of shaft spacing, but it should be as low as possible under intermittent loads. This is adjusted by the adjustment of one bearing, by retensioning the tension station, or by moving the tensioning sprocket or the tensioning rail. Avoid stretching a chain too tightly, since this would increase wear and result in noisy operation. The tension station should have a draw length of at least 1.5 times the chain pitch to be able to replace a two-piece link. Chain drives require no preload tensioning.

6. The control and measurements of steel link chains

The raw materials for chains and wheels are subjected to a number of precise checks. During production, individual parts are constantly checked for accuracy of dimensions, adherence to tolerances, degree of hardness, hardening depth and surface texture. After riveting, the length of the dry, unlubricated chain is measured under a pre-determined load. For roller chains in accordance with DIN 8187, the maximum permissible tolerance in length must not exceed + 0.15% of 49 times chain pitch. Finally, the chains are tested statically and dynamically employing the latest test methods.

7. Standardisation of steel link chains

Most of the common steel link chains are standardized and are listed below with their respective DIN specification number. In addition to these standards, there is a range of manufacturers standards for special purpose chains for a large variety of applications:
Pintle chains Articulated chains, malleable steel, can be taken apart Galle chains Leaf chains Slat band chains Bush chains, short pitch Draw bench chains without bushes Draw bench chains with bushes Bush chains Conveyor chains Rollers for conveyor chains ISO solid bearing pin conveyor chains ISO hollow bearing type conveyor chains Rollers for ISO conveyor chains Conveyor chains for belt conveyors Plate-link chains for chain conveyors Roller chains (extended pitch) Cranked link chains Paternoster roller chains Roller chains for sustained chain elevators Roller chains - European series Roller chains - American series Roller chains for agricultural machinery Steel link chains, chains, chain parts Chain drive selection DIN 654 DIN 686 DIN 8150 DIN 8152 DIN 8153 DIN 8154 DIN 8156 DIN 8157 DIN 8164 DIN 8156 DIN 8166 DIN 8167 DIN 8168 DIN 8169 DIN 8175 DIN 8176 DIN 8181 DIN 8182 DIN 8184 DIN 8185 DIN 8187 DIN 8188 DIN 8189 DIN 8194 DIN 8195

JOINT SURFACE PRESSURE CHART

for steel link chains A chain selected in accordance with the true tensile force F should always be checked for permissible bearing pressure. You can use the following formula to calculate the joint surface pressure.

The Values of permissible joint surface pressure Pperm. shown in the chart apply to normal operating conditions only: free from dirt, well-lubricated, impact-free, minimum safety factor of 6. Then the expected working life is: for conveyor chains with 6 to 16 teeth and about 10000 operating hrs; for roller chains on sprockets with 19 teeth or more approx. 15000 operating hrs.
