on this evening, which aims to celebrate the summer solstice. Thousands of people go to the beaches to take their first swim of the year, although wetting your feet is considered sufficient. Some people leap over the fire, which can be somewhat dangerous if you are not fit and if the bonfire is very big. On this very special night, all the towns on the Costa del Sol organise special events such as music concerts, games and other activities. Also, some places hold their patron saints celebrations at this time, such as Alhaurn de la Torre, Arroyo de la Miel and Gibralgalia (Crtama), among others. In one way or other, this date marks the start of the peak season on the Costa del Sol.

Mlaga botnica

Botanical Mlaga
A trip through the principal gardens of a Mediterranean city
LAGA can boast a rich and spectacular botanic wealth, which like all others is the result of long and loving dedication. A trip around the citys gardens is like a trip through paradise, a visit to places with a splendid and varied combination of botanical species. El Parque de Mlaga and the adjacent gardens of Pedro Luis Alonso and Puerta Oscura are only part of this extraordinary heritage and after visiting those, visitors should not miss the chance of also seeing the Historic Garden of La Concepcin. Within the area bordered by the Alameda Principal and the Paseo de Espaa, which runs parellel to the Muelle de Guadiaro, the aforementioned Parque de Mlaga extends from the Plaza del General Torrijos to the Plaza de la Marina. It consists of three paths which are 800 metres long and ten metres wide; one is on the north side and two are on the south of the large central area for vehicles which is 25 metres wide and is a continuation of the Alameda. The overall area is more than 30,000 square metres, if we include the part which is surrounded by orange and cypress trees beside the City Hall and the Puerta Oscura Gardens. The Pedro Luis Alonso garden is a pure example of a formal Mediterranean garden It was designed by architect Guerrero Strachan, who created most of the historic gardens in the city. This one, which bears the name of the first mayor of the post-war period, was designed in 1945 along the lines of a Latin garden; it includes characteristics not only of Hispano-Muslim gardens but also of French; low hedges to give colour and symmetry, orange trees to give shade, colour and fragrance; pools to provide a contrast and bring freshness and the sound of running water; the aviary and the large lake which are home to birds which provide colour, song and movement. The design also constitutes an ingenious transition between the Parque and the Puerta Oscura; the garden harmonises as much with the walls of the Alcazaba fortress and Gibralfaro as with the City Hall. Few places in Mlaga can boast such a combination of architecture and botany. The National Arquitecture Magazine (1943) makes the following reference to the Puerta Oscura garden:"At the same time as the reconstruction of the Alcazaba, and as a complement to the same, Guerrero Strachan designed the surrounding area including the present Puerta Oscura gardens and the extension to the Park. Both
of these combine the characteristics of a garden with those of the city. The Puerta Oscura garden is terraced, because of the slope of the Alcazaba hillside. The colours of the different types of vegetation are outstanding and they combine perfectly with the architectural elements paving, terraces, fountains etc all of which are placed geometrically in a traditional decorative composition. These lovely gardens on the south slope of the Gibralfaro hill, upon which the Alcazaba stands, were cleverly designed by Guerrero Strachan, who transformed a steep hillside into a succession of terraces, paths and small fountains which surprise visitors to the city. These gardens also frame the walls of the Alcazaba, so their design had to harmonise with those; the fortress can now be appreciated as forming a part of this exceptional complex of gardens and buildings which includes the Pedro Luis Alonso gardens, the Parque, the gardeners house and the Customs building. The botanical jewel of Mlaga, La Concepcin garden, is the most beautiful and most important tropical and subtropical garden in Spain and is one of the best in Europe. It is a century and a half old, as it was created by Amalia Heredia Livermore and Jorge Loring Oyarzbal, the Marquis and Marchioness of Loring, in 1850. It was declared a Historic and Artistic garden in 1943 and was subsequently acquired by Mlaga council in 1990, restored and then opened to the public in 1994. Situated five kilometres from the city centre, it should not be missed. Tourists of all nationalities are astounded that such a beautiful garden should exist here, in an area surrounded by mountains. A visit here is truly spectacular, because it gives the sensation of having immersed yourself in a tropical forest but a very refined and elegant one in Europe. There is also a small museum with Roman statues and mosaics and an exhibition about archaeology.

