aster bedrooms aren't just for sleeping anymore. Once seen
only as "the parents' large room," it's now becoming a private
oasis or a diverse family room complete with amenities. It can
even be a luxurious escape from the everyday pressure that
life throws at families. The master bedroom can now become
a "resort" of its own, with a little help from a licensed builder.
The only limitations to creating your next great room are — of course —
your wallet, for starters; but with a little creativity by your builder, you can
open up your imagination and square footage to invest in your home and
your family.
Tom Farr of Home Building Solutions of Farmington Hills said he has seen
the swing of home remodeling in the master bedroom.
"People are putting in fireplaces, surround sound systems, upgrading the
bathroom, vaulting the ceilings and even putting in private balconies," he said.

K
nowing your flowers and
developing a plan that can be
executed within your budget and
to your tastes are the keys to
creating a landscaping plan for
your yard.
It may sound basic, but the first step is to understand that flowers and plants
fall into two major categories — annuals and perennials. Annuals must be
replanted every year and perennials grow back themselves each year.
Before purchasing flowers, homeowners should have a basic understanding of
the area in which they will be planting. Different types of plants and flowers do
well in different environments, so attention should be paid to how much sun
each of planting areas receives. It may be helpful to draw out a map of the
intended flower beds and then mark it with notations such as full sun, partial
sun, partial shade, and full shade.
This will help when choosing flowers, as you can refer to your planting map to
see what flowers will do well in different areas.
It's important to note that annuals tend to like full sun and perennials tend to
like partial sun or partial shade. This isn't always true, but it's a basic rule of
thumb that should be understood. Annuals that prefer full shade, while available,
are limited. Perennials that like full shade tend to have minimal flower growth
and provide mostly foliage.
There are some exceptions to this rule, so it's important to read up on each
flower you purchase.
Care should be taken when matching the types of flowers and foliage plants
that are chosen with the space where they'll be growing. Light and soil
requirements should always be considered before deciding which types of
flowers to buy for your yard.
Besides sunlight requirements, another consideration when choosing between
types of flowers and foliage plants is the nature of the soil. For instance,
homeowners in Michigan don't have to worry about salty soil but they do have to
deal with clay or hard soil in some cases. Using topsoil or other types of planting
soil can help plants thrive.
Before selecting a type of soil, it's always good to consult an expert or sales
professional at a store, or do some research on your own.

S
ummer is meant to be spent outdoors — light up the grill, shoot off some fireworks,
maybe spend some time with friends over your favorite beverage and in a comfy
chair. So why don't you kick up summer a notch and spend it on your own deck.
Whether you've got only a couple hundred square feet or an acre to spare, Oakland
County's licensed builders and designers have ideas for the perfect deck.

Decks have come a long way from the basic 10-by-12 wooden structures that dad and
gramps squeezed the family onto and charmed everyone with their tales and grilling secrets.
Today's modern decks still include the basics but have grown to embrace just about everything
— including the kitchen sink.
Licensed builder and home inspector Michael Saari of Oakland Builders Construction
explains that there are several materials to choose from when constructing your deck.
"The deck industry has gone through a lot of changes," Saari said. "We first went through
non-pressure-treated wood which was just simple pine. Then we went to Wolmanized or
pressure-treated wood. But the pressure-treated wood can't be stained or painted in the first
year that you put it up. It has to dry for a minimum of one year, otherwise the paint or stain
will just flake off of it."
Other materials mentioned by Saari that the industry has used include several different
varieties of plastic decking materials.
"But they were known for cracking," he said. "They would swell and shrink and leave large
gaps. It was a very bad material and it almost gave the plastic decking material industry a bad
name."
The material that has brought decks from the depths of initial plastic ineptness, according
to Saari, is Trex material.
"It's a fantastic composite material," he said. "It comes in several different color shades and
it can't warp, shrink or expand. It never needs painting or staining. And it has the appearance
of natural wood."
Trex material is about double the price of an all-wood deck, but the advantages include
virtually no need for power washing or staining.
"It always looks beautiful," Saari said.
Decks can be built using a combination of wood and Trex materials. The foundation of each
deck has to be made of real wood.
"The deck framing is still pressure-treated lumber," Saari said. "But anyone I've worked with
who has used the Trex materials for the actual deck area has loved it."
Carl Curtis of Curtis Builders in Milford said he enjoys creating decks using composite
materials so clients can be "free" to enjoy their decks.
"The good thing about composite decks is that they don't split and crack and splinter like
real wood does," he said. "They are very barefoot-friendly."
Nickolay (Nick) Vrotchinski of NYX Home Improvement and Remodeling relies on natural
wood for decking, but also works with a combination of composite materials and real wood to
create decks for his clients.
"I believe in natural (materials), but I use the composite materials or a combination of both
