Then the two IVGNRs become 1 = Z1 b1 + residuals, and IVGNR 0 : y X1 1 = Z1 b1 + Z2 b2 + residuals. IVGNR1 : y X1 The SSR from (S8.16) is 1 ) MZ (y X1 1 ). (y X1 1 (S8.18) (S8.16) (S8.17)
By the FWL Theorem, the SSR from (S8.17) is the same as the SSR from the regression 1 ) = MZ Z2 b2 + residuals, MZ1(y X1 (S8.19) 1 which is 1 ) MZ (y X1 1 ) (y X1 1 1 ) MZ Z2 (Z2 MZ Z2 )1 Z2 MZ (y X1 1 ). (y X1 1 1 1 Therefore, k2 times the numerator of the articial F statistic is 1 ) MZ Z2 (Z2 MZ Z2 )1 Z2 MZ (y X1 1 ). (y X1 1 1 1 This can be simplied a little, because Z2 MZ1X1 = Z2 X1 Z2 Z1 (Z1 Z1 )1 Z1 X1 = X2 PW X1 X2 PW X1 (X1 PW X1 )1X1 PW X1 = X2 PW X1 X2 PW X1 = O. Therefore, k2 times the numerator of the articial F statistic can also be written as y MZ1Z2 (Z2 MZ1Z2 )1 Z2 MZ1 y . (S8.20) Now, consider the Wald statistic (8.48). It is a quadratic form in the vector 2 and the inverse of the covariance matrix of that vector. By applying the FWL Theorem to the second-stage 2SLS regression y = PW X1 1 + PW X2 2 + residuals = Z1 1 + Z2 2 + residuals, we nd that 2 = (Z2 MZ Z2 )1 Z2 MZ y . 1 1 (S8.21)
where 2 is the IV estimate of 2. Using (S8.21) and (S8.22), we can form the Wald statistic y MZ1Z2 (Z2 MZ1Z2 )1 2 (Z2 MZ1Z2 )1 =

The second factor here is identical to (S8.20). Therefore, the only dierence between the Wald statistic and k2 times the F statistic is that they have dierent denominators. It is the dierence between the denominators that causes the two statistics not to be numerically identical. The denominators would not be identical even if 2 used n k instead of n, because the SSR from the the IVGNR (8.54) is not the same as the SSR from IV estimation of the unrestricted model. If dierent instrument matrices were used in the two IVGNRs, we would not have been able to obtain the result that the numerator of the F statistic is equal to (S8.20). Suppose we continued to use W for the restricted GNR but used W2 for the unrestricted one. Then regression (S8.19) would be replaced by the regression 1 ) = MP X PW X2 b2 + residuals. MPW2 X1(y X1 1 2 W2 (S8.24)
This regression does not yield the same SSR as regression (S8.19) unless the matrices PW2 X and PW X are equal. The two SSRs are not even asymptotically equivalent if these two matrices are not asymptotically equivalent.