A year of welcomes ( a n d m o re st i l l t o c om e )
ELCOME to Mlaga is now one year old and this part of the MARKETINNOVA Group has become a Welcome To Spain, a qualitative and quantitive leap if there was ever one. We play our part in accordance with the coat of arms of our very hospitable city. Month by month, we have brought our kindness and the best of ourselves to our visitors. Through our pages have passed the most important people in the world of tourism, who have brought distinction to our publication; we have also interviewed people from other countries who, for different reasons, have fallen in love with this place. We have shown off our greenest, leafiest and most ecological corners; we have passed through the historic city centre a thousand and one times; on many occasions we have visited lovely places like Marbella, Antequera, Ronda etc. We have talked about food and drink
(Mmm, sometimes you can almost smell these on our pages); we have become emotional about the triumphs of our colours. We have talked so many times about the legendary places of Mlaga, which are even unknown to many local people. We have always been immersed in the world of Culture, we have shown our museums to our visitors, we have boarded the fabulous cruise liners which visit our magnificent port on endless occasions. And yes, there will be more. And best of all, of even better quality. Apart from the content of our newspaper, our visits to the cruise ships are really important. The big liners stop over in our city and we are waiting for them with open arms to give out copies of our newspaper, which is why we come on board. All of Mlaga is contained in just one newspaper, and we were welcomed from the very first edition.
Our representatives were committed to us. Humbly, we place our grain of sand (Mediterranean sand) in the spreading of information about our city and our destination. Throughout this year, we have succeeded in making our newspaper available in places such as Mlaga Airport, thanks toTurismo Andaluz; we have organised day-long conferences on Mlaga-Costa del Sol cruise tourism, with great success. We are now keenly awaiting our sister paper in Catalunya, Welcome to Barcelona, and other conferences, fairs and a few other surprises are in store so that at the end of this year, for the first time, we will be able to present the WELCOME PRIZES for cruise tourism, with the involvement of institutions, shipping companies and local businesses.
We dont stop. Our destination, MlagaCosta del Sol, our form of being and thinking, makes each day a challenge for us and that is how we like it. One year is a long time and we would like to thank so many people but space is limited and it is certain that we would unfairly forget to mention someone who definitely merits our gratitude. However, these people know who they are, and to them we say thank you, thank you so very much. And of course, many thanks to all that you do so that we exist; to all the people from all over the world who choose my land to visit: some come for a few hours, others a few days, but I am sure they will keep coming back. Because here we are again, with our arms open and our biggest smile, so they have a very enjoyable stay.

Histor y of Mlaga
LAGA, under the name of Malaka (referring to the salting of fish), was founded by the Phoenicians around 800 B.C. as a trading place, following the colonisation which commenced in 1100 B.C. with the founding of Gadir (Cdiz). After the Greek domination which lasted for over 70 years, Malaga was ruled by the Carthaginians but after the Punic Wars, which ended in the year 202 B.C. with vic-

