New beekeeping book is rst endorsed by the BBKA


The BBKA Guide to Beekeeping by Dr Ivor Davis, NDB and Roger CullumKenyon published today by Bloomsbury 16 August 2012: A new book on beekeeping has been published today and is the rst of its kind to be endorsed by the BBKA, the UKs leading organisation supporting honey bees and beekeepers. Entitled The BBKA Guide to Beekeeping the book is primarily aimed at beginners and novices but should be on the bookshelves of every beekeeper or anyone who has an interest in the fascinating topic of honey bees. The book is bang up-to-date and comprehensive whilst avoiding confusing information overload. It is beautifully designed featuring more than 200 colour photos and illustrations and its 192 pages take the reader through all aspects of beekeeping in ten chapters including how to get started. It also includes a really useful glossary of beekeeping terms. The authors, Ivor Davis and Roger Cullum-Kenyon, both experienced beekeepers, devised the rst versions of the BBKA Course-in-a-Case - a tutors resource, producing the white (Beginners) and yellow (Novices) courses, so this book makes for an excellent companion work for those following either course. It will also take the reader on to competence for the BBKA Basic assessment. He took up beekeeping 25 years ago and currently has 20 colonies in four apiaries located near his home in Congresbury, North Somerset. He became fascinated in bees and beekeeping after a long interest in nature conservation and photographing butteries and wild orchids. He soon became Chairman followed by President of his local beekeeping Branch and then moved to become President of Avon Beekeepers Association. More.......

Ivor Davis continued..... He became a trustee of the British Beekeepers Association in 2000 and later became its Chairman and subsequently, President. This was during a turbulent time with low membership and large losses of bees across the world. With colleagues he was involved in the campaign to get increased government spending on honey bee research and was co-secretary of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for honey bees. He has had a long interest in helping others to learn about bees and beekeeping and after he had taken all the beekeeping assessment and examinations offered by the BBKA and become a Master Beekeeper he continued to take and attain the National Diploma in Beekeeping (NDB). He prepared the original BBKA tutor manuals to help associations run introductory and Basic courses in beekeeping and then Project Managed the BBKAs Course in a Case concept to deliver a comprehensive range of teaching material for all prociency levels in beekeeping. As part of this project he co-authored (with Roger Cullum- Kenyon) the Introduction and Novice training materials and has now produced the rst BBKA book 'Guide to Beekeeping' with Roger. He is a member of the BBKA Examinations Board and examines beekeepers at all levels (both theory and practical). Roger Cullum-Kenyon A life-long interest in natural history and more recently habitat conservation has offered endless opportunities for studying and photographing our native ora and fauna. A past vice chairman of the Grayling Society, secretary of the GRT and a member of many other charities, Roger is a qualied graphic designer, who was senior partner in CKDA the family design consultancy for 30 years. He has worked as a volunteer in the conservation arena for most of his adult life. A keeper of bees on and off since childhood, when he collected live honey bees to give to his grandfather, who was an early beekeeping inuence for the family. Roger volunteered for a post with the BBKA in 2005. A past chairman of the charities Products and Promotions Committee, he is currently MD of BBKA Enterprises Ltd. Roger designed and with Ivor Davis produced four of the BBKAs national training resources - known as the Course-in-a-Case. The Healthy Hive Guide which he designed and produced was awarded a gold medal at the 2009 Apimondia World Congress. More recently he has scripted and is directing a series of training lms.
