CUENCAS SEDIMENTARIAS
NOMBRE: Ximena Geovanna Chanchay Cadena TEMA: SUMARY OF PLATE TECTONICS AND BASIN SUBSIDENCE HISTORY
Summary
The setting of tectonics is the principal control on the history of sedimentary basin subsidence. It is proposed by the text that there may a limited range of driving mechanisms. This conclusion is proposed based on observations that several basin settings demonstrate discrete subsidence patterns. It is therefore theorized that calculated subsidence history may be a tool in identifying the tectonic settings of ancient basins of unidentified origin. Rapid initial synrift subsidence and prolonged thermal subsidence have been observed at passive margin locations.
Basins at strike-slip tectonic locations have all been observed to display short and fast subsidence.
Intracontinental basins are characterized by drawn out gradual subsidence. The subsistence patterns of intracontinental basins typically conform to thermal subsidence with thick lithosphere. However, it was noted that most intracontinental basins differ from the typical thermal curves of tectonic reactivation.
It is accepted that, despite the advantages of subsidence analysis as a tool for identifying tectonic setting in sequences of unknown or ancient origin, second order variations in the subsidence rate reveals additional information on the tectonic timing and driving forces during formation.
It is recommended that the approach outlined in the text be used together with other basin analysis techniques due the limited amount of data sets available for compilation and because basins often span multiple tectonic settings over time.