tory by the Romans, the city passed into their domain under the name of Flavia Malacita, and became an important point of transit with communications to other Roman enclaves in the Peninsula and other Mediterranean ports. The Roman Theatre dates back to this period and although it is small in size it is one of the oldest in the whole of Hispania. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Mlaga was affected by the great migrations and settlements of the Germanic peoples, specifically the Siling Vandals who imported the Arian beliefs from the Orient. In the early 8th century the collapse of the gothic monarchy began and from the coasts of North Africa the Moors penetrated the Iberian Peninsula. Mlaga fell under their
control in the year 743 and became a flourishing city, surrounded by a wall with five large gateways. The city comprised numerous walled districts and was crossed from East to West by a road which linked the port and the Alcazaba fortress with the interior of the walled precinct. Separate from the rest of the city were the districts of traders from Genoa and the Jewish district. In the 13th century Abderramn III built the Atarazanas Gate (which is now the entrance to the indoor market). Although in the 14th century the first attempts at a reconquest took place, it wasnt until the end of the 15th century that the Catholic Monarchs succeeded in taking the city. Mlaga was conquered on August 19th 1487 (the last city to be conquered was Granada in 1492).With this conquest, religious communities became a fundamental part of urban growth, with the poorer districts on the outskirts. A grand square was created for the first time - the Plaza Mayor, which is today the Plaza de la Constitucin as well as La Victoria and La Trinidad convents. The 16th and 17th centuries were characterised by the crisis which resulted in the expulsion of the Moorish converts on one hand and the bad harvests, the floods caused by the overflowing of the Guadalmedina river and the epidemics on the other. In the 17th century the port was built, and it was enlarged later. Although work began on the Cathedral in 1528, it was not finished until the 18th century: well into the Baroque period. In the same era, the port was enlarged once again, recovering some of its previous activity. In the 19th century Mlaga began important urban development, with a clear separation of the industrial area from that of large mansions and hotels. Calle Marqus de Larios and La Alameda opened. The economic and political crises which were due to the tyranny of King FernandoVII (who allowed the unjust shooting of Torrijos and his men, whose remains lie in the square which is now called Plaza de la Merced and is a venue for different activities and festivals) are the outstanding negative features of the 19th century. The first decades of the 20th century were not very favourable but from the 1960s Mlaga was the scene of the tourism boom in Spain and millions of people chose to spend their holidays in the city, while thousands of foreigners decided it was the ideal place to live. It became the fifth most important city in Spain and a modern European capital, enriched by its international diversity and mixture of cultures. Since 1992 Mlaga has had good road infrastructure with magnificent national connections and it has one of the most important international airports in Europe.

ELCOME to Mlaga is celebrating its first anniversary, something which is not easy in the world of print media. The best way to celebrate this is to start another exciting project, that of W2Barcelona, which will begin this month, in June. So explains Carlos Moral, the director of the Marketinnova group which publishes these newspapers. -What have been the key points when setting up and developing Welcome to Mlaga? -Having a team of professionals at the head of the project and the backing of a consolidated business group like Marketinnova Consultores. The relationship between our group and the media has considerably favoured the structural development of our project. -What are the results of this first year of Welcome to Mlaga?
-The results are clearly positive, in a scenario where the sale of publicity in the print media is increasingly difficult. Maintaining a project like ours and having perspectives of growth in the short term, as we have, is encouraging. -Barcelona and Almera are new projects of Marketinnova with regard to publications aimed at cruise tourism. How are they going? -In the case of Barcelona, we knew that sooner or later we would have to anchor in this port. We cannot forget that it is the top port for cruise tourism in Europe and the fourth in the world. The launch of W2Barcelona will take place this month, to coincide with the anniversary of Welcome to Malaga, which from now on will be called W2Mlaga. -As well as the publications, your company has taken another step forward and is invol-

perfectly: the lightly fried onion, the type of rice used and the quality of the seafood used in its preparation. And of course, the way it is made is important. A good paella should never be pre-cooked. It needs time for the rice to cook and time to rest. Some cooks like to put it in the oven for the final phase of preparation, while others prefer to cover it with a cloth. Either is fine, to ensure that this delicious speciality is cooked to the point of perfection. Another factor to take into account is where to eat the paella. Enjoying it beside the beach, where the sea breeze plays a fundamental role, is highly recommended. Fortunately, the coast of Mlaga boasts numerous restaurants which prepare a very good paella. One of these is the Ayo beach barrestaurant in Nerja. Its owner has been making paella for local residents and tourists for decades. In fact, his expertise in preparing this dish featured in a famous TV series in the 1980s, called Verano Azul and since then many people have visited the restaurant especially to try the genuine paella of Ayo. However, it is not necessary to travel so many kilometres from Mlaga Port to try a delicious paella. Along the seafront promenades of the Costa del Sol there are restaurants and beach bars which are known for their excellent paellas. One of these is Vicen Playa, in the most westerly part of the coast of Mlaga city. The paellas of this charming restaurant are absolutely perfect. In fact, together with the arroz caldoso, paella is one of its star dishes. The secret? Top quality ingredients. And not only the fish and shellfish (the owner used to be a fisherman) but also the vegetables, which come from his own land, and the rice, which is one of the most expensive on the market. From 12 euros per person, you can enjoy a seafood paella at this restaurant, although you can also opt for a paella made with large red prawns called carabineros for 24 euros per person. These delicious shellfish ar also known locally as chorizos. There are also arroces caldosos (these are rice dishes similar to paella but with more liquid) made with shellfish, carabineros and lobster. Other recommended places to eat paella in Mlaga are on the seafront promenades at Pedregalejo and El Palo. Unique establishments such as 'Miguelito El Carioso' also serve paellas at an excellent price-quality ratio. But there is one thing to remember: if you decide to try a paella in one of these restaurants, you must book your paella at least a day in advance so it can be prepared properly.
LTHOUGH paella is a dish which originated in Valencia, in recent years it has become one of the star dishes in many beach bars and restaurants on the Costa del Sol. The proximity of the sea combines perfectly with the flavour of this dish, which is basically made with rice, vegetables, shellfish and seafood. Ingredients such as prawns, mussels, clams and squid should always feature in a good paella, but there are many other keys to making this dish

