Residents turn out for Moorestown Day
By NICK COHEN
The Moorestown Sun
You would think after 37 years
that Moorestown Day wouldnt
change all that much.
But a record number of ven-
dors, beautiful weather, more
food choices and even a camel
went a long way in making this
years edition the biggest yet.
We finished with 218 vendors
which is definitely the most
weve ever had, Moorestown
Day organizer Jeanette Habina
said.
The event stretched all the
way down to Chester Avenue for
the first time just to accommo-
date all the people that wanted to
be there.
The annual celebration is a
long-standing Moorestown tradi-
tion that features local mer-
chants with sidewalk sales, food
from neighborhood establish-
ments and entertainment from
local theater company perform-
ances.
Concern that more than 90-de-
gree temperatures would keep
crowds away was quickly dis-
missed as people filled Main
Street as early as 9 a.m.
The crowd continued to grow
after the Scott Coffee
Moorestown Rotary 8k finished.
We benefitted from having a
lot of creative vendors this year. NICK COHEN/The Moorestown Sun
More than 200 vendors were set up at this years Moorestown Day on June 1. There was plenty of entertainment for patrons to enjoy
including camel rides, pie-eating contests and live music.
please see EVENT, page 12
From Friday, June 14, to Satur-
day, June 15, a MoorArts produc-
tion Eurydice, will be per-
formed at William Allen Middle
School, 801 N. Stanwick Rd.
The classic Greek myth of Or-
pheus is given a modern voice in
the witty dialogue of Sarah
Ruhls acclaimed play with con-
temporary characters and ingen-
ious plot twists.
The play is a fresh look at a
timeless love story.
This collaborative, experimen-
tal theater project was organized
and managed by Moorestown
High School graduate and Rut-
gers Mason Gross Acting major
Jane Miller Schumacher.
The production also features
MHS students, alums, and com-
munity members.
Schumacher approached
MoorArts last year with the idea
of mounting a summer theater
production.
The project fit well with
MoorArts goals of broadening
the arts in the community and as-
sisting in the professional devel-
opment of young artists and tech-
nicians, and the organization
agreed to fund and facilitate the
production.
Schumacher is directing the
play, designed the promotional
materials, and will play the title
role of Eurydice.
Last seen in Moorestown as
Annie Sullivan in MHSs The
Miracle Worker, she has since
appeared on stage at Mason
Gross School of the Arts.
"I developed the idea for this
student-created show while in
production of a project called
Performance Ensemble at Mason
Gross, Schumacher said.
I wanted to bring back what I
had learned in my first year of
conservatory to my peers and
students who don't otherwise get
the chance to be designers and
creative artists in the way that a
collaborative creative process al-
lows.
It is my hope that they have
gotten the chance to do some-
thing they've never done before,
as I have with this project."
Moorestown senior Rhys
Scheibe, who recently starred in
the MHS production of Legally
Blonde, will portray Orpheus.
Scheibe will enter the Musical
Theatre program at Emerson
College in the fall.
Community theater veteran
Todd Serenbetz will appear as
Eurydices father.
MHS alums and MoorArts per-
formers and technical assistants
fill additional roles on and be-
hind stage.
These include Dana Germano
(MoorArts Liaison), Everett
Mason (Mysterious
Stranger/Lord of the Under-
world), Erika Kindsfather (Cos-
tume designer), Emma Levin
(Loud Stone), Griffin Ames (Big
Stone), Corinne Callahan (Little
Stone), and Andrew Robinson
(set designer/ assistant stage
manager).
Eurydice had its world pre-
miere at Madison Repertory The-
atre in 2003 and its New York pre-
miere off-Broadway at Second
Stage Theatre June 18 to Aug. 26,
2007.
This is MoorArts first non-
musical theater production.
The June 14 performance be-
gins at 8 p.m. and the June 15 per-
formances are at 2 and 8 p.m.
A $5 donation is suggested for
students and a $10 donation for
adults.

Commencement ceremony
is held at Friends School
Moorestown Friends School
held a commencement ceremony
for 71 members of the 2013 gradu-
ating class on Saturday, June 8, at
7 p.m.
Commencement speakers were
faculty member and Philadelphia
resident Scott Hammer (Class of
1999), who is a teacher in the Eng-
lish department, and students
Nate Riggins and Emiko Borne,
both of Moorestown. Members of
the senior class select commence-
ment speakers. MFS does not
compute class rankings or desig-
nate valedictorians/salutatori-
ans. This years seniors will at-
tend colleges and universities in-
cluding Brown University, Bryn
Mawr College, Bucknell Universi-
ty, University of Chicago, Colby
College, Columbia University,
Cornell University, Hamilton Col-
lege, Johns Hopkins University,
Lafayette College, Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, New
York Universitys Tisch School,
Northwestern University, Rutgers
University, Smith College, Univer-
sity of Pennsylvania and many
more in the U.S. and abroad.
The Moorestown Friends
Commencement ceremony in-
cluded a number of traditions.
Graduates have worn white
dresses and formal mens attire in
lieu of caps and gowns since at
least the early 1900s. Quaker sec-
ondary schools traditionally do
not use robes, which are an out-
growth of clerical garb. Another
tradition is that the head of
school reads the diploma of one
of the originals students who
have attended MFS since kinder-
garten. Thirteen members of the
Class of 2013 are originals.
The ceremony was scheduled
outside, with seniors exiting from
the front of the Upper School and
walking around the driveway to
the seating area.

