What is the Golgi Apparatus?

The Golgi Apparatus is also known as the Golgi Complex and it is a very similar packing organelle to the Endoplasmic Reticulum. The organelle was named after an Italian scientist called Camillo Golgi. Typically, the organelle is a membrane-bound structure with only a single membrane. The Golgi Apparatus has many functions and jobs in the cell it inhabits.

Major Functions

carries out the processing of proteins generated in endoplasmic reticulum. attached with proteins in order to form carbohydrates carrying out the breakdown of proteins and formation of small, active fragments. Synthesis of proteoglycans sulfation

Major Structures:

comprised of a series of five to eight cup shaped membrane- covered sacks called cisternae looks like a stack of deflated balloons As many as 60 cisternae
combined to make up the golgi apparatus.

Location in the Cell:

It is close to the endoplasmic reticulum and the nucleus.

Facts about the Golgi Apparatus:

- Receives substances from Endoplasmic Reticulum - Made up of membrane-bound sacs - Produces vesicles that carry secretions to the surface of the cell - Epithelial cells that secrete mucus have many Golgi bodies