LAGA is situated around the famous Bay which bears its name, but visitors who come to the city cannot always see the bay properly. For this reason, it is recommended that you go somewhere relatively distant and high up, such as the area known as the Pinares de San Antn, which is situated on the eastern side of the city. From here, on a clear day, you can see the whole of Mlaga as well as neighbouring towns such as Torremolinos and Alhaurn de la Torre.
HOW TO TAKE IT
Taking a photo such as the one on this page is not difficult if you go to the Pinares de San Antn. This is accessed through the residential development of the same name, which is best reached from the motorway, the Autova del Mediterrneo. You can travel much of the way by car, as a large part of the road is surfaced, and then walk in less than an hour to the peak which is furthest west (there are two). There is a relatively easy walking route which takes you here not only from the Pinares de San Antn development, but also from El Palo district.
OTHER POSSIBILITIES
the peak, you can take the photos from a viewing point which is situated much further down. The same walking route passes this viewing point. From there, you will be able to take a photo which is equally as impressive. It is also recommended that you go to the Pinares de San Anton at sunset, if you can. As well as being an excellent
viewing point over the Bay of Mlaga, this area also has views of the mountainous landscapes of Los Montes de Mlaga and part of the eastern coast.
OTHER INFORMATION OF INTEREST
to Los Montes de Mlaga Natural Park. In fact, these pinewoods can almost be considered an extension of Los Montes. They are crowned by two similar peaks which are about 500 metres above sea level. Their similarity and their shape have led to them being known in some districts to the east of the city as the titties of Mlaga. This is the highest point of the mountains which border the city. The geological characteristics and the flora make this one of the most interesting parts of the local countryside and this is no doubt why a residential development was built on the southern slopes. Their silhouette can be seen from almost everywhere in the city and from their peaks there is a beautiful panorama over the bay and the nearby hills, with a beauty which is accentuated at sunset.

Javier Almellones
HE province of Mlaga still contains many vestiges of Roman civilisation and it is possible to visit La Hedionda baths in the municipality of Casares, which were built during that period. The sulphurous waters are still used by the public today, although the building is in a somewhat dilapidated state due to vandalism. The baths are situated on the right hand bank of the Albarr stream, at the foot of the Sierra de la Utrera, and very close to the boundary with the municipality of Manilva. Many legends exist about the origins of this place. One of the most popular says that the baths were built by order of Julius Caesar. History shows
that the Roman leader was in the area in the year 61 B.C., following in the footsteps of Pompelyo. Local tradition has it that Caesars troops were camped in that area, preparing to confront those of his rival, just before the battle of Munda. It seems that many of the soldiers were suffering from scurvy. The sulphurous waters of the Hedionda proved a natural remedy, and they were cured. Another version of events says that it was Caesar himself who was cured of a herpetic infection.
Another, much more fantastic legend says that a demon which was expelled by Santiago breathed his last breath here and that is what causes these waters to smell of sulphur. This version has been picked up and retold by many writers, all of them travellers, but some of them have added certain modifications to the tale. What is known is that since the municipality of Casares first began to be recognised, way back in history, mention has been made of the curative properties of La Hedondia spring and its location.
Whatever the real story is, we know that this natural spa has been important throughout history, since the Romans first captured and used the water. Later remodelling took place, because of the variation in the volume of water. The Moors made changes to the structure and enlarged the walls and channels, as was discovered when the last archaeological exploration took place in the early 1990s. The bath complex was completed between the 18th and the end of the 20th century, and some of these works still remain.
