Psychodynamic Perspectives on Abuse: T he cost of fear. Una McClusky, Carol-Ann Hopper. Abuse is def ined broadly and considered as a widespread phenomenon with a variety of manif estations and contexts. Its consequences, and the responses it may provoke, are discussed in detail with ref erence to three areas. In the personal context, the impact of abuse on an individuals development, emotional lif e and ability to participate in society is addressed. In the workplace, where the f ocus is upon working relationships and organizational goals, abuse may cause stress, undermine ef f ectiveness and lead to legal redress: thus it involves a dif f erent set of problems and requires dif f erent treatment. In relation to society as a whole, the threat which abuse poses and the f actors which determine policy are evaluated. (Publisher comment).

From Pain to Violence: T he traumatic roots of destructiveness. Felicity du Z uluetta Violence is all around us; yet, despite its widespread prevalence, we remain unclear about its causes. In this book Felicity de Z uluetta begins by def ining violence as distinct f rom aggression, and then attempts to trace its origins, highlighting the polarization between those who believe mankind to be innately violent and those who see violence as the outcome of mans lif e experiences. As a result of her investigations, the author suggests that the current high level of violence may well be linked to the ef f ects of childhood and adult trauma which appear to be f ar more widespread than has hitherto been acknowledged. T hese f indings are relevant to understanding why normal people can become violent in certain conditions. T his is a second edition and has been f ully updated. A new chapter on terrorism has been added. (Publisher comment)

Male Rape: Ritchie McMullen McMullen became aware of how hidden and unreported this crime

McMullen became aware of how hidden and unreported this crime was and how deeply scarred it lef t its victims. He realised that the taboo had to be brought out into the open and youth workers and counsellors needed to know how to respond to victims and help them move on f rom the self -loathing that of ten f ollowed an attack. T his book widely acknowledged as the f irst on its subject was the result. His research conf irmed the notion that rape is not about sex but about power. And f ar f rom being a straight nightmare about predatory homosexuals, it was most of ten a crime carried out by heterosexuals on gay men linked to bullying and to a violent masculinity that wanted to assert itself over what was seen as weak or ef f eminate. (T his book is out of print but it is possible to f ind it second hand).
