RPL Welcomes Journalist Peter Carlson


RPL is pleased to welcome author Peter Carlson on Thursday, June 6th at 6:30 pm at RPL Headquarters. The program is free and all are welcome. Expert journalist Carlson will discuss his recently published book, Junius and Alberts Adventures in the Confederacy: A Civil War Odyssey. This is the true story of adventurous reporters Junius Browne and Albert Richardson, who manage a daring escape following their capture in Vicksburg. Their amazing odyssey is packed with drama, courage, horrors, and heroics, plus many moments of antic comedy. We will learn about their connections to Salisbury, where Junius and Albert endured a stay in the Confederacys most notorious prison, Salisbury Confederate Prison. Carlson, a reporter and columnist

Peter Carlson visits RPL June 6th. for the Washington Post for 22 years, is now a columnist at American History magazine. He has also written for Smithsonian, Life, People, Newsweek, The Nation, and The Huffington Post. He lives in Rockville, MD. We hope that you will join us for this special program. Summer Reading for Teens


RPL invites teens to participate in the Beneath the Surface Summer Reading Program. Teens will learn about underground cities and tunnels, explore fossils and gems, and discover other places and things hidden beneath the surface, all through reading and taking part in fun activities. All programs starting June 18th and running through August 1st will be held from 3:30-5:00 pm. Programs will take place on Tuesdays at Headquarters in Salisbury, Wednesdays at the East Branch in Rockwell, and Thursdays at the South Rowan Regional Library in China Grove. Upcoming programs include: Fossils and Gems: June 18-20 Gem Panning and Creating Fossils Inside Out: June 25-27 Crafts from the inside out Game Show Challenge: July 2-3, 5 How much do you know about bugs, mummies and all things housed Beneath the Surface Skill Toys Workshop: July 9-11 Learn how to use flower sticks, a Chinese yo-yo and more Scratch the Surface: July 16-18 Scratch Crafts and more Beneath Your Feet: July 24-26 Underground Cities and Tunnels. Masked Ball and Prize Raffle: August 1, 3:30-5:00 pm End of summer celebration at South Rowan Regional, China Grove.

Dig Into Reading This Summer at RPL


RPLs Dig Into Reading weekly programs run from June 17th through August 1st. RPL staff will be entertaining the youngest participants, while professional performers Dig In with the schoolaged children. These guests include Pint Size Polka, Captain Jim, Ro and Mo, Discovery Place, Dapper Dion, Flows Circus, Blue Moon Puppets. RPL staff thanks the Friends of RPL and all of our sponsors for their continued support of our Summer Reading Program! This year there will also be a special Literacy event held by Altrusa at Patterson Farm on Saturday June 8th from 10 am 2 pm. Children are invited to participate in storytelling, games, and other fun literacy-based activities, and all children receive a free book!

Summer Movie Series Begins June 11 at RPL


Rowan Public Library is pleased to offer a movie night every Tuesday at 6:30 pm at RPL Headquarters in Salisbury throughout the summer. Movies are free and all ages are welcome. In keeping with summer reading program themes, childrens movies will Dig Into Reading and teen films will look Beneath the Surface. The line-up also includes Groundbreaking films for adults. Movies begin June 11 and run through August 20. The selected films are: June 11 James & the Giant Peach June 18 June 25 July 2 July 9 July 16 July 23 July 30 Holes The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel All the President's Men How to Eat Fried Worms Journey to the Center of the Earth Calendar Girls The Never Ending Story August 6 August 13 August 20 Aquamarine Argo The Deep End of the Ocean

All movies are rated G, PG, or PG-13 with the exception of Argo. Anyone under 17 will need to be accompanied by a parent to attend this movie. Please mark your calendars for free summer fun Tuesdays at 6:30 pm. Popcorn and lemonade will be served.
