Course Description: Introduction to the nature of Physical Therapy, its history and the demonstration of general techniques necessary for basic care of patients. Includes techniques for Vital Signs, Positioning and Draping, Inhalation Therapy, Therapeutic massage, tilt table, ambulation and intermittent compression among others. General Course Objective: To provide the students the knowledge on the roles and settings of Physical Therapists, the historical development of the profession and an introduction to the general techniques in patient handling and care. Specific Course Objectives: After each topic/subject matter, the student is expected to: I.History and Practice of Physical Therapy a. Understand and define the history of Physical Therapy. b. Define Physical Therapy, its practice and profession. c. Identify the scope, roles and career paths of a Physical Therapist d. Explain the concept of rehabilitation. e. Discuss the concepts of health status, functional limitation, disability and handicap. f. Enumerate the different members of the rehabilitation team and explain their roles in the health care system and in the community. g. Enumerate and discuss the different world obligations and legal documents governing PT practice and its involvement in primary health care globally. II.Vital Signs a.Discuss the importance of monitoring vital signs as a method of assessing patient response to selected treatment activities. b.Describe and demonstrate the common techniques for monitoring temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure. c.Identify normative values or ranges for each vital sign. d.Describe the normal as well as the abnormal variations in vital signs and the factors that influence III.Approaches to Infection Control a.Discuss infection control principles b.Explain the universal precautions, standard precautions, medical asepsis, surgical asepsis, sterilization, disinfection, antisepsis and isolation techniques c.Demonstrate basic infection control practices including hand washing, donning and doffing protective garments IV.Body Mechanics a.Describe the proper body mechanics during treatment. b.Assume and maintain proper body mechanics during treatment.

c.Identify and distinguish the different abbreviations used in physical therapy note taking. d.Apply the usage of these abbreviations. V.Positioning and Draping a.Identify the equipment necessary for effective bed positioning and draping. b.State the principles behind proper positioning and draping. c.Outline and demonstrate proper positioning and draping techniques with emphasis on the patients physical comfort. d.Identify secondary complications that should be avoided. e.State the importance of a frequent turning program. VI.Bed mobility and Transfers a.Identify significant transfer techniques of bed mobility & transfers that may be used by patients with physical impairments. b.Identify the parts of a wheelchair & demonstrate in assembling/disassembling parts during transfer techniques. c.Describe the physical requirements, equipment and layout necessary for specific transfers. d.Outline the steps required to complete transfers. e.Demonstrate proper assistance/execution of transfers. VII.Ambulation a.Identify various types of ambulation aids. b.Describe the advantages and disadvantages of various types of ambulation aids. c.Describe and perform the two-point, four-point, three-point, three-one-point, and modified two-point, and four-point gait patterns. d.Describe the advantages and disadvantages of the previously cited gait patterns. e.Teach any of the gait patterns cited, using appropriate equipment for a given condition. f.Describe and perform various functional activities. g.Teach functional activities appropriate for a given condition, using proper ambulation aids. VIII.Intermittent Compression a.Explain the principles behind applying intermittent compression. b.Identify the conditions in which intermittent compression can be of benefit. c.Identify the different parts of the Jobst intermittent compression unit. d.Demonstrate how to operate the unit. IX.Tilt Table a. Describe the physiological effects of Tilt table b. Describe the different types and parts of Tilt tables c. Identify the indications, precautions and contraindications of Tilt Table phases d.Demonstrate the different angles used for specific conditions and rehabilitation e.Identify the signs of Orthostatic Hypotension and other adverse effects of tilt table X.Traction a. Identify the effects of Spinal Traction b. Define the different methods of applying traction c.Identify the indications for Spinal Traction d. Identify the limitations, contraindications and precautions in using spinal traction e. Describe the general procedures in using traction

f. Differentiate and perform the different Cervical and Lumbar Traction Techniques XI.Bandaging and taping a.Enumerate the different purposes of applying bandage. b.State the principles relevant to bandaging. special c.Describe and demonstrate the fundamental turns in bandaging as well as some bandaging techniques and distinguish the specific usage of each technique. d.Demonstrate the different taping techniques & distinguish their usage. XII.Therapeutic Massage a.Discuss the principles, techniques and uses of massage & myofascial release as a treatment modality. b.Identify the different types of massage & myofascial release. c.Enumerate and discuss the therapeutic uses and effects of each type. d.Perform correctly the technique used in each type of massage & the basic techniques of myofascial release. e.Select appropriate technique according to the therapeutic needs of the patient. XIII.Basic Life Support a.Enumerate the sequence on how to approach a cardiovascular emergency. b.Incorporate the rhythm of air resuscitation and cardiac compression. c.Identify the indications and contraindications for CPR. Computation for exemption: Postmidterm Class Standing same as Midterm Class standing Postmidterm grade = 2/3 postmidterm class standing + 1/3 prefinal exam Tentative Final Grade = midterm grade + postmidterm grade EXEMPTION: Tentative final grade of 90 (1.5) or higher. Hence the Tentative Final Grade will be considered the FINAL GRADE.

For students with a Tentative Finals Grade lower than 90 (1.5), Final grade will be computed as follows: Postmidterm Class Standing 60% 30% 10% = Long exams (70% long quizzes + 30% prefinal exam) = Lab practical = Short quizzes & assignments

Postmidterm Grade = 2/3 postmidterm class standing + 1/3 final exams Final Grade = 2/3 postmidterm grade + 1/3 midterm grade
