TABLE. 3 PLAN OF ON FARM TESTING FOR 2009-10

3.1. Artemia cyst production in salt pans:

1 Title of OFT : Artemia cyst production in salt pans

2 Agro ecological zone : Semi arid East coastal region
3 Production system : Extensive
4 Problem identified : The salt pans are the major operational area in the coastel region of
Thoothukudi and in these salt pan the farmers are encaged in producing salt
only for most part of the year and in adverse climate or during abundant
production they face huge loss. The salt pan can be used for the cultivation
of artemia , which is a live fish food having greater demand in the market.
By cultivating artemia in salt pans the the quality of the salt can also be
improved because of the removal of the algal growth by the artemia. The
CMFRI has released a technology for brackish water artemia cultivation
under laboratory conditions, the same technology can be assessed under the
field conditions.
5 Number of farmers and area : 50farmers and 120 acres
affected in the operational
villages
6 Thrust areas :
7 Rationale for proposing the : 1. Different species of Artemias are naturally available in salt pans
OFT 2. Lack of suitable trial on artemia mass culture in saltpan
3. Artemia is rich in protein and can be used as fish food and also for the
animal feed production
4. It is the low cost technology for the animal protein production.
5. Artemia cultivation in saltpans provide additional income from the salt
pans

3.2. Inclusion of Prosopis juliflora pod flour as an alternative concentrate feed for dairy cows to bring down
the cost of concentrate feeding :

1 Title of OFT : Inclusion of Prosopis juliflora pod flour as an alternative concentrate

feed for dairy cows to bring down the cost of concentrate feeding
2 Agro ecological zone : Semi arid East coastal region
3 Production system : Extensive
4 Problem identified : 1. High cost of concentrate feeding reduced the profit margin from
milch animal rearing
2. The abundantly found resources of prosopis juliflora tree (a
wasteland weed) pods are not properly utilized as animal feed
3. To reduce the feeding cost the livestock farmers are either try
feeding their animals with Poor nutritive value feeds or under fed
the cows : this practice led to the development of metabolic
disorders and production loss and culling of animals.
5 Number of farmers and area : 300 livestock farmers and 750 cattle
affected in the operational
villages
6 Thrust areas : Feeding management of livestocks
7 Rationale for proposing the : Prosopis juliflora is a major wasteland weed in Thoothukudi district
OFT and its pods have good nutritive value for cattle feeding but this resource is
not properly tried so for . Inclusion of low cost prosopis juliflora pod flour
in the concentrate ration for milch animals will help to bring down the cost
of feeding which is major challenge faced by the farmers involved in milch
animal rearing.
8 Technology option 1 (Famers : For a cow weighing 350 kg of body weight and giving 10lit of milk daily :
practice and extent of yield Green fodder : 5-6 hours of grazing
loss) Dry fodder: 5 kg of fodder sorghum ( Rs. 15)
Concentrate feed:
Commercially available cattle feed -mixer cake: 2kg (Rs.24)
Wheat bran : 2 kg (Rs.18)
Gram husk : 1 kg (Rs.8)
Extent of yield loss: the animal rapidly losses its body condition and suffers
with production loss and metabolic disorders, and delayed fertility ,etc..
9 Technology option 2 : For a cow weighing 350 kg body weight giving 10 lit of milk ,
Action Plan 2009-10, SCAD KVK, Thoothukudi

(Recommended practice and Green fodder: 5-6 hours of good grazing

extent of its adoption) Dry fodder: 5 -10 kg adlibidum feeding
Concentrate feed:
6kg of commercial good quality cattle feed (Rs.90)

Extent of adoption : 10%

1 Technology option 3 : For a cow weighing 350 kg body weight giving 10lit of milk,
0 ( Alternative practice: Green fodder: 5-6 hours of grazing
assessment or refinement Dry fodder: 5-10 kg of adlibidum feeding
with justification and source) Concentrate feed:
2kg of Prosopis juliflora pod flour: Rs. 15
4kg of commercial good quality cattle feed: Rs.60
Justification:
this practice will bring down the cost of concentrate feeding by Rs.15 per
day (10%), the landless laborers and who are involved in the collection of
prosopis pods, can able to earn additional income to the family ( within a
couple of hours one person can easily collect 50-75 kg of prosopis pods )

3.3. Introduction of COTH –2 Tomato:

1 Title of OFT : Introduction of COTH –2 Tomato

2 Agro ecological zone : Southern semi Arid Zone

3 Production system : Irrigated

4 Problem identified : 1. Leaf curl viral infection which causes severe income loss to the farmers
2. Lower tonnes yield due to unnamed local varieties purchased from the
local seed ventors

Action Plan 2009-10, SCAD KVK, Thoothukudi

20

3. Income loss due to poor agronomic practices like

a. No or poor staging to the yielding plants which causes decay of fruits
due to water soaked condition in the soil
b. Poor plant population maintenance due to mortality during
transplanting
4. PKM 1, the other ruling variety is very susceptible to leaf curl virus
and give only 25-30 tones per hectare, which is very much lower than
the COTH 2.

5 Number of farmers and area : 28 farmers and 32.5 ha area

affected in the operational
villages
6 Thrust areas : 1. Introduction of a new hybrid variety to increase the productivity / ha
2. Introduction of improved farming practices
7 Rationale for proposing the : Since the farmers are practicing poor agronomical practices, the
OFT productivity per hectare is very low. PKM 1 is the other ruling variety is very
susceptible to leaf curl viral disease which causes severe yield cum income
loss to the farmers. The introduction of new hybrid variety COTH 2 is a
resistant variety and capable of giving 90 tons/ha. Thats why this particular
problem has been selected for on farm trail.

8 Technology option 1 : 1.Usage of local unnamed varieties: Adoption level -50%

3.6Assessing the utility of enriched biocharcoal soil sinking for improving the soil quality and yield in
blackgram

1 Title of OFT : Assessing the utility of enriched biocharcoal soil sinking for
improving the soil quality and yield in blackgram
2 Agro ecological zone : Southern semi arid zone
3 Production system : Rainfed
4 Problem identified : Low organic carbon content in soil
Reduced yield in black gram due to non application of agricultural
waste as manure and Degradation of soil quality
Lack of awareness on preparation of compost with agricultural
wastes
Increased atmospheric carbon level due to burning of agricultural
waste

5 Number of farmers and area affected : 150 farmers 2000acres

in the operational villages
6 Thrust areas : Soil fertility management
7 Rationale for proposing the OFT : The enriched biocharcoal prepared from pyrolysis of crop residues
applied to the soil as soil conditioner results in improvemnent of
soil fertility and thereby increase the yield in blackgram cultivated
in that soil.