BOE approves three-year contract
with janitorial service company
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
Moorestown Board of Educa-
tion members approved a three-
year contract with ABM, a janito-
rial service company, outsourcing
the night custodial staff at
William Allen Middle School.
According to business adminis-
trator Lynn Shugars, the contract
would save the district approxi-
mately $120,00 per year, or $360,000
total. ABM would replace four
night custodians at the school.
The companys contract ends
on June 30 and the district re-
ceived multiple bids. ABM and
Blue Stripes Property were the
lowest bidders.
Teachers protested the boards
consideration of bringing ABM to
replace night custodians at
WAMS when the topic appeared
on the May 22 board of education
meeting agenda.
Many teachers said there is not
only a safety issue surrounding
outsourced custodians, but the
work the company would be paid
for might not be up to par with
that of the current staff.
Put safety and quality first,
teacher Heather Trapani said.
According to Trapani, formal
complaints surrounding missing
items, uncleanliness and other is-
sues were filed about the ABM
custodial service.
According to board president
Don Mishler, the school district
outsources other services such as
bus drivers, lunch staff and
grounds personnel.
The district is attempting to
save money in areas that would
not greatly affect the students.
AMB currently provides
evening custodial services in all
the elementary schools and a por-
tion of the high school, Shugars
said. As for the list of complaints
presented on May 22, Mishler said
it isnt the first time these issues
were presented, but they were not
left untouched.
We have been able to manage
this list. Its not without its issue,
but we believe it has been success-
ful in what we were looking to
achieve and thats cost savings,
Mishler said after the May 22
meeting, adding issues would
arise in any situation and its the
districts job to handle those is-
sues accordingly. Mishler was un-
able to be reached for further com-
ment.
The next board of education
meeting will be held on Tuesday,
June 25, in the WAMS library at
7:30 p.m.

Photography contest submissions due by June 23
At this time of the year Moorestown is
blessed with an abundance of natural
beauty exhibited by its plants and wildlife.
STEM (Save the Environment of
Moorestown) celebrates this abundance
with its annual nature photography con-
test.
Photography is a great way of capturing
the beauty of nature in Moorestown and
sharing it with our family and friends.
Here is your chance to show off your com-
munity and your photographic skills.
The photos must be taken in
Moorestown after June 2012 of nature sub-
jects such as plants, insects, birds and ani-
mals. Submit 5 by 7 inch prints (color or
black and white).
Entries must have the following info
written on the back of the photo to qualify:
Title of picture; name and address of the
photographer plus email address; desig-
nate adult or childrens division (16 and
under); location of photo; month and year
of photo; and an arrow pointing to the top
of the picture.
Some tips:
Take early morning shots when light-
ing is softer
Keep your back to the sun but also con-
sider flowers and shrubs illuminated from
behind.
Look for special effects from fog or
after a rain.
Get down on the level of your subject
for better perspective.
Remember the best camera is the one
you have with you. This may be your cell
phone!
Digital editing and adjustments are ac-
cepted, but not photo montages. Mail en-
tries to STEM, P.O. Box 704, Moorestown,
NJ 08057 by June 23, or bring to STEMs
Annual Picnic on June 30, 1:30 to 4:30 at
the Moorestown Community House. If you
wish to stay for the picnic, bring food to
share. Call Betsy Schnorr at 235-6348 for
picnic information.
A maximum of four entries per person
will be accepted. You do not need to be
present to win.
All prints submitted will become the
property of STEM for non-commercial use
in educational and promotional materials.

T
he late U.S. Sen. Frank Lauten-
berg wasnt even in his grave
yet, when the political maneu-
vering began.
The death of the 89-year-old New
Jersey Democrat on June 3 presented
Gov. Christie with several options, but
he has chosen one that will cost tax-
payers wallets dearly. Instead of al-
lowing voters to choose Lautenbergs
successor in the Nov. 5 general elec-
tion, hes ordering a special election
less than three weeks before on
Wednesday, Oct. 16.
The cost of an Aug. 13 primary and
an Oct. 16 special election is $24 mil-
lion. Since the governor has already
chosen New Jersey Attorney General
Jeff Chiesa as the interim replace-
ment, we wonder whats the harm in
saving taxpayers a bundle by allowing
Chiesa to hang on to the job three
weeks longer so that the cost of a spe-
cial election can be avoided. Democra-
cy is priceless, but is something else
going on here?
State Sen. Barbara Buono, whose
gubernatorial campaign against
Christie might have benefited from the
coattails of a strong Democratic U.S.
Senate candidate on the same Nov. 5
ballot, wasted no time taking the offen-
sive.
Earlier this year, the governor
cited money as to why he vetoed early
voting, Buono said in a press state-
ment, referring to Christies May 9
veto of legislation that would have let
people cast ballots during a 15-day pe-
riod before Election Day. However, de-
spite costing millions of dollars, Gov.
Christie made the cynical and arro-
gant decision to call a special election
in October.
Buono may not be without her own
political motives in this controversy,
but she makes a valid point.
As the governor, Christie has the
right to take advantage of the power of
his position, and he did just that. We
just wish it wasnt costing so much.
Christies costly move
Special election for Lautenbergs replacement will cost $24M

