Learning Objectives: Students are able to use chemistry principles to design a formulation for controlled release of drugs or bioactive compounds for medical purposes. Competencies and sub-competencies to be achieved Competency: Students are able to apply chemical reaction engineeringconcepts Sub-competency:able to apply basic chemistry principles to utilize biodegradable polymers for controlled release of drugs and bioactive compounds Competence: Students are capable of critical, creative, and innovative thinking, and also have the intellectual ability to solve problems independently and and interdependently Sub-competencies:able to give critical assessment of scientific papers on drugs controlled release; able to give presentation and conduct discussion in English Class regulations Minimum percentage of attendance is 80% as a prerequisite for taking exams. A note from a physician is required for absences due to illness. Students who are late more than 30 minutes will not be allowed to attend class. Topic 1: Physiological Considerations in OralFormulation Development Sub-topic: gastrointestinal tract characteristics relevant to controlled drug release (CDR): functions, pH, transit time, mucous membrane Transport phenomena in intestine and colon interaction of enzymeswith polymers used in CDR enzymes relevant to CDR Topic 2 Biodegradable polymers for CDR: degradation mechanism, structure-properties relationship Sub-topic: chitosan and its derivatives PLGA and pectin hydrophilic biodegradable polymers: carboxymethylcellulose and sodium alginate hydrophobic biodegradable polymers: ethylcellulose, polyvinylacetate Topic 3: Micro and nanoparticles preparation Sub-topic: chitosan particle preparation: interactions with anions (TPP) and glutaraldehyde

emulsification and solvent evaporation spray-drying cryogenic method

Topic 4: Mechanism of drug release Sub-topic: drug classification based on solubility and permeability swelling and diffusion-controlled drug release erosion-controlled drug release drug-polymer interaction mechanism and parameters affecting drug release: molecular weight, polymer-drug interaction Topic 5: Experimental methods Sub-topic: loading and encapsulation efficiency in vitro release bioactivity test and enzym-polymer interaction microorganism-polymer interaction Topic 6: Applications Sub-topic: drugs nutraceuticals and bioactive compounds nanotechnology for cancer chemotherapy targeted delivery using nanoparticles Teaching Notes Students are expected to study topic in this course, and teach it to their peers in the group. Students are expected to make teaching notes using textbooks as the primary source of information, and use the information gathered from the papers in Internet as a complement. Grading System The final grade will be determined based on the grading scheme given in Table 1. Since selfassessment is an important skill, students are also asked to grade themselves and other students. Students with an average mid-semester and final exam scores of less than 55 will fail this course, regardless of the other grading components scores. Grading in this course is based onindividual work (midterms, final exams, quizzes and teaching materials) and team work (reports and class presentations) with weighting factor of60and 40%, respectively.