Christies decision to hold a special

Lautenberg? Let your voice be heard

Event brought more food
options and kids attractions
They brought interesting things
to sell and were really excited to
be a part of the event, Habina
said. One vendor brought a dunk
tank! We didnt provide that, they
did.
More food options were a prior-
ity for Habina so she was excited
Fat Donkey BBQ and Marys Mo-
bile Diner set up shop for the
event.
Pulled pork sandwiches and
hot dogs proved to be popular
items throughout the day.
Another big attraction was the
kids zone that gave children the
opportunity to ride a camel, pet
other animals or jump to their
hearts content in one of a few dif-
ferent bounce houses.
It was really awesome to see
how much the kids enjoyed that,
Habina said.
Cooperation with Lincoln
Technical Institute to provide
parking as well as shuttle service,
and Moorestown Police in estab-
lishing a new traffic pattern,
made it easy for patrons to navi-
gate the busy event.
Great cooperation helped us a
lot this year, Habina said. We
tried some new things this year to
improve the event and received a
lot of help.
Reviews of the event have been
nothing but positive.
Weve never received this
much amazing feedback, Habina
said. Not just emails but phone
calls telling us how great an event
it was.
The idea that Habina would
take a break and enjoy all the pos-
itive feedback is quickly dis-
missed as she met with her team
the following morning to begin
planning next years event.
Not a minutes rest, Habina
said with a laugh.
Successes from this years
event will be remembered for
next year and new ideas are al-
ready in the works.
While we were walking down
Main Street, the ideas for next
year already started flowing,
Habina said.
We hope to add a stage for
local bands, dancers to perform
and since we already have a kids
zone, wed like to add an area
specifically for teens behind An-
tonios Grill or somewhere else
along the strip.
Just more things to look for-
ward to next year.

With the end of softball and
baseball season, Burlington Coun-
ty College reflects on the success-
es of the Barons and a major first
for the BCC softball team.
The ladies secured the first Na-
tional Junior College Athletic As-
sociation Division II Softball Na-
tional Championship berth in
BCCs history and the baseball
team captured the Region XIX Di-
vision II runner-up position with
two impressive wins in the tour-
nament. Both teams had players
named to the All-Region and All-
Conference teams this year and
the ladies had an All-American.
For the Lady Barons, the win at
the NJCAA Region XIX Division
II Women's Softball Tournament
earned them a spot at the Nation-
al Championship in Clinton, Miss.
for the first time in BCCs softball
team history.
The ladies played well in the
championship against the other
16 community colleges, but ulti-
mately did not bring home the
championship.
On May 15, the ladies played
No. 2 seed Phoenix College and
were defeated 9-1.
The team played the elimina-
tion game on May 16 and lost 12-4
against No. 10 seed Sauk Valley
Community College. No. 1seed
Louisiana State University Eu-
nice brought home the champi-
onship title.
Melissa Rustemeyer of Colonia
was one of 13 women in the na-
tion named to the NJCAA Divi-
sion II Softball Second Team All-
American. She is ranked 16th in
the nation for home runs and 40th
in the nation for RBIs.
Rustemeyer, along with Krys-
tine Rice of Marlton, were named
to First Team All-Region and First
Team All-Garden State Athletic
Conference for Division II soft-
ball. Gina Gryniuk of Marlton
and Krystal Pearson of Say-
ersville were named to Second
Team All-Region and First Team
All-GSAC. Lisa Kosteleski of
Cherry Hill, Taylor Hamliton of
Willingboro, and Carolyn Griffin
of Marlton made Second Team
All-GSAC. Griffin, a pitcher, was
also recognized as the Region XIX
Division II Women's Softball Tour-
nament MVP.
The mens baseball team en-
tered the region tournament as
the No. 3 seed and defeated No. 2
seed Lackawanna College 2-1
and No. 1 seed Mercer County
Community College 2-0 on May 10.
They advanced to the finals on
May 12 and fell 9-10 and 12-13 to
Lackawanna. They ended the sea-
son as Region XIX Division II
baseball runner-ups with a 17-27
overall record.
DeVon Hedgepeth of Mount
Holly and Eddie Stiles of Lumber-
ton were named to First Team All-
GSAC and Second Team All-Re-
gion for Division II Baseball.
Taylor Place, a South Carolina na-
tive, made Second Team All-
GSAC.
Although the baseball season
may be over for the student ath-
letes, Scott Knazek, head coach for
the mens baseball team, has seen
success as a catcher in a Can-Am
League, the Rockland Boulders.
Knazek was named head coach in
August of 2011.
The 2014 season for BCCs
mens baseball and womens soft-
ball will start in late
February/early March.

up in a typical transition hose. Plus, our skilled technicians
can remove the dust, pollens and contaminants from yours
